Drivers side window on my 6 month old WRX started acting weird yesterday, then moved out of alignment and then quit working altogether. Just talked with the service advisor, who said there are broken parts, it will take at least two days to fix, and they might have to order parts, and they may need to have a body shop work on it. Why a body shop? Cause we may not be able to do it. Sheesh!!!

Good thing I wasn't going over Loveland Pass in a blizzard when it happened. The last time I had such a stupid no-brainer mechanism fail was on an 80 Audi (not a paragon of reliability), and at least that was at 60,000 miles.

Can't Subaru make a simple window lift mechanism that holds together? Of course, the dealer says "oh, we have never seen that" but searching the I-club proves otherwise.

Together with intermittent CEL's, I am wondering if I made a mistake. Love the car, but I rationalized the cheap interior and tinniness with the belkief that it would be reliable.

The same thing happened to my boy's WRX. Except his failed after 4 months. And last week his Transmission went and his dealership is refusing to fix it.

Funny thing, I just my Rex in for exactly the same thing... including the body shop bit. Apparently there's some inner structure that is damaged when you pull your non-funtioning window up by it's ears:) (I'm in Seattle and we have had over FOUR inches of rain since my window went down)
My car is almost 8 months old now, so I guess I'm ahead of the game...

It is the only thing on my car to go wrong in 17.5K miles.

superg- Since you had an Audi, Subaru repairs can't scare you. My previous car was a Saab 900 Turbo, so you can't scare me. Ask about Saab X-missions... been there, more than once :eek:

I think that Subaru does make a window lift mechanism that holds together...yours, however, didn't. Those are the breaks of the game, and that's why the car has a warranty. Get it fixed, make them give you a loaner, the end.

Perhaps I would feel differently if it were I, but I don't think that I would. Mechanical bits vary from run to run, from batch to batch. One car can run beautifully forever, while another car of the same make and model is always in the shop. Go figure.

I believe that you'll find that most of the internals of the window mechanism are manufactured by Nissan.

Everyone shares parts. There are some Mitsubishi parts on your car too.

You get what you pay for. Nothing is perfect, not even Lexus, I own IS300 for over a year now and had no problems whatsoever. But I read on the IS forums that other owners have minor problems. But its the fewer number of problems that count and allow them to be #1 on JD Powers and Associates. Subaru is not bad, its just not as good. At least you could feel better knowing you are better off than someone who owns an American car.

Car was fixed in two days. They had the parts. Had to do some welding where one part was bent or broken (never got to see it.) Window runs like new now. Asked sales manager to help get me a courtesy car and got to drive an OBS Friday (automatic though.)

What I learned: next time the window starts acting even slightly weird, go in immediately, don't wait. That way it may be just a matter of tightening bolts instead of replacing regulator, repairing bent parts.

Back to loving my car!
