View Full Version : Decelleration in 1st and 2nd
streko 11-07-2006, 04:20 PM When I'm off the gas in 1st or 2nd under 3500 rpms, my car will sometimes feel like it hiccups and sort of throws me forward a little bit like it's trying to stall. Is this normal? If I give it a tiny bit of gas but still decellerating, it doesn't do that.
I ahve an 03 WRX with a few mods
viper74656 11-07-2006, 04:35 PM Do you mean you feel the hiccup when you first lift off the gas or is it that you are coasting/decelerating And feel the hiccup then?
streko 11-07-2006, 04:38 PM It happens when I coast in low gear at low rpm, but the same feeling sort of as when I first lift off the gas.
I can decel from 7000 rpm and it doesn't really hiccup until it reaches under 3500 or so.
viper74656 11-07-2006, 04:43 PM I've never heard of this before to be honest, so I don't think its normal but don't really know. :(
Hmm... something new to try on the way home from work.
moogoob 11-09-2006, 12:00 PM My car does this as well.
can cruise smoothly in 1st and/or 2nd with giving gas in the 1k-4k range. When you let up from the gas, it will begin to slow as the revs drop, then start to jolt forward in a pulse. Almost like its about to stall.... but not the same and is not really close to stalling at all.
Typically in traffic or rolling up to a light where you want to be in low gear but not accellerating just yet, or anticipating a stop.
(mods: intake, lw flyweel, catback, agx/p1's, kartboy SS and F/R bushings) I'm pretty sure is occured prior to any mods, but I cant say if it is worse or not.

exactly, i know it's not going to stall but still feels like it wants to. i asked some evo owner he says he gets it too. maybe it's our awd combined with our lack of torque down there.
stu1811 11-09-2006, 02:11 PM All manual cars I have driven do this in first. Not so much in 2nd

I'll second this

lack of TQ? no i wouldnt say so. Name your mods.

cobb stage 2/exhaust
no complaints when the turbo's spinning, but can't get around the fact that it's still a 2.0L
Dr_Holmes 11-09-2006, 05:48 PM The same thing happens to me. Same mods. I believe it is normal. Maybe some nicer trans fluid would help.
moogoob 11-09-2006, 06:50 PM i use the US cocktail, and had a few others in there, so i dont think its a fluid thing.
I dont think a lack of torque.

Not my tercel.
and i have had this in 3rd as well.
It not that we are moving too slow and its about to stall, its still moving fast enough to stay running.
Another way to describe it:
lets say you do a no gas start off in first. slowly let out clutch, start rolling forward. littl by little the car goes a bit faster(still no gas). after it has come up to speed, it will pulse forward and buck a little. Not the buck that its too slow and wil stall, just a push forward every half second or so.
02WRX06STI 11-11-2006, 05:06 PM saw that one of the guys that said they had this problem had a LW flywheel.. possibly the lighter roatating mass has to do with it???
j0ey44 11-11-2006, 10:40 PM Hardend tranny mount?

This makes some sense.
My bone-stock 05 RS does this in first and second.
My previous vehicles, a 95 GMC S(l)o(w)noma, and an 89 Toyota 4Runner would do that in first only, and only at very low RPMs. Despite an overall lack of power, those trucks had shorter low gears and more available torque below 2k rpm than my Subaru.
Urpic 11-12-2006, 01:16 AM Okay I know this prob won't be of any help cuz it is kinda unrrelated except to whatyou said.
"it will pulse forward and buck a little. Not the buck that its too slow and wil stall, just a push forward every half second or so."
If Im getting up in miles on my oils change as I get above liek 5k rpms and the turbo is spinning it'll sorta jolt like you said, but as soon as I get an oil change runs smooth as can be.
*boggles*
any solution to this issue? I just started getting this. I'm at 75k.
dbrunner 01-29-2007, 02:32 AM My car is the same way, just thought it had something to do with it being AWD turbo.
I notice as I let off the gas in higher gears it will throw me out of my seat a little bit, like a little hickup. I'm thinking after I run the motorvac machine on it, and clean out the throttle body it might fix some things. Though someone mentioned transmission mount, and that makes alot of sense too.
I can't recall having the car doing the hiccup decelleration or being hesitant when my car was first purchased. It was only recently that I feel the sluggishness. I'm hoping that it's as simple as the fuel pump since my fuel meter is way off too.
