Soon, the Mercedes CLS won't be the only so-called four-door coupe on the market. Porsche is working on the Panamera, and Volkswagen and Audi are developing sleek four-door models which will carry the "coupe" designation.

Now, our sources inGermany are telling us that BMW will also be introducing a four-door "coupe," often referred to as a CLS-fighter, for the 2009 model year.

Not much is known about BMW's entry into this unique and exclusive market, but we have heard that BMW has given up on the idea of rear-hinged doors and will instead design this luxury automobile with conventional doors. -Brenda Priddy

Admittedly I am not a big fan of the CLS, so I don't really 'get' this BMW either... ofcourse I don't like big cars... but I do think it looks nice if the rendering is accurate.
But still not as nice as some of the renderings of the Porsche Panamera.

(not sure if the images will come up - sometimes they seem to work, other times not so much)

Yea, and your point is what exactly??
They are using a reference photo to base their rendering on - what is wrong with that? That is how renderings of next-gen cars have been done for eons now.

I like the CLS. especially this one... IMHO the CLS was the first everday merc with some emotion in a long long time.

How can a four door be a coupe?

The CLS is (and im going out on a limb here) the most emotional sedan Mercedes Benz has ever made. Not to mention one of their most daring designs in a long long time. Thats saying a lot for a company that has been playing it safe in the design dept.

And look at all the manufactures who are scrambling to come out with an answer. :)

the back end of the cls looks like a smashed toothpaste tube that has been cut. i think its horribly ugly... the front end however looks nice, but not as nice as the front end of pretty much any bimmer

I believe the true technical definition of a "coupe" is a car that lacks a traditional B pillar. Someone correct me if Im wrong, no offense will be taken...:D

I could have sworn that a coupe meant 2 seats and 2 doors. Hence why the 2 - door RS has SEDAN written on the VIN plate since it seats more than 2. May vary from country to country though.

It's is all a marketing term - sure a coupe is historically a 2-door car, Mercedes, and now BMW are just trying to differentiate these swoopier 4-doors and their "regular" more upright/traditional S-class and 7-series cars.

How else can they charge an extra $10k+ if they simply called these "sedans"?!?

Wow, so it only took the rest of the industry 3 years to catch up with Saturn trying to create 4-door coupes. *sigh* A coupe has 2 doors people!
