View Full Version : Need help with unsettling rumors
Giya144 11-08-2001, 02:10 PM Hello iclub! I am going to be buying a new car very soon and have seriously thought of either a WRX or an RSX. I like them both for different reasons.
But, after looking around on this site and some rsx sites, I've noticed that the WRX may have a windshield and trunk fire problem. What's the final word on all of this? I've read posts were people say its nothing and some where people say there should be a recall.
Anyone know the "facts" on these two "issues?"
Thanks!:D
chkltcow 11-08-2001, 02:25 PM Uhhh.... trunk fire?
What??
hibeam781 11-08-2001, 02:26 PM How would someone's windshield catch on fire?
But seriously, I'd be curious to hear the facts too...
LordBass 11-08-2001, 02:27 PM The trunk fires are caused by uncooperative trunkmonkeys angry for being banished to the trunk after acting up -- throwing poo at other cars, consuming adult beverages in the vehicle then throwing empties at other cars, etc.

chkltcow 11-08-2001, 02:30 PM Give us some pointers on where you found this information.. it's the first I've ever heard of it.
Are the RSX guys complaining about the WRX as bad as the VW/Audi owners are? "Well your car may be faster and cost half as much as ours but YOU don't have the nice interior that the S4 does!" :)
Giya144 11-08-2001, 02:34 PM The trunk fire I heard was caused by one of two things. Either the muffler was to close to the bottom of the trunk and heated up the trunk until the fabric smoldered or caught on fire, or it was caused by a heat shielding problem with the exhaust and the trunk.
I'm pretty sure I read it somewhere on this board...maybe the dude just had several open gas cans in his trunk! :)
What about the windshield issue?
totoherbs 11-08-2001, 02:58 PM What about the windshield issue?
well people tend to take thies cars off road more then, um well ya theyd be stuid to take the rsx off road, but when ur playing in the dirt your more likly to get a rock in the window.
Never heard of a fire, but have heard of the soundproofing black tar stuff becoming melted due to heat. I head they are working on, or have solved this problem. No fires yet though...

JGard 11-08-2001, 05:47 PM yeah...these problems you speak of are news to me, too
Alpine 11-08-2001, 05:50 PM There was a guy here who had a softball-sized rock dropped on his windshield from an overpass on the highway, but it didn't even go through the windshield. If you search around the forums, most people's complaints about the WRX are cheap paint, awful tires, and lack of good factory options, not the tendency of the car to combust in places other than the engine.

Yeah...this must have been the original story. Thanks for clearing that up. Think some people read that and changed it to "soundproofing black tar stuff becoming metlted AND TURNING CAR INTO RAGING INFERNO." Stupid people.
I did ask Subaru directly themselves...they elected to take the 5th amendment! :) jk.
silberREX 11-08-2001, 05:56 PM My trunk came with a extra piece of felt glued over that area...

WRX Fan 11-08-2001, 10:44 PM Hey, if you like loud, noisy and slow cars with all the glorious hard to control torque steer that is characteristic of a front wheel drive car I would go with the RSX.
If you want to kick some butt, go with the WRX, nuff said.
Does it snow where you live? If it does and you are even considering the RSX you need to get some immediate medical attention, perhaps a head examination to start.
Keith99RS 11-08-2001, 11:02 PM Sport Compact Car just did a shoot out with the RSX Type S and the WRX Wagon. The wagon pretty much whupped it in all catagories. I think the WRX is much more roomy too.
I say get the RSX just because you don't know the answer to such a simple question...
