View Full Version : Noise after fluid change

I took my 2005 Subaru Legacy wagon to Oil Can Henrys last night and I had the oil, trany, front dif and rear dif fluid replaced and now I am having problems. The tech put 75/90 redline synthetic gear oil in both of the difs and Castrol multi vehicle ATF trany fluid in the trany. After I drove off from the place I noticed a grinding and popping noise that was coming from the back of my car when I turn left or right. I had a friend come by and disconnect the rear diff by putting the fuse in the fuse box and with just the front diff we drove around the parking lot and I still heard the noise. My friend then took the fuse out and drove the car around the parking lot and the noise was twice as loud. I called the Subaru dealership and he said that Oil Can Henrys did everything correct and that the fluid should have made no difference. This makes me think that something else is wrong with the car and that makes me upset. The car only has 26,041 miles on it. Can any of you Subaru gods help me or point me in the direction I need to go?

Thank You

If there is no noise going straight, but noise turning either way, it does sound like a diff problem. I'd take it straight to the dealer. If the Oil Can place messed something up, you want evidence as quickly as possible.

I called the dealer. The dealer told me to bring in my car and leave my car over night since they are full today and tomarrow. The service manager said if they have a no-show or one of their techs has some free time they would look at my car.

1. Is this still under warranty?
2. Since I took my car to the oil place, will this be covered?

My wife and I have been going to OCH for as long as I can remember and we have never had a problem. The 3 techs at OCH stayed an hour after closing last night to try and fix the problem with no luck. They did not have to do this, but they did because they felt guilty for messing up my car.

And yes, when I drive straight I hear no noise, but when I turn right or left I hear the noise.

I just wanted to give you subaru gods an update on my car. I took my car to the dealer and they said that OCH put the wrong gear oil in the front and rear difs. They said that the difs needed non synthetic gear oil because the synthetic gear oil was to slick and the difs were not getting properly lubricated. The service manager said that non synthetic gear oil sticks to the inside of the difs and lubricates the linkage inside by sticking to the metal. Anywho, my friend is a grease monkey at the same dealer and he talked to the guy who was working on my car and my friend told me that there was no damage and not to worry. So, the moral of the story is, when you take a Subaru into a non dealer lube place tell them to fill the diffs with NON Synthetic gear oil.

Something odd here - it is common to put M1 75w90 in WRXs rear diffs. That what I used to replace the OE fill and have had no problems. Unless they used Redline 75w90 NS, which has no friction modifiers.

Yes they put Red Line 75/90 synthetic in my difs.

Will this mess up be under warranty? Even though I had this done at OCH, will this be covered under warranty?

Yes they put Red Line 75/90 synthetic in my difs.

There are two Redline 75w90 lubes and both are synthetic. One has the "NS" designation and it is not for diffs, the other has no "NS" and is for diffs. I saw this on their Web site, so I can't offer much other advice.

Here is the link: http://www.redlineoil.com/products_gearlubricants.asp

I have no idea on the warranty question.

Gear oil choice doesn't matter in an automatic. The dealer has a right not to cover any damage that OCH caused. OCH should have a warranty on their work.
