View Full Version : Help me with my 91 Legacy
Seahawk 12-10-2006, 09:25 AM Ok.. I recently bought a 91 legacy FWD Wagon, non-turbo EJ22, manual trans (for $200) to replace my Pathfinder when I sell it. For $200, the car needs a little work:
I need to replace the:
Timing belt/water pump
Heater core (currently bypassed because it leaks)
However, I need to get this gem running in good condition first. I checked the codes, then reset the ECM and let it idle for about 15 minutes and waited for the codes to return. Here's what I got:
11-crank angle sensor/circuit
17-Fuel injector #4 circuit
22-Knock sensor
23-Airflow sensor
33-Vehicle speed sensor
35-Purge control solenoid valve
I tested the crank position sensor and it doesn't give enough resistance, so I ordered one and I am going to replace it today and see what happens.
Any other thoughts? Bad ground somewhere? Bad ECM?
americanyouth 12-10-2006, 11:48 AM How did you check to codes? I just bought a 91 Legacy myself for $250 (except mine is AWD :p). I tried the old connect the green diag connectors and count the flashing CEL trick but I didn't get any valid codes. I even tried hooking it up to a OBD-I scanner from the dealer and that didn't pull any codes either. Sorry for the slight hijack... it would seem to me all your CELs result from a poor ground somewhere.
Seahawk 12-10-2006, 01:08 PM connect the black connectors and not the green ones. your's turbo?
americanyouth 12-10-2006, 09:56 PM Nah, sadly it's NA. Thanks for the heads up on the black connectors, I'll give it a shot.
Legacy777 12-11-2006, 01:54 PM I've got more detailed info on my page on how to pull the codes & what the codes are
www.surrealmirage.com/subaru/engine.html
As for the codes, I'd test all the sensors and see if they're within spec. If not, I'd replace them, if they are, I'd check the wiring, and if that's good....yeah look at trying another ECU.
If you don't have info on the sensors, check out the stuff you need to know forum on www.bbs.legacycentral.org

if there is one thing that i have learned on my legacy its that there are a few sensors that will trigger a couple of sensors just by itself. and i see a golden bullet on yours, the vehicle speed sensor will through codes for no reason. which i know is the result of the airflow sensor. i work at a subie shop so if you have any questions let me know.
Seahawk 12-11-2006, 06:31 PM So are you saying my MAF is bad? or the VSS? the guy I bought it from said the cruise control did not work, I haven't even tried it because the car isn't registered and I can't legally drive it yet. BUT, I would think the VSS would need to be working for the CC to work.
I spent the afternoon under the hood: I cleaned up all the old grounding points and also added a DIY grounding kit. I have read how they have helped on other's cars, and I did one on my old accord a few years back. The car runs a tad smoother now, but I am still not so familiar with the car because I haven't driven it much since I got it two weeks ago.
After working on the grounds, I reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery and stepping on the brake pedal for a minute or so. I started it up, and the CEL immediately came back on. I haven't checked the codes yet because it's dark out now, but I will check them tommorrow.
I guess next I will check all the pins at the ECU that are grounds, and each sensor individally. The car seems to run ok, but it sounds like a diesel almost, which I know is normal because of the flat four style. It's my first subaru, so I don't have much to compare this thing to.
I am also going to get working on the home made scan tool, I just have to source the stereo connector. Hopefully that will let me see if the sensors are registering correctly or not.
In my experience, if the crank sensor, fuel injector, or MAF was not working, the car would not run. So why is mine still running ok?
Legacy777 12-12-2006, 01:49 PM Have you driven the car? Does the speedo work at all? If so, the VSS should be alright. Plus, if you cleared the codes, the VSS shouldn't pop back up until the car has been driven. The exception could be if the electronic portion of the VSS is toasted.
Normally if the MAF sensor is bad, the car usually won't run.
Have you tried unplugging certain sensors, and see if the car runs any worse? Like unplugging individual injectors. Try starting the car with the MAF unplugged.
Also, do check the codes, and try the clearing procedure on my site where you connect both the green & black connectors.
subielicious02 01-09-2007, 03:19 PM my car ran without a maf sensor. and my vehical speed senser is bad but my speedo still works but sometimes it jumps around. i have been working on subarus for a very long time and i have experienced the speed sensor many times on legacys, especially mine.
