I've purchased a 2002 WRX wagon about a week ago. It runs very well and all electronics seem to work with no problem. Today I noticed there is a connector that is not connected to anything.

It is located above the driver's kick panel, under the lower dash trim - there is a whole bunch of wires there.
This female connector looks exactly the same as the front speaker connectors, except it is green, and only has 1 wire (black with red stripe) going into it. There is also a matching male connector (also green) that has a black wire with a white stripe going into it.

So I connected the two together (it just seemed like the right thing to do), turned on the car, and the Check Engine light started flashing. I then promptly turned the car back off, disconnected the connectors again, and turned the car on once more. Everything is fine now.

Does anyone know what those connectors are for? Should they be connected together, and if so, what could cause the Check Engine light to flash?

Thanks in advance for the help,
-Daniel

It isn't. Don't. They are 'test mode connectors'. You are not in 'test mode' so leave them alone.

Ok. Thanks for the reply. What's 'test mode' used for?

I believe it's used by the dealer during PDI

You also need to connect them for ECU re-flashing

btw, you REALLY don't want to be randomly connecting connectors together... even if they are the same shape/color, you risk blowing up some really expensive electronics.

Yeah, I wouldn't connect the mentioned connectors either if they wouldn't be in the way of my foot when I get in the car. I just had a feeling someone had disconnected something, the connectors were right next to each other, and so I thought they should be connected.

Could short out the electronic in the car and you will really be hurting then. Don't touch those.
