View Full Version : '05 STi Cluster swap into '05 WRX - need actual install instructions

I am trying to install an '05 STi gauge cluster into my 2005 WRX.

I took out my factory cluster, and tried to install the STi cluster.

First thing I noticed when looking at the plugs/connectors...the connectors on the STi cluster for the Speedometer and tachometer are mounted backwards compared to my WRX cluster. They still plug in fine, just backwards. The connector for the fuel/temp. is different, and won't plug in at all. I have heard you need to shave some latches off the plug to make it fit. I have not tried to make it fit, yet.

After plugging in the speedo/tach and turning the ignition on, the cluster turns on and does the sweep. Then it has that continuous beep/buzz noise.

ok.. i installed an 05 sti cluster into my 05 wrx... used the sti left side wires for the gas/temp. that works fine.
i cut c28 and c30 so i didnt short out the radio..
the only problems i have now are the loud beeping noise, the ebrake, and the check engine light.

what wire do i need to cut to turn the beeping off? also for the ebrake?

ok i found out that C9 stops the buzzing.. but what about the ebrake light?

Do I have to cut any of these wires above? And a Scoobymods how-to says to cut pin B28 if you are not concerned with the outside air temp.

Can anyone please tell me which wires I need to cut in order to get the cluster working properly? And can someone confirm that the speedo/tach connectors being backwards are not a problem.

I want to get it working before I send it out to get the odometer calibrated.

Thanks,
Brian

Before you do any cutting, find the techdocs for the 05 cluster so you know whats different between the STi and WRX pinouts.

You shouldn't have to cut any wires to prevent the radio fuse from blowing on your 05 WRX.

The speedo and tach plugs are ok mounted backwards. My 04 cluster in an 05 works fine.

on the 2005 and 2006 the STI cluster connector for the Fuel/temp changed. I went to a junkyard and got myself a 05 STI green connector for the gas/temp. I just cut all those cables and using the colors + the wiring diagrams I connected and taped each one of 'em. I do have a 06 wrx, I did not have any ebrake or check engine light but I did have the buzzing sound. Yes the C9 is for the buzzing sound on both 05 STI cluster and 06 STI cluster. I have both wiring diagrams for 05 WRX & STI and for 06 WRX & STI.

Send me a pm with your email and I will email it to you. I do hear the 05 STI into 05 WRX has issues with check engine light and ebrake. But I'm sure that by looking at the wiring diagrams you can figure something out. Last resort resell it and get yourself a 06 STI cluster or as Okita suggests, get yourself a 04 STI cluster which is confirmed to work on 05 wrx.

Before I installed the 06 STI cluster I had a 04 STI cluster and all the plugs are the same, no buzzing sound or check engine light or ebrake light. I did have the ABS light on. At that time I didn't have any wiring diagrams on me so I coudn't figure it out, I resold it.

I will take a look at both diagrams right now and see if I spot any discrepancies between both years.

As quaam says, the ABS light will be on if you use a 04 cluster, however that is the only real issue I had with my install. Apparently they changed the ABS circuitry starting with the 05 models.

It has something to do with the amount of voltage the cluster sees. They flip flopped it from 04 to 05. The following is just an example of whats going on. On the 04 model to turn off the ABS light (ABS system OK) the cluster gets 10v. However, on the 05 models 10v turns on the ABS light (ABS not OK).

The light essentially works backwards if you use the 04 cluster in the 05. When I turn the key to the ON position, the ABS light stays off for 2 sec then comes on versus Staying on for 2 sec then going off. No problem though, just tape it up.

From the research I have done, there is no way to change this as it seems they changed the wiring of the entire ABS system from 04 to 05.

In that case what is the best STI cluster to install in an 05 wrx. Like easiest to install with most lights working if not all. Id like all my lights working but if its not possible.

I just did this with my 02 car and an 05 STI cluster
here's what I got:
buzzing, diff, abs, blown radio fuse.
however:

Here is my car 1 month before I bought it.
I had originally got it with the stock cluster installed and just recently purchased the SAME one that was removed from it. (so we're dealing with same car and cluster as the photo above)

I was told that all I had to do was ground pin B4 to wire C6 with a vampire tap and I'd be all set. Problem is, there's no wire or terminal inside the B4 on the harness. There's a PIN on B4 in the cluster though with no signs of solder.

The main answer lies with the original owner... so I could wait on him, but I'd like to know what you guys think

I don't see a C28 or C30... C only goes to 14... I assume he means B28 and B30?
*grr, this is driving me ****in nuts.

So if I'm understanding right, I can use an 04 STi cluster in my 05wrx dash with no issues other than the ABS light? I got rid of the ABS during my swap so I'd expect that light anyways.
