Im looking to put 20g with ewg making a little over 300 whp with a moderate tune on my 06 wrx tr and I dont take my wrx to the track just looking for a fast scooby all around and was wondering how the 06 tranny would hold up to the 20g, let me know of any experiences advice thanks

With a little over 300whp, I'd say you'll be fine.

stock clutch?

Nobody makes an aftermarket 2006 clutch yet, so yes stock clutch.

I would baby it, 3rd gear is super weak for 2006, I blew mine with 200whp and 248wtq at about 40 miles an hour.

Running 348/348 with a 20G on a TR. No issues yet and I drive it like I stole it. :)

What's your build date on the car. What I have found is some of the late summer 05 cars have problems, I know of about 3 cars from this "batch" that have blown 3rd.

well that kindof makes sense... I bought mine in march of this year so I imagine it was built around summer of 05. I will have to check mine tomorrow.

you should be fine with the 20g. stock clutch will hold up fine also. I had about 10k miles with 350+whp and no problems.

Maybe they JUST released it, but last I heard they were still in the R&D stages.

We're getting some in stock tomorrow or monday for the 06 cars.

That said, with the added 2.5 torque, you'll REALLY want to consider an upgraded gearset or 6 speed. We've been getting a lot of calls from 06 guys lately that an grenaded their transmissions, most on 20G's or FP Greens. I wouldn't push it or launch too hard if you're planning on cranking up the boost.

Cheers,

Gary

Sounds like one of mine......I blew 3rd with 10K on the odometer and mine was built in 8/05

Someone should find out if this is really true. I just checked my build date and it is February 2006. The tranny is my main fear of even going stage 2:huh:

It's the tall FD that makes these transmisions weaker

a friend of mine in florida's on an fp green setup with the stock tranny...you should be good as long as you dont drive like an idiot. Id save up for a ppg gearset or an sti 6-speed swap and just drive your car easy untill you can get it.

I have a pretty good understanding of transmissions, but I am curious as to why the final drive makes the transmission weaker? Could someone explain? Thanks

The answer is simple: mechanical advantage

The shorter the gearing in the differentials, the less of a strain that's placed on the internal gears in the transmission. The JDM STi models up to the v6 (IIRC) used the Subaru 5spd trans - even though these cars made over 300 crank hp, these trannys would hold up to strain because Subaru employed a 4.44 final drive in the front and rear diffs.

FYI - my '06 WRX has a build date of 7/05. I'm still at stock power levels, but I've done a full season of autoX (over 20 events).

No, 3rd really doesnt go out from driving like an idiot, when i broke mine i was under 4000 rpm and i do not abuse my car what so ever and push my clutch all the way to the ground, its juts the FD combined with the weak gears

On another note i talked to subaru today about seeing if they would warranty it and the rep said that they had not gottyen any reports from early 05 06's having any problems and he said he could see if theyw ould warranty it but its 1000 doillars of labor plus parts if they say its abuse, and i said no thanks if the gear hasent been rivised why would i want to replace it with the gear that broke on me, that doesnt make sence to me. anyways i guess ill just need to save up for PPG's :/

Look on the lower portion of the B-pillar on your driver's side door. There's a silver plate stamped onto the frame.

Bump on this, did anyone ever find out if the build date has anything to do with weaker trannies?

It's very rare that you CAN'T get a clutch. What are the clutch guys saying when you ask? Is the the spline that much different or something?

keaniegenie

Clutches are rare because of switching from pull to push style. ACT's have them out.

The taller FD is weaker on the newer transmissions because of the extra stress on the gears.

A cheap, $1000 upgrade in parts that would improve ratios and strength is upgrade the 1-2 to a legacy GT 1-2, and change the FD to a 3.9 or lower. 4.11 would be the same as the Legacy's. 4.44 will be the strongest, but then your gears would be super short.

Would this mean than that 5th gear is more strained than 4th, 4th is more strained than 3rd, etc?

Also, it seems that all previous trannies broke as a result of abuse... but the '06's are failing just due to simply being too weak?

Agreed, but I still say something is up with 06 3rd gear...

Mne started making noise then grenaded cruising in 3rd, and i'm not alone.

Not sure about my build date, when I go pick up the trans i'll write it down.. It's definitely 2005 though.

Yeah, I've seen a few threads where 3rd gear broke on the '06 5spds. Seems like 1st and 2nd are strong though - luckily, those are the two gears I use during my autoX's.
