Anyone had a gearbox broken on a modified and tried to take it back to the dealer to put it under warranty?
I revved to 4500rpm and rode the clutch I have an Exedy race clutch and it was the first time I revved it and the first gear was just smashed into pieces.
Will try and take it to the dealer but don’t think they will warranty it, if not will go for a Hollinger Dogbox, anyone have their gearbox repaired at no charge who have their car modified?
Feedback appreciated, Subaru make a decent gearbox!

You mean to say that you did a 4,500 rpm launch, riding the clutch on a much grippier clutch than stock and you want it to be covered under drivetrain warranty? SOA won't cover any car it thinks has been launched in first gear, have you been under a rock or something, this has been a highly talked about development lately.
Good luck, the dealer will just laugh at you. Thanks for further substantiating their case against us.

NO Harm in trying.

Hopefully i find a service manager who turns a blind eye.

Anyone know of one?

I'll fix him up.

You're joking, right?

The reason Subarus have crap clutches is so the gearboxes don't break.

They will not lose in the long run... You are a very small minority. Sucks, but it's true.

Glenn is serious in his reponse, if jocular in his answer. Clutches are the "safety valve" for the transmissions in powerful AWD cars. When you upgrade to something with more clamping force, all of that force has to go somewhere. It's why, when you do a high-rev clutch drop with the WRX, you smell burning clutch. Better than than busting the tranny.

Subaru makes a first-rate gearbox, all else being equal. There are guys making CRAZY horsepower (Imprezer, Alfriedesq and a couple of others) who are on stock transmissions. I think that it's unfair to bash Subaru in this case. People have been driving the crap out of their cars, and blown trannies are a rarity. I think that there's a reason for that.

Just my .02.

My 0.2 everyone knows Subaru is AWD and the advantage of AWD is the takeoff, obviuosly the moron who designed the gearbox should have had the hindsight to realize that we don’t want to ride the clutch and the fry it, put an aftermarket crippier clutch.
Then obvioulsy with that clutch there will be no slip and all the strain will be on the box.
Subaru lift your game.
I don’t see any GTR boxes braking.

you want me to let you in on a little secret?

Unless you got scammed HUGELY no one here paid 80-100 K for their car. If you want to compare skyline gearboxes go ahead just pick something that is close to equal in price/rarity.

And if you did pay 80 for your wrx can i interest you in some water front realestate in afganistan? This time of year is just lovely:lol:    :D

later:rolleyes: robert

A tire smoking, clutch dropped, first gear launch with is NOT the intended advantage for AWD. Every AWD owner "should" know this.

The advantage of AWD is gobs of grip for better handling in traction compromising conditions: Rain, snow, gravel, etc.

I refuse to believe that engineers at any company with AWD said, "I know let's make this car AWD so we can blast people off the line!"

AWD is an advantage, better takeoffs is a side effect of AWD but not necessarily an intended advantage. Grip and control is what it's meant for.

Good luck trying to find that magical dealer that will spot you a new tranny. Your problem is clearly not Subaru's fault. Sorry, but it's the truth.

All jokes aside, if you put in a grippier clutch because you have a modded engine (if your engine is stock you wasted money on the clutch) why would you expect Subaru to pay for damage you caused yourself?

It would be different if it was something unrelated to your mods, but fair is fair.

Did the car come with a label that said "mod away, the gearbox can handle anything"?

And even if I put a grippier clutch in, I don't think I'd be dropping it in 1st gear. These engines can develop a lot of torque, and the with AWD you have a ton of grip. Something has to give. In your case it was the gearbox.

Subaru did not design their AWD system for drag racing. They designed it for all weather safety and performance, as pointed out by other posters.

Isn't stange that Subuaru shows the 0-60 in 5.4 in their commercial and right after that they says "that's the beauty of Subaru AWD"? Meaning it's the AWD that makes this car accelerate at 5.4, so if someone saw that commercial and wanted to buy the car based of the 0-60 acceleration they would most likely read the Car & Driver article. Then one day they see an S4 and want to race, the first thing that's gonna come to their mind is, "if I want to beat this car I have to dump the clutch at 5K, just like in the Car & Driver test" bye bye tranny, so why do they advertise something they don't want you to do? I think it's crazy to dump 227 HP to the ground in a spit second and hope for the best, if you get a FWD car and put really good tires on the car and you do the same and somehow it hooks up right off the line you would probably experience similar serious problems. I have only tried launching a couple times and smelled the clutch burn and got worried, I slipped the clutch at 4K, any lower rpms usually result in a bog unless you are careful.

I think that latest Subaru ad opens them up to all sorts of stuff with _stock_ warranty claims. If they never mentioned the C&D 0-60, they could say they never meant for it to be driven that way, but when they quote it...

On the other hand, if you've modified the clutch, I personally don't think any of that applies anymore.

the beauty of Subaru AWD

They use that tagline for all of their products.

Subaru can have their car, and i'll buy a Evo 7

No, gripppier tires will not result in the same catastrophic results as a stronger clutch, because the clutch still slips, irrespective of what the tires do.

You can clutch dump the car and run 5.4-sec. 0-60s all you want, but you will need a new clutch sooner, rather than later. You won't blow up the tranny, however.

Nobody is saying that Subaru is the only car in the world, or the best car in the world. I think that people are simply commenting on the fact that people slag Subaru for things that aren't Subaru's fault. With the stock clutch, you wouldn't have broken the tranny.

As Mark at TurboXS said during a recent conversation, "Subaru knows what they're doing. They have millions of dollars in R&D into the car..." which is true. They put a clutch in the car that works well in the driveline.

Buy an Evo 7 whenever they show up, buy anything you like. That is certainly your prerogative. But modding a car means fessing up when something breaks as a result of that mod. You play to pay, which is why I don't go in for serious modding.

Gary, this isn't the same WRX you were
--adding a big Garrett turbo to
--had a wet nitrous kit on, and
--were taking off the road for a while whilst running 500+hp (these are all from your posts on these boards)???

I hope you have two WRXs and you aren't trying to get warranty work done on that poor beast!

Was this the $2800 gearbox that broke? Its been a couple of months since the post so I guess we know the result of the gearbox testing ;)

you think mercedes does that out of the goodness of their hearts or could it maybe the 40% premium you pay on the cost of the car for the name on the hood. besides I think if you put a racing clutch in a E320 and started snapping it into gear from 4.5k Rpms and the tranny broke, even mercedes would'nt jump at the chance to repair your car under warranty. Be a little realistic.
