View Full Version : OMG! Did my Kartboy shifter break my WRX!?!
Bernie 11-18-2001, 01:27 AM I was following the directions on the installation. I was at the part where you're supposed to knock the ball at the end of the shifter into place into the white plastic "socket" (known as Bushing B in the service manual). I placed a piece of wood on top and hit it with a rubber mallet. The first few times it wouldn't go in, so I kept increase the strength that I whacked it with. Finally, I heard a snap and it went in. But, then I looked and it seemed like the white plastic socket got cracked in 4 places (the green lines in the smaller picture below). The pictures are the ones from the install... not of my actual shifter and socket.

Now, it didn't look like the cracks were there when I took out the stock shifter. So, I wonder if smacking the shifter into the socket cracked it? But, after looking at the service manual, it looks like the socket may already have those cracks in it from the factory and maybe I just didn't notice them because they were filled in with grease... it looks like in the picture on the left there may be a crack in the upper left part of the plastic that is filled with grease (again, not my actual shifter, picture is taken from install tech). Also, the socket seems to be evenly split into quarters by the 4 cracks, so that leads me to think that they're supposed to be there. Somebody put my mind at ease, please!!!
bsquare 11-18-2001, 01:28 AM You didn't break anything, those notches let the cup expand to accept the shifter ball. You didn't see them before because the shifter was out when you really looked.

Peaty 11-18-2001, 11:41 AM Nice pics they look familiar :)

Ben is right, the socket has splits in it to expand except the ball. Nothing to worry about. Someone once said that a shifter with a plastic ball was better than the KB one with the metal ball because the plastic ball would deform and fit in the socket easier. I tried to explain that the socket had those slots to move rather than the ball deforming, so the ball material is really academic there.

Bernie 11-18-2001, 03:24 PM Excellent, good to hear! Thanks a lot, guys! (Thanks for the writeup, Peaty... was a piece o'cake).
bsquare 11-18-2001, 03:37 PM Also, if the ball deformed _that_ much, you'd feel it while shifting, which you really don't.
GOT_WRX 11-18-2001, 07:18 PM Lol, it's the exact same image as:
http://www.scoobymods.com/mods/wrx/images/10_plateremoval.jpg
except he edited it using photoshop to get rid of the red arrows.
and chew up a bit of the carpet to make it look like diff? heh
Anyway I think you shouldn't do that. If you used a pic, mention you got it from scoobymods.com. It violates copyright issues!
GOT_WRX 11-18-2001, 07:20 PM And he also made more holes on the braket.:lol::lol::lol:
nice try.
bsquare 11-18-2001, 07:37 PM He said it was from the install page, not his own. Cut the guy some slack, jeez.
Peaty 11-18-2001, 07:40 PM Lets play nice. I was just busting chops. I really don't mind people using my pics. It was for a good cause. It is nice to get credit . After all it's not like we at Scoobymods are getting any money for what we do. In fact it takes a lot of our free time. It's for the love of car stuff and and all the glory associated with it :D

Honestly, you really should pay more attention to your car when you're doing mods. Missing details when you are dismantling your car will lead to lost parts. There's nothing more frustrating than "extra" parts after you've put a car back together. The grooves in the cup can be obscured bygrease so I can give you some credit. But be more observant in the future. Thanks for making me laugh my ass off though.

LOL. I wasn't "trying" to steal pictures or anything. I actually made it smaller to decrease the size of the file... not to try and hide the fact it wasn't mine... also quickly brushed out the arrows so that people didn't looking at the arrows instead of bushing "B". Besides, as several people pointed out, I said it was from the install in my post.
