Can anyone point me to that thread? I saw it on here awhile back but I can't for the life of me find it. Can someone help?

if so, just take it apart, and desolder the LED and install a red one. super simple

Could it be more simple, like painting the LED? Is it a bulb?

ITs a serfice mount LED (in green) so its a little hard to color it.
