View Full Version : 2006 bushings compared to previous years

Now I know why there's a bajillion threads on "clunking"... because there seem to be a bajillion places where it happens during shifting. Ok, there's one thing I want to know though... between the 2006 WRX (which I have) compared to the previous years, which transmission related bushings are different (stiffer?)

I read a few places where people think the steering is tighter on the 2006, which reduces the need for steering rack bushing upgrades.

I've read dozens and dozens of clunk threads and I'm comfused which one (or ones) I'm feeling.

There's something I don't like about a softness when accelerating/engagement. Here's my description: on any kind of acceleration that's not "gentle", it feels like the transmission is winding up on rubber bushings, then when the bushing is fully complied power gets applied to the wheels. Then when lifting the throttle to clutch/shift, I feel the tranny snap back to neutral resting place; jolting the car with an intensity proportional to how quickly I lifted. This also seems to make rev match downshifts tougher.

Which bushings are responsible for this? Or all of them?

The two major culprits I see from my reading are the tranny mount and the rear diff mount. I'm guessing the GroupN tranny mount would help me without making family unfriendly NVH?

I just did the Group-N motor and tranny mounts in my '06. They greatly reduced that lurching feel of the drive train that you are describing when going on/off throttle. I would definitely recommend these.

Next up will be the unabomber's sexy rear end package from TIC.

how was the install of motor and tranny mount? thinking of doing those

The tranny mount was easy, maybe 40 min start to finish.

The motor mounts though were pretty tough, mainly the passenger side. I ended up taping a flex head wrench to a long screw driver to get one of the bolts started.

How was the added NVH with the two parts?

The NVH increase was noticeable at first, but not in a bad way, I kinda like it. I have about 1500 miles on them now and they seemed to have broken in a bit.

^^ same here. Between the Sexy RearEnd package, tranny mounts, tranny crossmember bushings, and some shifter bushings....the feel in my car is great now.

The Koni inserts with JDM pink springs helped the feel too :D That is not really relevant to the above tho.

^I read the same thing. I dont know if its true, but I guess if they were designed to work as a set, it makes sense.

I figured I wanted to do them all eventually so might as well, do them all at once.

just installed group N tranny mount today for my 06 wrx. I can just say WOW.
I feel like i am getting like 20+ hp on the floor. I really love it big time.
Shifting is also like 1000x better now real solid and direct.
This mod is the best drivetrain mod so far.

I have kartboy ss, front + rear bushing, Tic rear diff bushing.
