View Full Version : How many sell outs do you know?

skeletor25rs

How many friends do you have, that you made through i-club or just through the cars, that sold their pre-02 Impreza for a WRX or other car? The best friend I've made from all this car crap just sold his 2001 RS for a Protege` 5. I'm kinda mad at him, but he seems really happy with the mazda, just for different reasons I guess than why he was happy with the Subaru. I'm just kind of venting here, post whatever experience you might have had with this.

funny thing is I know someone that did the same thing?!

Why would you trade a Subaru for a Protege MP3 or MP5??? They are nice looking cars but the subaru is just more car. If the MP3 had a bit more power or AWD I would understand but give me a break. They are 2.5RS wannabe's

I sold my RS for a wrx..doesn't make me a sell out. I'm kinda anoyed by the new rex crew...but we have some good ppl out there also.
Other than that, I know a few ppl who sold their RS for wrx...man, I remember when the rex came out and everyone was trying to sell their RS :)

you guys are right on the money, the "new crew" that the WRX is bringing with it. But we will prevail.

I like poking fun at the WRX people in the Factory Forced Induction forum when they get into the pissing matches about this 1/4 times. I know I could most definitely spend less money then Al has and come out at least a half second quicker.

Try not to sound so bitter guys! :) Some people are fans of good cars, not a specific kind of car. I wanted a 2-door Impreza a few years ago, but there was no way I was going to put up with the jerks at the local dealership then. So I let it go and stayed with Miatae.
But I do know the phenomenon.
I have a friend in Saint Louis who owned an RS a couple of years ago. (An '00 model? Black w/ gold rims.) Damn sharp car, but he traded for an M Roadster. Now he has a Ferrari 308 and he's kind of hard to talk to. He had a Porsche 928 for a while before the 308 and you could tell he was starting to change. I taught this guy how to change his oil in high school, but now we don't talk cars much. It's like he thinks that I just wouldn't understand. :( He has been seduced by the power of the dark side.

Come on, guys. This line of thinking is a little ridiculous...

...for several years now it's been "Subaru, when are you going to bring over the WRX?"

apparently it should have been "Subaru, bring over the WRX, but only for ME!"

I can understand your contempt for bailing on the RS for an MP5 or similar, but the WRX is still a Subie, and still an Impreza at that.

...so confused...
~Paul
(I bought my RS because I couldn't afford a WRX. I've never regretted it, though!!)

What about us ex-OBS owners that sold out for the WRX wagons!!!:D Don't forget about us sellouts!!!;)

Seriously, I've met some great people on this board, and even though they sold their RS for another car, I'm still good friends with them. Just cuz they changed their cars doesn't mean they themselves have changed!:)

No doubt the people are still the same. I have a friend with a WRX and he is a great person. The WRX would slaughter my NA MY01 RS. I totally agree, once a subie always a subie and you can't deny that you once owned a subie because that would be like sinning. Instead of all hail the RS or WRX it should be all hail the might Subaru Impreza!

Keith99RS
11-13-2001, 07:13 PM
I think an underlying cause for all this flak is that Subaru made the original RS a limited and special car from 98 - 01, along comes the WRX and suddenly the RS is the base model Impreza, gone is any special feeling. Personally, I wish they had named the new RS something else, or did away with the letters all togther. They could have kept the RS as a performance package below the WRX, with a sport suspension and tweak the NA motor a little to keep true the to the Old School RS. Just my $.02.

I sold my 1998 OBS for my WRX Wagon, but it doesn't make me a sellout.

I also used to have a 1982 DL 4x4 Wagon way back in 1985.

People bitch about the new folks the WRX has attracted and now you're bitching about us "Sell Outs" who traded our GC8's for the WRX.

I think it was someone on VWVortex who said that he has never seen any car give so many people such an inferiority complex.

I just think you're bitter and like to complain.

DigitalRonin
11-13-2001, 07:53 PM
I was SERIOUSLY considering trading my OBS wagon in for a 2002 wrx wagon or sedan.

Then my roomie bought one. Saw it in person. Hated the headlights even more.

Tricking out the 2k OBS now. I'd rather spend the money on something I like EVERYTHING about.

Sure the Morette's are "better" but really, I just don't like the super-euro look of the WRX (VERY personal choice, I know folks who really dig it, although more don't). I'm hoping the rumors of the headlight changes are true. Couple of my friends in europe say that WRX's are'nt selling for crap over there due to the new body style and the fact that the 2.0 engine gets blown away by all the other stuff available overseas (Lancer anyone?). Not sure if I'm really comfortable with seeing all the new WRX's on the road with racing stickers on them either. I guess it just kinda makes the Suby name lose the prestige of being a "specialty" car and it's moving into the "mass" market now.

Time will tell.

One friend traded his RS for a WRX wagon and another swapped his Outback for a WRX wagon. After I drove one on the track, I can't say I blame em.

If either SOA brings in the STi or Mitsu brings the EVO and keep em reasonably priced and don't wussify em for the USA, I'll be in line to buy one of those.

I'll prolly keep the RS tho and make it a track car. It has a salvage title which might make it tough to sell.

The TS wagon is the base Impreza currently. RS is still good. Just not as good as before. ;)

Subaru used to be a niche vehicle, kinda unique, unusual, all wheel drive leader and a car not many knew about. Then they hit it bigtime with the Legacy Outback.Right car, right time.
They were doin there Rallye thing all along and still nobody or very few in the U.S. had heard about the performance side of Subaru. So along comes the RS,kinda street version rallye car take off.Subaru bein the uniquie outfit that they are  doesnt even advertise this car and it gains a very loyal fan base and sells fairly well. Then they figure, hey, we got this wrx thing goin on around the world, why not the U.S.?Those RS guys are fanatics, wait till they get a load of this!So they give us a slightly watered down version and send it here with a marginal body style and all the advertising money can buy.It sells well,,,,,,,at 1st to all the "i gota have one" people then sales seem to slow down some.(i feel sorry fr the dudes who paid list and over).
To put it bluntly, the RS has class and looks the rex will never have. The RS is unique ,(lotus super seven comes to mind)and will always be so.Collectable maybe, but i doubt it.
Anyway thats my take, this aint bashen the wrx, matter a fact theres probably one in my future, hopefully STI,but ill keep the RS no matter what,it's just too fun to drive.

it hink alot of people took this thread WAY too seriosuly...if there is one thing i KNOW the orginal I-Club Family had it is a sense of humor and we are all sarcastic. IT seems that tensions have risen and people have forgotten how to take a joke. I am sure no one in this thread was really bashing anyone or had any harmful feelings.

In the end...JUST RELAX people.

Oh and inferiority complex??? comeon now.....none of that...we don't need a ClubSi.com here

I don't think it's any of that, I just think that the attitude has changed, from the RS being a limited edition car, which really only attracted enthusiasts, creating a base of people who are really friendly and enthusiastic, but also felt "tight knit" because they were driving something quite limited.

The "Classic" 2.5RS is a cult car.

The thing with the WRX is that it is so mainstream, and that's turning the original RS people off a little bit because some of the new crowd don't "behave" the same way as before... and the aftermarket is responding differently to the new car than our car.

As soon as I saw APC lights for the wrx, that pretty much did it for me in terms of thinking of the new WRX as a cult car, and some are upset that it has lost that status.

in another year or so, I expect to be selling out (isn't that a great song, btw, from Reel Big Fish) for either an STi, an RX-8, or (if I can find a good one), a 3rd Gen. RX-7

SanjuNana

The only thing I would "sell out" for would be an STi or an EVO ... but the rx-8s and new Z sure are tempting.

Your taking this ayo seriously.....Do you know someone that sold out or not? I didn't mean 'sell-out' as a derrogitory term in the case of people selling the RS for te WRX. I guess I should have been more clear.

BTW, my friend got the Protege` to make into a show car for his car audio company. Of course he did get a first place finish with the RS at the Import Expo in Houston this year:rolleyes:

personally... i like my MY98... yeah.. i'd like the added 60HP from a turbo... but it isn't like i can't put it in my own car...

i like the styling of my car... course... that's not why i got it in the first place... i got lucky from a car auction... and i don't think i could have gotten a better car than this... my family has been a suby family for a long time... which is why i put the Impreza 2.5RS down as a possibility... it's enough power for me... but not too much... i'm afraid to test drive a WRX for fear of what i might do to it

that being said... i don't think i'll sell my GC8 for a loooooong time... if the tranny goes... i'm just going to swap in a manual (if i can)... and if the engine goes... i'll just try to swap in another... it's unique... and i like that...

that and you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a WRB WRX where i am... but that's fine.. to each his own... i'd like one... but don't have the $$$ to spend on it or insurance... so i'll take the NA road anytime...

My main problem is that the new crowd is full of ricers and mainstream punks. Now - there are a ton of great people coming in too, it's just that a large percentage of them are idiots.

I'm sticking with old school outback until I can afford an old school project car. I have found out I can't deal with not having the outback's cargo space so I can't sell it to buy a GC8. The ideal plan is to have a impreza coupe AND the outback.
I really love the new WRX - the amount of power and stiff chassis is great compared to old school. I still think I'm going to end up with an RS-T eventually though. Hell, maybe even an Outback-T too!

I drive to have fun, not to compete. I don't need to be the fastest car on the planet or the bling blingiest car in the hood.

I kind of miss the old i-club. Bigger is not always better.

hndatch, and remarcable I am in total agreement with the two of you. Everything seemed a little more fun on the board int he past. Don't get me wrong though this is still my favorite site on the web. I just enjoy the enthusist crowd more than the flavor of the month crowd. I bet if we get the RSX-R or the EVO 7 lots of people will disapper and goto the newest hot thing, but hey to each their own. Flossmoor is in the south burbs (BORING!!!) Do you know where the workd theater is? Well I am about 2 miles east of the lawn and live on the road that heads directly out of the back parking lot. Really nice when there is a worth while concet to see. I saw ther was a meet, but unfortunatly work and distance for me on a Thursday do not mix well. If there are Saturday Sunday or Friday meets I would love to try to make one. I am soo lonley in the south burbs. I am the only RS here besides one other. But my car sure sticks out:)

...I feel that this "sell-out" thing has become more of an oppression!

I think a sell-out is one who engages him/herself with someone or something then turns around and does something else. IF you consider someone selling their car for a "better" performance car, then I think it's more of a personal issue instead.

Though, as much as I would love to keep my RS, I eventually will sell it. And before the Rex wagon came out, I was already considering the Audi Avant. But you know what...? I'm not paying $33k for a car that can barely fit my baby seat or a person in the back (behind me). As a matter of fact, the Rex wagon has alittle more legroom in the back than the Avant.

So..I'll be getting a Rex Wagon...and if getting another Subie makes me a sell-out, then so be it!

At least I'm getting another Subie, and not a Mazda! :p

PS- Not that it is anyone's concern, but I'm getting a Rex wagon because I have to think about my near future kids as well. But a good majority of you don't have that type of responsibility yet!

Here's the story,
I was pulling out of the mall in my gc8(its got rims a body kit and the ver6 wing) and a black wrx ends up right behind me. he waves and gets my attention and says," I love your body style!" I replied, " I want your turbo!" We then parted our ways. This to me means that wrx owners have respect for our RS and I have the respect for the wrx. Would I love to have his turbo charged motor. Would he love to have my body style? I'm thinking yeah. Its just that kind of relationship and may I add a good one between the wrx and the RS. We can both be appreciative towards each other for our cars, thats all that matters.

The RS gc8 style is what got us noticed, the WRX will continue it for us. I'm happy with my RS.

i'll have to agree that some times bigger just isn't better. The popularity and people coming to this website and buying wrx's is just outrageous. I understand there's always going to be change but come on, no one deserves the APC tail lights. That's when i first started to notice how "in" the wrx was.

nah i'm don't consider WRX guys who had RS's sell outs...in fact i know one that wants his RS back, that car was his baby and i can tell when he drives mine how much he misses it. Yes the WRX has nicer amentities in certain areas but other areas are lacking. There are VERY cool WRX guys and gals....just now that all the "orders" have been filled there is a stock of cars ont eh lots ready to be sold.

One day everyone of you whiny little kids will "sell out".... guess what?!? No one drives the same car all of their life. Leave the WRX guys alone, if nothing else, the sudden popularity will draw attention to Subaru from the American aftermarket.... remember, the 02 RS and the 98-01 have the same motor..... could be a good thing.

ATX25RS
11-18-2001, 05:55 AM
thats true, but how often do you see the 02RS on the cover of magazines and as project cars? with the rex in the forefront the RS has now taken a back seat. with the loss of body styling the rs has now become a "regular" good deal sedan.
