just curious. I am thinking of putting some 255 RT615's on, but I have 8" wheels. does this tire get somehat sloppy on a 8" wheel?

thanks...

Its not great but it should work fine. Quite a few people put those tires on the stock 05+ STi wheels and I havent seen any complaints.

I've run 265's on a 7.5" wheel, but I'm not sure I'd go anywhere near this on a true street tire. I'd suggest not more than a 245 on a 8" wheel if you're talking about street tires. I'd suggest 255's on a 9" wheel.

I don't think they make RT-615's in 235's (stock width for me).

I'm sorta trying to not spend the extra $ for new wheels... :(

so is it better or worse than a 225? (from a turn-in and cornering perspective)?

225's on an 8 inch are fine that is what come factory on an STI, now if this is for a WRX Azenis has a 235-40-17 that is very nice.

they do make a 235/40/17 615. There is a thread on here about putting the 255s on stock bbs's with reviews and pictures somwhere on this forum. I think nuhlur or however you spell it started it.

Is there a reason you're not considering 245/45's? ... a bunch of us have run 245 615's on 8" rims and had reasonably good performance.

If you're talking about doing it for autox, the extra grip from width makes up for the slightly sloppier turn-in due to the taller sidewall.

I mean, if you're worried a 255 will be too pinched, but want more than 235, then 245's are right there for ya :)

(Evo? ... it's o.k., you can say it ;) )

I've run 255 on 8" Enkeis (17's). Worked no problem. I would prefer to have them on 8.5"'s but didn't have that wide a wheel at the time. I tracked them and they were fine.

255's RT615's on a stock 17x8 wheel were fine. Actually there was no real bulging at all.

Strictly from a performance perspective, would a 245/45 or a 245/40 be better for the 8" rim?

I tracked a set of 255/40-17 Pirelli corsas on 8" wheels with no issues.

The '94/95 Cobras came from the factory with 255s on 17x8" wheels, and I don't believe that's the only OEM case of that fitment.

Strictly from a performance perspective, the 245/40 is going to have a slight gearing advantage over a 245/45, and it's got a shorter sidewall for (theoretically) better turn-in response. 245/40 is also closer to the original 225/45 sidewall, so the ole speedo/odo won't be off as much.

The width of the tire is not enough by itself to determine whether a tire will properly fit on a wheel. The cobra takes 255/45-17's. For example, take the Kumho MX's (for which there are both 255/40-17 and 255/45-17 available). The recommended rim width for the 45-series tires is 8.5" - 9.5", whereas for the 40-series tire it is 9.0" - 10.0".

For the 255/40-17 RT615, the recommended rim width is 8.5" - 10.0". Going a half inch under that is not going to kill you.

And on top of all of that- my buddy has 17x8 Team Dynamics with 255 RT615's on his evo and it works (and looks) just fine. It ought to work on yours too! ;)

they'll lack in response. or so i've heard.

you wouldnt want them for cornering. but they do look good. no doubt. i love the look of beefy tires myself.

I doubt they would be any worse than 245/45/17 615s. I would just go for the 255s Tim, unless you are planing a triumphant return to autox .

245/45/17 are pretty much the same as 255/40/17

Ummmmm, not even close. 225/45/17 is stock STi size and is 25" diamiter. 255/40/17 is also 25" diamiter. 245/40/17 is common to use, and I am gonna get this size in the near future, is 24.7" which is only 0.3" off, not too bad. 245/45/17 is 25.7", which is 0.7" bigger around than a 255/40/17. That is almost 1 inch bigger diamiter. IMO that is wayyyy different than a 255/40/17, and not as good performance wise either (i.e. taller sidewall is easier flexed/rolled over, and more diamiter = less acceleration).

I think he means turn in is about the same on both tires. The 245 has more sidewall but fits the rim better, 255 has less sidewall but is squeezed on the rim.

LOL. it would take more than the perfect tire to be triumphant at autox... (driving skillz upgrade is what I'm getting at here)

It may be moot now, since I just crashed the damn thing (sleeping in a traffic jam on interstate), but lets see. I should have it back in a coupla weeks.

300C is looking better and better now. Maybe a big ol' pig/boat can reduce my obsessive need constantly to push the limits... freaking pocket rockets are just too tempting to drive hard...

I run 255/40's on my volk 17x8 +44. Falken fk451's... I love em. It's not as "bubbled" as people think it's going to be.

I can feel mine roll if I do solom, but then a I have Direzza DZ101 which are a cheap tire only $92. If I had gotten a better tire then this wouldnt have been a a prob.
