View Full Version : CAI in winter......
sc00ter 12-09-2006, 09:29 AM Wondering if anyone is having a similar problem:
- 05 RS with Injen CAI as only current injen mod.
The temps here in Michigan just dropped to about 10 - 20 degrees. My CAI ran fine all spring/summer giving me full throttle response from 1k - 6.1k rpm (both at WOT and slight open throttle) . Now with the extremely low temps from 1.5k - 2k rpms (in all gears) It seems my car has no pickup. Almost to the point it feels it might stall. Once I hit 2k the response comes right back.
Obviously these are low rpm's so when I need to get on it it's not a problem but for normal daily driving I like to keep the rpm's low.
I'm sure I am answering my own question here but is this problem most likely because I am running to lean with the CAI? Or is this just typical for these low temps (I doubt this because I don't remember my car doing this last winter w/o the CAI)?
edit: If it is that I am running to lean, would shortening the intake to a short ram help this/make no difference/make it worse?
Any feedback will be helpful, thanks.
- Kevin
sc00ter 12-09-2006, 05:09 PM You've got to be kidding....No one has experienced this or know's what the problem could be?
mofugga 12-09-2006, 06:39 PM i'd bet anything it's something other than the CAI cause CAI's should love the cold weather & shouldn't hinder performance. i have no idea what else it could be just thought i'd throw that out there
piker28 12-09-2006, 08:02 PM nah my car is acting up to and ive seen it in friends as well, its just the new cold and winter gas
SiFuSpEc 12-09-2006, 09:01 PM try reseting the ecu and have it learn these cold conditions and the fuel
sc00ter 12-09-2006, 09:46 PM PROBLEM DISCOVERED!!!! - Hopefully no one else has this predicament, but it turns out that the the throttle response issue that I mentioned in my post above was followed a couple hours later by a CEL and a blinking "cruise" light. I was baffles, so I took it to a mechanic who knows suby's. As soon as he saw the Check engine and blinking cruise lights he said it was because I was low on "manual transmission oil". He told me I should have felt a glitch in the power when I hit the gas. This made me laugh as he was exactly right. He checked the oil level and sure enough it was insanely low. I'm taking it to the dealer Monday to have it refilled under waranty. It sounds like my problem will be fixed at that point. I will update.
- Everyone check their "manual transmission oil". The mechanic said a few guys have come in with the same problem on their WRX's and other RS's. I only have 20k on my engine and the oil level was extremely low.
SiFuSpEc 12-09-2006, 09:54 PM manual transmission fluid?
insanely low??
that's not good, i wouldn't drive that car unless you were going straight to the dealership

Exactly what I am doing Monday morning.
dstan 12-09-2006, 10:46 PM The main question is where did it go!
I had a 03 wrx wagon that the
dip stick would vibrate out and pour
onto the turbo.the smoke gave it away
fixed it by bending the springs on the stick

you can put it in yourself buy a funnel and why couldn't the mechanic
put some in??

It was at his house, he didn't have any. Tell me where to buy it and I will do it myself. Otherwise I would just assume taking it to the dealership under warranty and save myself the money.
Kostamojen 12-09-2006, 11:14 PM You have never checked the transmission fluid on your 05?
And unless you have some sort of SAS plan, transmission oil is not covered under warranty.

There's some good news.
dstan 12-09-2006, 11:25 PM Any auto parts store has it
even Advance Auto has it but they will
give you the wrong stuff.
look in your manual and get
what it says i forget what i
got but found it in the manual
Hawk296 12-09-2006, 11:28 PM The only time ive had that happen in cold MI winters was last season when my MAF encountered a wad of snow that was sucked up after the body shop put the air box lid on wrong.
Flashing CEL and cruise, misfire and a maf code.
as to how your car knows the MT gear lube is low is beyond me as there are no sensors for that kind of thing. But if its empty, buy a funnel and some gear oil and put it in now.

- Yeah my dad said he didn't know how the car would know that (of course you always listen to dad). Now I am skeptic of what to think. Like I said before, I will see if the dealer can tell me anything.
dstan 12-10-2006, 12:03 AM probably from a sensor in the transmission
no just go get the fluid the manual calls for. it is very easy,
it will not take alot so put a little in at a time

Dave
thats what I would say if it actually had one
dstan 12-10-2006, 12:18 AM there is a sensor that monitors something
somewhere on the car that throws that code
and apparently it is correct. maybe it is
Magic ;)

I absolutely agree. I think you nailed this one!
dstan 12-10-2006, 12:31 AM well Subaru's are Magic on the road
like todays run.
never any fear of loosing it, wow great
run 125 miles we did it in 3 hours up
and down the WNC mountains

The speedometer gear has a gasket that can leak, but thats pretty rare. Both the front and rear seals can leak. So can the drain plug too of course.

this guy's pretty smart:lol:
boarderguy 12-10-2006, 03:12 AM i know i have always loved driving my previous cars with cai's in the coldest conditions they always have more power:)

Yes, those are places fluid can leak out of, but how do those detect a low fluid level? they dont.

Could it be an increase in heat from the lack of fluid which could trip a sensor? I don't know throwing something out there. Maybe the car can some how recognize how the car behaves when it's low on oil.
