How to drive up snowy/icy hills?
Hope I can get some help here, 1st time Subaru owner in Alaska

Have an older (1988) Subaru 4speed Automatic Full-Time 4wd. and am perplexed on how the Full time 4WD works -

my Haynes manual says nothing on the subject . Am on an Island in the Aleutians so have no access to "dealer" or Subaru shop

First am wondering if I have a Viscous Coupling or Multi - plate clutch that transfers power to the back "wheel".

THE PROBLEM - - - - -My wagon will go up a snowy/ icy road only if a considerable speed is maintained , 20+ MPH. The problem is I'll be driving home - straight flat road. then have to turn left up a hill, so have to speed up before the turn, then turn at 20MPH and boogie. Is this normal??

If I slow down and turn then step on the gas - the rear wheel doesn't engage and the front right wheel spins in the ice and snow - and I'm Stuck ! - in a 4WD

everyone here owns a '70's '80's Subaru, for the most part, and I'm sure they could answer your question easily

Do you have snow tires? I TRIED getting my car stuck driving through bumper high snow, then slush then through a few ditches and couldn't do it. Without the snow tires though, I can't go more than 30 without sliding.
