View Full Version : Passive Sophisticated Rear Wheel Steering.
The GC8 is so equipped. The name is from the sales brochure. A little known fact. My question; Is the new WRX so equipped as well or did they delete this in the new rear suspension design.?.?
Is this why the Scoobynet.co.uk board calls the new WRX the "Soft Scoob"? (edit) A description I am sure is not warranted.
I've never heard anything about this...
garface 11-09-2001, 05:47 PM Yup old Imprezas had it, but NOBODY believes me:monkey: :D
HondaH8er 11-09-2001, 06:28 PM When you say "old" ones have it, what do you mean? Does that include the GC8 like 5252 said?
Longshot 11-09-2001, 07:07 PM Yeah I heard someone talking about this recently.. apparently as you turn the steering wheel all four wheels turn, not just the front two..
The rears only turn slightly, but on cars like the VR4 its easily noticeable. They called it four wheel steering....
Oh, and from what I heard all the scoobies have it, not sure about the new ones, but GC8's definitely do..

..at least thats what I'm told :)
Keiho 11-09-2001, 07:35 PM I think that's with the stock suspension though right?
Would changing the spring/strut negate the effect of the "rear wheel steering" that's built into the stock suspension?
Not that it matters much...my car still handles good. :)
Thanks for reminding me about this neat fact about my car...I'd pretty much forgotten about it. :D
Iowannaski 11-09-2001, 07:40 PM ok, I don't want to sound like a zealot, but did the G*67 have it? I'm really going to start harping against the use of the term "GC8" because GC8's had all sorts of things our Impreza RS's don't. Like a 2liter turbocharged engine.
8Complex 11-09-2001, 08:21 PM Guys... the rear suspension geometry is setup in such a way that when you turn and the body rolls, the rear wheel on the side that is compressed gains toe OUT, and the side that is expanded gains toe IN. This makes for a very easy passive rear steering setup that you can actually see work if you watch how the rear suspension moves when you jack up the car from the rear diff (both wheels should toe inward slightly).
Peaty 11-09-2001, 08:29 PM During cornering the lateral forces that are created are purposely used to distort the bushing of the rear suspension arms, causing the outer wheel to turn in (toe-in) and the inside wheel to turn out (toe-out) slightly, hence passive rear steering.
My Contour had this as do lots of cars. Not rocket science but works nicely.

*cough*
And the new models are missing a lot of things too, like 247hp, 4-pot brakes, variable valve timing, and 205/50/16 tires... so I take it they shouldn't be referred to as GD8 models? ;)

...just joshin' ya btw :)
yamarocket630 11-10-2001, 03:22 PM ...cool, now I can wow everybody and tell them my car has factory four wheel steering!
Eric SS 11-10-2001, 04:05 PM hehe.. leave it up to Subaru to turn bumpsteer into something that sounds positive :)

HndaTch627 11-10-2001, 05:16 PM eric- i was thinking the same thing. THis isn't a new technology by ANY means. Just the design of suspension.
The old preludes have ACTIVE 4 wheel steering that just rocks. Would love to get ahodl of one and play with it for a while.
