I just bought the BBS wheels from Wes and i dont want the tires. They are the stock RE 070's. Whoever wants to pay the 40 bucks or so to have them removed can have them. I just need them off to powdercoat em. Pretty good deal. They probably have one summer left. I can bring one to the meet if you want to check them out.

Do not powder coat forged wheels, even at very low temp. you will greatly weaken the wheel. There are many threads on here and IWSTI that have the exact information backing this up.

I still need these tires gone. First person to call me tonight or tomorrow to make arrangements get them. Still up for grabs.

The powder coating thing is just a scare. Gilbert down in Cali has had his powder coated for two years now and still no issues. Some say that they weaken the wheels, but out of all the people I've spoken with and know have had no issues what so ever. I can call him just to double check, but he's done a crap load of driving, LA to San Diego, LA to Las Vegas lots of times. I think with the heat and speeds down there if something were to happen it would've happened by now. I'll do some research though throw you a pm.

When are you powder coating them? Next week?

Just got off the phone with him. I guess he painted his wheels himself. The biggest question is, how much weaker though if you do get them powdercoated.

He says go for it, thousands of people get their wheels powdercoated, even professionals.

No, powder coating rims is not dangerous if properly prepared, ask Kawasaki or any of the other motorcycle
manufacturers about powder coating, their factory rims are metallic coated in various colors and styles. The problem
lies in the media blasting done in preparation. Make sure that your rims (if aluminum alloy) are ONLY blasted with glass
bead which can actually strengthen your rims and repair small stress fractures. If the rims are blasted in another media
such as Aluminum Oxide or Coal Slag, the sharp edges of the particles will create scratches, leading to stress
fractures, leading to rim failure. Goose Creek Uses only glass bead on Aluminum Rims.

We always prefer the wheels not to be powder coated because of the heat involved. They're heat treated during the manufacturing process so reheating them isn't the best thing. Another reason is what if the finish doesn't come out right and the people powder coating it does it again to try to get the finish right....heated again....

Additionally, it depends on the alloy and method of manufacture. 6160-T6 for example, has a tendency to become structurally unsound when it's heated to 400f for extended periods of time and is commonly in use in remote control heli's only. For that reason, I do not coat anything from remote control planes or heli's.

Vacuum castings and extrusions in most cases will not be an issue as they are not pure aluminum. Basically if someone comes to me with a stock wheel from HD or where ever you will be ok as all automotive products contain a number of other materials making it much less temperature sensitive, and will not change properties under the relatively low temp of powder coating (400 deg F average).BMW, Harley and many of the sport bikes, already powder their parts at the factory. BMW has been doing it for 15 years on both car and motorcycle rims and other parts and yes even on all their race products.

If someone comes to me with a one off CNC cut "billet" wheel I would ask some specific questions about the material composition before you heat it up. The most important thing to ask is: What is the alloy? If you can't find that out you should probably not heat it up too much. There are more powder manufacturers making low cure powders now, so that may be an option for some of the more exotic alloys. I would turn down a job before I took a risk on an unknown alloy. I went and purchased a metallurgists hand book that gives specs on hundreds of alloys including max temp. It was VERY expensive but has come in handy a few times.

Some racing clubs do not allow powder coated materials to be used for roll bars and other products. This has led to speculation that powder somehow affects the structural integrity of the parts. Instead, it is rule due to powder flexibility properties. There is some concern that a poor weld could break and the powder would not crack as liquid paint would to reveal the defect underneath.

The much more important questions to ask when you have coating done on your cast rims are:

Is a burn off oven used to remove the old coating? This is an extremely high temp process and can warp parts of all types.

Is the wheel prepped with glass bead only? Aluminum parts prepped with aluminum oxide or other sharp edged media (vs. bead) will scratch the surface, and lead to stress fractures. Bead will actually repair small scratches and make the wheel stronger. I only use glass bead.

I will just have to see if i am willing to have these painted depending on price. I know powdercoating has a better, tougher finish to battle the crap on the roads here in alaska. So i dont know if i would be willing to spend hundreds on paint to have it chipped and scratched.

These tires are still up for grabs. I am going to the garage on base to have them removed, should be around 40 bucks. So 40 bucks takes them.

Mike... if Jake is willing to take these off himself I would let him. My experience is most tire shop have NO IDEA how hard the side walls are and will scratch up the rims... Jake does all his own tire swaps.

Jake, Mike would need to get these done today so he can get them powder coated by the weekend.

Regardless of who does it I hope they have the proper experience and or machine. They are low profile tires and 17 inch rims. I took my car to Alaska tire and rim before and it took 3 huge guys just to get the damn thing on. Have to be careful not to ruin the rims ;). That's usually why I just go to Subaru and let them mess with it.
