Hello all, First I will list my car info:

2002 WRX, HID installed. Wired into the factory harness wiring. Ballasts are connected to wires from pins 2 and 3 Running 15A fuses. Have had the HID for 2 years and this is the first time I've had this issue. DRL connector has been unplugged from behind the dash. I have JDM projector assemblies so the highbeams are separate. Wired on wires to pins 1 and 2.(2 is the power off the fuse box)

I drove yesterday night and everything was working fine. I did nothing to the car today besides drive it in the morning and noon. This morning the lights were working.

I noticed this b/c the LH(driver side) normal lights weren't working but the high beams on BOTH headlights were slightly on(the highbeam indicator in the dash was also slightly lit up). The first thing I did was remove my HID headlight and try the stock one. Exact same problem but b/c it is a halogen and high and low share the same bulb, the main light was slightly lit while the RH highbeam was partially lit as well. Note, the RH HID beam keeps working all this time.

Next I went to the fuse box, I checked the LH fuse(#8) and saw that it was burned out. Confused why the LH lights were still partially on, I replaced the fuse. On the first attempt to turn the lights on, the LH light lit up, flickered, then got dim as it was before. I went to check the fuse and it had just burned out again.

I then pulled the LH fuse all together but the LH light stayed dimly lit and both highbeams were partially on. I then pulled the LH relay and the LH light stayed on. I trying pulling the RH relay and/or fuse and on both tries, pulling the fuse/relay turned the RH assembly off completely and the high on the LH off.

So I figure the LH assembly is getting power from somewhere. Could it be pulling from the RH setup somehow?

Then I tried unplugging the LH assembly all together with the lights still on. When I did that, the highbeam on the RH assembly went off like it should be. When I plugged in the LH assembly, the highbeam on the RH partially goes on again. Ok weird. So the full circuit turns both highs partially on.

Also, if I pull the RH fuse(#9), both highbeams turn off completely

This is totally confusing me. Someone please offer help or advice. I will be taking it to a shop eventually if this persists.

Bump...

I'm having the exact same problem trying to install some JDM HID's. The LH fuse keeps blowing. If I leave that fuse out, the left HID comes on, and the right high beam. If I switch to high beam, the left HID goes out and both high beams are on, but VERY dim. But if I put a fuse back in the LH slot, it pops as soon as I turn the lights on.

what size is your LH fuse?

how are you wiring your HID's? are you using a relay? have you checked your high beam relay? is it in good condition?

regarding the OP, i think your high beam relay has an issue.

The original fuses were 15 amp. I replaced the LH one with a 20, blew that one, put in a 25, blew that one... I don't want to put anything bigger than that

I got some harnesses from SubyDude that plug into the stock headlight plug, then have the plug for the highbeams, and then two wires to go to the ballasts for the HIDs.

Went at it again, still the same problem. I made sure the grounds were perfect, double checked all my solders, everythings good.

It's just that one stupid fuse that keeps blowing!

So I thought maybe a ballast was bad, so I swapped ballasts....

After doing that, when turning on the headlights, both HIDs came on AND highbeams, my highbeam indicator was also on. Then when switching to highbeams, the highbeams themselves went out and HID's stayed on (highbeam indicator stayed on).

Switched some wires, and it was worse (don't remember what I did) then switched back to the correct wiring, and both fuses popped.

:furious: I feel like I am so close! This is frustrating because I'm good at wiring and this is NOT a complicated thing to wire up, but something is wrong somewhere and I can't find it.

Ok, they work perfect now

As it turns out, I am NOT the retard like I was starting to think I was, major relief. Turns out the so called "plug and play" harnesses I bought from SubyDude were wired WRONG. The high beam and HID negatives were switched, I noticed this when looking at a picture that had the stock headlight plug labelled, and noticed that the subydude harness were backwards.

I cut the wires, flipped them and re-soldered them together, now everything works like a charm!

What a relief! :) These things are sweeeet!

Email back from SubyDude says that the harness is not meant for HID's, just the regular JDM/EDM headlights.

You'd think they would note that on their site
