OK, i have been getting into RallyCross and some of them run into the night. I just made a lightbar for the front of the wagon, and want to mount some lights on it. I am going to start with 2 for now, then get more down the road. What would be the best light beam patern to get? Driving lights? I want the best combination of corner lighting, and down the road lighting. They will be used for more then just RallyX, id use them in the woods and all tha fun stuff as well. I was looking at the 130w KC Hilites Daylighter system, but im unsure of the beam pattern of it. Are Daylighters Long Range? Driving? I am trying to spend under 150 bucks on a system. Any input or suggestions are welcome!

Im looking for only 2 lights right now though. The best comprimise of a fog and long range. Another thing, im running in the "Rally Prepared" class, which states that you can only have 2 aux lights.

www.rallylights.com is a good source of lights.

Hella 4000's are really nice, but probably over your budget.

I run 2 driving, one pencil and one flood on my rally car.

For rallyx you won't need a pencil. Driving lights are probably your best choice.

I run the KC Daylighters on my 1999 XJ for nighttime/dusk offroading and informal "rallyX" stupidity. They have an excellent long range spot pattern and they can be easy adjusted (open wrench) within a few minutes to modify how far away the beams converge. They use standard H3 size halogen bulbs but I've only had luck obtaining the insanely high wattage OE (150W) H3 replacement bulbs thru KC. They take at least 2 years to rust noticeably which is pretty damn good compared to other brand's metal enclosures. However, when you send the units back to KC for non-rusted replacements (free) you will be between 3 and 4 weeks without lights. I would recommend getting the black units and additionally covering them with POR15 "paint". Also, do not use the KC wiring and wire covering -- its junk. I used the OE grommet but ran thicker wire thru and sealed the deal with silicon. Also, use a heavier duty ground connection than they provide. Their switch and relay are good but the plastic switch holder is flimsy, you may want to integrate the switch directly into your dash instead.

These lights are only good as a LD spot -- you will find yourself upside down in the inside bank of a turn if you do not get additional flood lights for corner and immediate visibility. You may be able to get away with running an additional set of Daylighters with a flood lens but I'd recommend buying actual flood lights instead (although 4 Daylighters mounted next to each other does look mean as hell).

Right now i am actualy looking at a set of used Old school Hella 3000's. They are the bigger 8 3/4" diameter and a 100w bulb. Id rather run some used Hella's then some new KC's.

As for my light bar, im not completly done with it. Still working on it as we speek. Right not im adding a few peices for strength and cosmetics. Its kinda more of a brush guard/light bar then anything. I designing it to protect my bumper from cones a well. Ill post a pic of the mock up that i did for a rough idea of the final product. The final product is gonna look so much better! Especialy when i get some lights on it!

The Hella Rallye 3000's are a done deal. Should have them by the end of the week! What do you think of my bar so far?

The hellas will do you fine for your off roading, I use the 150 watt KC Daylighters on my Jeep wrangler and they do excellent as well. I went with them because of the heavy chrome work on the Jeep and they were priced right. Plus they do light up the night for a long way off...:D

rallye 3000's will really do something special for that bar.

thinking of cleaning up the welds at all? if you don't want to grind down the welds, i'd think about coating it in a rubberized coating just for aesthetic. you could definitely afford to put four lights on that bar, i think that would look way better than just two up top, and you'd be able to aim them out more to the sides of the road for corners.

The Hella 3000 lamps are fantastic. :)

Definitely think about putting two foglamps (or even work/floodlamps angled outwards) on the bottom to give you nice spread of light to the side which is extremely useful for sharp turns.

I received the 3000's and have been slacking on getting the bar done lately. It should be complete this weekend. All i have left is some minor welding, and paint. I got the car all wired up with an OEM fog light switch, all 14G wiring from battery to the bulbs, 30A relay and 25A fuse. When i first started to design this bar, i wanted room for 4 lights up top. Well with these 3000's, i am not sure thats gonna happen. I was planning on 6in lights, not 8 3/4! When i get my Hella 500's ill have to get creative with mounting them. As for paint, i am using Winzer Black G.G.U (Grit, Gravel and Under body) The guys at our body shop recommend it and gave it to me. It is VERY durable and supposed to be chip proof. Its also water based which makes shooting it a lot easier. It will leave a semi-gloss orange peal effect which will help clean everything up a bit. As for the welds.. I have ground down most of them so it looks basically like one piece, but i did leave a few untouched. I think its going to look really nice once its all done... What do you think?

Here are some more pictures with the lights mounted.
