View Full Version : Jesus, can I do ANYTHING to MY98 RS for performance? * blowing off steam*
Ripper_AWD 11-05-2001, 07:08 PM Well I am going nuts. Basically, in a nut shell, it seems from what I've gathered from everyone I cannot get an afternarket intake for my car that won't run me into problems. Then people tell me the SAFC won't help that problem. The borla headers have problems. Then people tell me opening my exhaust too much on my N/A 2.5 RS will do more depleting of low end torque than gain hp. No one seems to have a chip for my car since JCSports is out (even if they were here I would probably be screwed by thier customer service department). What the hell CAN I spend my money on !?!? I have some money and need to buy something!!! I can't help it it's driving me off the WWWWAAAALLLLLLLLLLLL! ............... ok that felt better. :p
Contact Larry at www.imprezars.com
He's got a chip you can use...actually its a piggy back chip similar the the JC Sports one.
Also..you can get ANY exhaust you want just don't go over 2.25".
Larry (as mentioned above) has a track pipe (for use on the 98 RS ONLY) that will eliminate one of your cats.
You could also get a Muffler from him too if you wish.
Also Larry has lightened N1 pulley sets for your car too.
Try that for starters.
Tats.
Iowannaski 11-05-2001, 07:54 PM when all else fails, add lightness!
Ripper_AWD 11-05-2001, 08:06 PM I hear you no more fat girls in my car  . The problem is I have an obsession for ADDING things to my car not removing them. (Even though I have taken out my spare tire and jack)
p-car 11-05-2001, 09:12 PM Yup, you can add a "No Fat Chicks" sticker:lol:
I kinda bitched about the same thing to Mike Shields a few weeks ago and he said the best choice for "real power" is to add a EJ20 2.0 turbo motor, electronix and trans. Barring that, he said..."talk to Trey".
In my quest for NA power, I just ordered a Brullen header and exhaust and plan to put Cobb street cams on in a couple of months. The idea of a chip sounds good, but I want proof that it really works not just anecdotal reports of "it feels faster".
skywalker 11-05-2001, 09:25 PM This may not add horsepower, but you can out handle any car on the road by working on the suspension. In the end you will have a faster car then even an M3 in the twisty's. Just a thought...
That was also the first thing I worked, suspension, then brakes then HP. You need something to be able to handle the HP increase.
63Alpine 11-05-2001, 09:48 PM Don't be getting on the M3 now. :) It be all sorts of bad in the twisties.
In all seriousness, contact Cobb Tuning, they will help you.

bratmantlz 11-05-2001, 09:52 PM well let me see i have a intake.. you can get a maf adapter from suby sports, good service and people! you can get pullies from em! i am getting mine soon! i also have exhaust... 2.25 i beleive, ss pipe... from larry. i also have a safc. that does work.... i know bc i have a friend in a 01 impreza who cant keep up with me.. he has intake and exhaust.. he got the pullies from suby sports and now he pulls on me.. ie why i am getting the pulllies. the 99 impreza have the wussie maf. http://www.theracernetwork.com/public_html/yabbattach/engine.JPG
Penphoe 11-05-2001, 10:28 PM with the intake. The 98's have MAS's I believe which are a bit sturdier than the 99's MAF's, or is hte MAS/MAF flipped around? Anywayz, you can get an intake like a Minnam/Technik intake, SAFC to adjust the fuel. You can also get an exhaust for your car. I wouldn't go any larger athan 2.25" tubing for the exhaust.
LaterZ!
Darren!!
Keiho 11-05-2001, 10:47 PM Yup, the MY98s don't have a problem with blowing mafs. The 98s actually are quite nice...you can turbo them easily, or go NA easily as well.
Intake, exhaust, and fuel computer will do wonders as long as the fuel computer is tuned properly.
Ripper_AWD 11-05-2001, 11:21 PM So suby sports sells a MAF adapter? Does that mean it will just let me keep my MAF on my car? (this sounds stupid but the Maf is the electrical looking box right? :D ) So if this is the case, what intake should I get for MY98?
yebokmj 11-06-2001, 10:58 AM I did the whole NA build up first exhuast, pulleys and air intake. But in my quest to make me truely happy Turbo was the route to take. Now my car is truely fast and at only 5psi. I have had no major problems, no tranny or engine problems and weee is the car fast.
Joshua
For the record the NA build up was quick but not fast.
Julian 11-06-2001, 12:21 PM Does the track pipe eliminate a cat or the resonator in the stock mid-pipe? The cats (two) are both attached to the same middle section of pipe...a flange in front of the first cat, a flange after the last cat.
You can get a full exhaust system, there are other companies that make headers (Brullen, MRT, etc.). It's just a matter of money.
Of course, you are screwed for cams.
JaiMak 11-06-2001, 04:26 PM Power wise, I agree, there aren't many things you can do unless it's custom-
2yLite (on this board) is running with custom DOHC billet cams, intake, custom headers, custom exhaust, AFC, etc.. and it's pretty damn quick..
But if I were you, and wanted power... chances are your car is almost paid off. Wait a wee bit and motor swap the bastard with a USDM EJ20T engine, hopefully they will become easier to source in the near future, or just get a used motor from Australia or something to that effect.
Otherwise, you're in the same boat with the rest of us GC8'ers, more mods for a 6 month old WRX than for our 9 year old platform!!!
Julian...
The Track pipe eliminates the 2nd cat and the resonator.
Tats.
Julian 11-06-2001, 06:47 PM Is the MY98 exhaust system different from the MY00? MY00 header and cat section shown below:
http://www.jetlink.net/~okayfine/stockheader.jpg
I really don't know. I wondered that also.
Anyone?
Tats.
8Complex 11-06-2001, 07:49 PM I believe the cat. section is the same, but the header section is different as I believe that they have single exhaust ports instead of seperate ones.
BTW, the MY98's have LESS worry about their MAF sensors (over MY99's) and S-AFC's will work on them just fine.
Ripper_AWD 11-06-2001, 11:09 PM Has anyone used Larry Ganz's intake and made it into a CAI with his parts and instructions for the MY98? If so... how does it run and did you have any problems?
Andrew 11-07-2001, 04:17 AM nitrous
cakagan 11-07-2001, 12:12 PM I wouldn't rush out and buy an SAFC until you do more research. Notice that the guys raving about them don't have a '98 RS. Do a search here and you'll find more often than not that SAFC's don't work with our '98s. When you add an intake to the '98s you won't get the rich/lean problem the '99s had. I did a search on "98RS" and "SAFC" in the archives and here's one to start with: 98RS - When is an AFC req'd? (http://www.i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=58114&highlight=98RS)
Also, you guys are nuts for driving around without a jack, much less your spare. What do you do when you get a flat, call a tow truck? That's just...un-sane.
-Chris
bratmantlz 11-07-2001, 07:23 PM suby sports had the adapters i saw them yesterday. and you can couple that up with a intake from uhh weapon r just use a real filter not the foam***** they give you. yes the maf is the lil box right by the air box. by the sidefenderwall. and the 98 maf is good and the 99 sucks.
Here's the setup I have in my MY98 Impreza 2.2 (will fit the 2.5 RS).

Turn3 R&D Kit...out of business, but if you get an adapter you can build something similar. Check out http://www.cobbtuning.com/ for toys. They have stuff that'll fit the MY98 no problem.
Now, why are you so bent on mods? I have an intake, swaybar, short shifter and I turned the fastest raw stage time in Modified 4WD at the last rallycross. I kicked some serious WRX ass in my little 2.2 NA wagon. :D Of course, a SNAFU on the last stage where I overshot a turn and scrubbed off six seconds pushed me to 8th, but I still claim the fastest single stage time! ;)

ImprezaRS dot com 11-11-2001, 01:41 AM Please please please buy the MAF adapters from me :D
I have two intakes for the MY98, one at www.ImprezaRS.com/product2.htm#filtermaf and another at the top of the page at www.ImprezaRS.com/shoppingcart.htm that removes the accordian tubing from between the MAF and the air plenum.
I also sell the MAF adapters alone at www.ImprezaRS.com/product2.htm#mafadapter
I can also tell you how to make a weapon-R intake into a CAI like the Cobb using a PRM racing filter found at www.ImprezaRS.com/product2.htm#prmfilter
The track pipes were discontinued, but I do sell stromung exhaust that fits a MY98, as do the lightweight pulleys I sell for MY98 www.ImprezaRS.com/product2.htm#pulley
And, I buy the torque chips direct from the manufacturer and sell them at www.ImprezaRS.com/shoppingcart.htm !!!
Larry
Ripper_AWD 11-11-2001, 09:27 PM Hey Larry I bought your intake just recently. Thinkin about buying the pulleys next.
ImprezaRS dot com 11-11-2001, 09:35 PM In the old days the response was Cool cool cool!
...Now it is Coolio!
