People tend to refer to the 98-01 RS as the "GC8" RS. Can anyone explain then why digits 4,5,6 of my vin are "GM6"?

View Full Version : GC8 vs. GM6 Iowannaski 11-05-2001, 12:18 PM People tend to refer to the 98-01 RS as the "GC8" RS. Can anyone explain then why digits 4,5,6 of my vin are "GM6"? JGard 11-05-2001, 12:51 PM i heard something about GC8 being the original series over in Japan or something like that... Iowannaski 11-05-2001, 12:57 PM does anybody have an RS that actually says "GC8" under the hood somewhere? Impreza Rider 11-05-2001, 02:39 PM IIRC, the 4-5-6 digits of mine are GC6. I'll have to wait until I go home for thanksgiving to check though. I was looking at it one day and found that weird. Iowannaski 11-05-2001, 03:06 PM Well, if GC8 actually refers to the old skool WRX, maybe 6 is 2dr, 8 is 4dr (not that there ever was a 2 door wrx...) Keiho 11-05-2001, 03:12 PM I believe my car says GC8 on it...not too sure though, I'll check later on today. Impreza Rider 11-05-2001, 05:15 PM The "6" can't be for a 2 door, since I have a sedan ;) jmullan 11-05-2001, 05:31 PM Mine says GM4. Hmm. From Ye Olde Schoole. scooby5 11-05-2001, 05:52 PM 1st letter: G = Subaru G Line 2nd letter: M = 2Door Coupe C = 4Door Sedan F = Sport Wagon 3rd letter: 4 = 2.2L 6 = 2.5L 8 = 2.0L 4th letter: 2 = Brighton 3 = L 7 = RS 8 = Outback 5th letter: 5 = Manual type seatbelt and SRS Airbags So GC8 refers to the 2L Impreza 4 door body model, which is the common name for the oldskool impreza model. The RS would be a GC6 or GM6 depending on the # of doors . Penphoe 11-05-2001, 06:16 PM Gundma (sp?) or whatever the name of the city where the Impreza line-up is built perhaps? Iowannaski 11-05-2001, 06:27 PM arghh, I always thought it wasn't quite right. Anyhow, from this day forward, acording to me, it will be refered to as a "G*6 RS" or maybe just a "G*67" pronounced "gee star sitty seven." edit: I didn't spell anything wrong, I just refuse to type the name of a certain honda sedan:D Keiho 11-05-2001, 07:07 PM I prefer to keep calling my car a GC8 though. Heh. Too bad it isn't a 2.0l. ;) 63Alpine 11-05-2001, 09:52 PM If you like the 2.0L so much, just put a wood block under your gas pedal so it doesn't go down all the way. Voila all the pep of a 2.0L engine. ;) Kurt Dolphin Overton 11-06-2001, 01:56 AM So I have a GC-675??? cool:confused: Iowannaski 11-06-2001, 11:29 AM Originally posted by 63Alpine Voila all the pep of a 2.0L engine. ;) Not quite the same as the 1996cc turbocharged engine though  Marc Sawaya 11-06-2001, 12:22 PM Heh, I changed my info to reflect my car more accurately- is there a number for manual transmission? skywalker 11-06-2001, 04:41 PM Voila all the pep of a 2.0L engine. Not quite the same as the 1996cc turbocharged engine though So Turbocharge your 2.5L and keep the block under the gas pedal. He he... :D Silverscooby27 11-06-2001, 04:44 PM Dammit, I'm driving a GM!:p Iowannaski 11-06-2001, 04:54 PM Originally posted by Marc Sawaya Heh, I changed my info to reflect my car more accurately- is there a number for manual transmission? yeah, but it's the twelfth character - and it's a letter. IceOwl 11-07-2001, 02:40 AM GF485? um....yeah...i rule! Marc Sawaya 11-18-2001, 04:04 PM My 12th digit is a 4... the last letter is the 11th digit. I just realized saying GM67 is redundant because the RS is the only GM/C with the 2.5L engine. I think it's funny that we call all pre 02 Imprezas GC8s then, because there has never been a GC8 produced in America, right? I'm rolling over here. jeremy JaiMak 11-19-2001, 12:17 AM Still like to refer to the old shape as GC8 though... easier that way. Albert 11-19-2001, 11:34 AM yea, lets stick with GC8 Iowannaski 11-19-2001, 02:14 PM Originally posted by Marc Sawaya because there has never been a GC8 produced in America, right? there has never even been a GC8 sold in america. and yes, G*67 is redundant, but no more redundant than "Impreza 2.5 RS" andyC 11-20-2001, 03:05 AM what about the # for a 1.8 I'll go look when I get home... like you guys care anyway... ;) JaiMak 11-20-2001, 06:45 PM Take this into account - the coupe body "GM" is quite rare, so if we refer to our cars as "GC"s it will work a little better across the board, UK guys will know, Japanese parts dealers will understand.. etc. Or just stop hemming and hawing about it and just stick to GC8 -everybody is happy! |
