View Full Version : header-only tuning?

first of all, i know a header is the last thing ppl do to their exhaust system, and usually only with upgraded turbos...

with that being said, i have just a header/uppipe installed for comapny R&D Purposes and was wondering if there was any tuning I could do to make it advantageous? I'm getting a UTEC next week, and am just gonna run the stock map, and maybe increase the boost a lil w/ everything else being stock except the header. Seems like there's more top end, so i would assume that I can tweak the tune a lil to make use of the installed part?

thanks.

Well when I installed my header I noticed a number of changes which required/allowed for further tuning adjustments. For example, your boost profile will change specifically regarding wastegate duty-cycle to accommodate the increased flow, and (to my surprise) I noticed a huge change in my EGT temps. Likely this was due to the lack of thermo barrier as I didn’t wrap the header and was loosing more heat. So I pushed another couple degrees of timing getting my EGTs back up to 1550’ish under full load, which resulted in mo power ;)

Hope that helps…

Fwiw, advancing timing doesn't usually raise egt's while on boost. It does raise in cylinder temps(by creating more pressure), which might raise egt's, but on boost it usually makes more combustion occur earlier, which in turn lowers egt's. Either way, if your boost is where it is, I don't see you gaining a lot of power by tuning for your new mod, so you might just wanna save the time. There should be an increase in power anyways from less backpressure being on the engine.

Doah.. that’s right, it’s retard timing which equals more torque + higher EGT’s.. Well none the less, whatever tweaks I made at the time (combination of fuel, timing, boost) got the EGT’s back up there post header install. Point here for OP is the header install lowered EGT’s allowing for a little more room to tune more aggressively ;)

well, since the EGT's are lowered due to a lack of wraping... wouldn't making the in-cyl temps higher to raise EGT's be bad for the engine and possible the engine part of the header? sounds like a more aggresive tune would be possible w/ some header gas cooling from unwrapped headers, but then why would people want to wrap their headers?

hmmmm, or maybe I should just go get some header wrap?
