If I were buying a new race shortblock I would buy one from an engine builder, not Gruppe-S.

So an engine builder doesn't build the motors for Gruppe-S?? Any reason why not to buy one, like known failures or anything of that nature? I have not heard of any issues with their motors.

They use an outside shop to machine, balance and assemble their motors, IINM. Having said that, I've never heard anything bad about Gruppe-S motors either.

I think his point is he'd rather work directly with the actual shop and lead tech that supervises the work and does the final assembly, not a reseller; for actual competition or "race" motors, that's been my personal preference too. Darn few subie engine "builders" do the machine work in-house...that equipment is very, very expensive.
