Spy Shots: BMW 135ti

http://germancarscene.com/2006/12/11/bmw-135ti-spotted/

Here’s a few more pictures of BMW’s R32 fighter - the 135ti. Using the same 306 bhp 3L twin turbo unit as the 335i, it look like it’s going to be alot of fun

 Maybe it's that, but I have seen pics of other 1-series cars and the look and proportions of the headlights versus the grill just kills it for me. Which is a shame, cuz those ultra-short overhangs plus the rest of the body is sweet.

Oh well - I don't think it matters really, since I have big doubts that this car ever comes to the US. BMW already has the Mini when it comes to the small car market.

For some reason I'm seeing Golf in the back end.

To whoever said the comment about the pedestrian friendly noses...I couldn't agree with you more. I'm getting sick of the tall car fad. That's why I have my fingers crossed I can get into something WRX related before the new restyle comes out. I'm not holding my breath.

The M1 would be fun, but when's the last time BMW produced a value package car?

EDIT: Waitaminute...they couldn't even call it the M1. They already produced the M1...their first (and only IMO) true sports car.

Q - They make a non-hatched 1 Series? Or is this a future model?

 Maybe it's that, but I have seen pics of other 1-series cars and the look and proportions of the headlights versus the grill just kills it for me. Which is a shame, cuz those ultra-short overhangs plus the rest of the body is sweet.

Oh well - I don't think it matters really, since I have big doubts that this car ever comes to the US. BMW already has the Mini when it comes to the small car market.

I agree, the 1 has some very interesting, if not beautiful, contours on the side and in the back. Much like the Z4, only to a lesser extent.

But the face just kills it. Something about the proportion makes the kidney grill look like a pig snout. The face destroys an otherwise interesting design. Also kinna like the Z4, but to a greater extent.

But I don't think it will conflict with the MINI in the US. The MINI is a euro B-segment car that is priced around $25K for a moderately optioned S version. (Unless you go option banzai) A level up is a 328i, (which I'm sure will become 330i in a couple years with no price increase) which STARTS at $32K and with sports pack and Xenon already pushes 35K. So I would say that BMW has a slot empty at around $30K for a decently equipped 130i, a euro C-segment car, and $35K for a 135i.

Now I don't know if BMW can actually deliver the 1 at those prices, since some say that production cost of the 1 is in fact not that far below that of the 3. But if they can, seeing that the STI costs $32K already, a $35K twin turbo 3.0 I6 RWD compact with a BMW roundel is really not a bad deal.

And how much higher are the production costs of the 5 series and 7 series? I would imagine these products would make up for lost profits down the ladder.

BMW 1-series is coming. For real this time. Just don't ask when.

For those of us looking for the spiritual successor to the BMW 2002, we've been waiting patiently as the folks across the Atlantic were able to walk into their local BMW dealer and order up a 130i. BMW's excuses for not importing the 1-series to North America centered on the weak dollar and a supposed lack of interest in hatchbacks (MINI anyone?), but we've been told that's about to change.

Way back in January of this year, BMW's CEO, Tom Purves, was quoted by Automotive News as saying that the 1-series, "is absolutely coming" and up until now, that's the last we've heard.

Now, in another interview with AutoNews, Norbert Reithofer, BMW's newest CEO, says, "We will definitely bring the 1-series to the United States, but it will not be a hatchback." Instead, we should expect a coupe, sedan and station wagon (although we're not quite sure how that's different from the image above) in the future.

We're not ready to hold our breath, but it's nice to know that the possibility is still on the table.

As far as I know, there aren't any 1 series coupes, sedans, or wagons around at the moment... but I do recall the previous 1 (maybe 2 series) was available in Europe in a sedan and coupe. It was basically a dopey looking e46 era compact. I can't seem to find any pictures online, though. I walked by one daily when I was in England.

Yes I think there is only the 1 series 5 door. I think it is strange because we have seen them testing convertibles and 3 doors for a while now.
The car you saw in England is the 3 series compact. The US got the E36 version but not the successor. It was just the 3 door.

Yeah, the BMW compact. basically a 3 series with the rear chopped off and the previous series' rear suspension. No real performance models and built down to a price to sell to badge snobs who couldn't finance a full size 3. Garbage, really.

At least that would explain BMW's reluctance to sell these in the US. Not much profit while potentially upsetting the badge snobs who can't stand to be in the same dealership as "normies" like me looking at the 1.

Yes, that's it. I couldn't remember if it went under the 3 or another number. I could remember the headlights as clear as day, though.

I think the US market would latch onto the 1 series. The 3 really is a pretty sizable car. The interior is loads bigger than a Legacy GT. The 1 series would be great for those wanting a RWD Impreza sized car with all the things that make BMWs such nice drivers' cars. I have a MINI and it is just a hair too small for me. Right now, VW and Audi offer the only smaller cars with really nice interiors (GTI and A3).

I don't remember any glowing reviews for any of the 1 series. Most of the complaints were due to its small size and crazy prices, so I'm having trouble believing that it would sell well in the US. I've yet to see a review that claimed the problem with the 130i was a lack of power.

In the UK the 1 is priced very close to the 3, especially when you option it with the M sport pack. I think this has been the source of much criticism, but even then the sales has been pretty good as far as I can gather.

For the 1 to be successfully in the US, I think it needs to be priced at least $4~5K below the 3, engine for engine. And it probably needs to be a coupe or a sedan, even though I would much prefer a hatch. And of course they need to do something about that gawd aweful face.

The 1 has sold in 5-door livery for all this time because they sell like hotcakes in Europe. We are getting closer to one for us, but BMW in thier wisdom will bring it over in a 2002 style two-door sedan only. This will make it possible to label a perf model as the M2. They will never call a perf 1-series an M1 because of the legendary supercar's historic nature as the original M.

I'm with you quentin.. I actually stopped myself from responding to that earlier for fear of starting a flame war... and because I remembered that BMW is back to using the good (rear biased) AWD system from the e30 325iX. As long as it's an option I wouldn't care.

Honestly though, as much as I like the look of the 1 series and love small cars, I'd pass on it in favor of a used 3 series or a perfectly restored 2002tii any day. It's just too heavy.

Yeah, but not everyone wants to/can afford to use a 10~30 year old BMW as a daily driver, regardless of how well it drives.

I think it's a good point that this thing will not be weighing in under 3000lbs. My guess is that it will be maybe 200lbs lighter than a similarly equipped 3, which is already pretty heavy. But then again, what alternative is significantly lighter these days?

Yeah, but not everyone wants to/can afford to use a 10~30 year old BMW as a daily driver, regardless of how well it drives.I can assure you that a professionally restored 30 year old 2002 is going to be cheaper and much more reliable to daily drive than a twin turbo new-age BMW... and you could even drive the 2002tii hard on the street without risking loss of your license.

Just got back from Mexico and was amazed at how many nice cars are not available in the U.S., including the BMW 1 series. If BMW brings the 1 series it would be wise to have the price point under the 3 series, closer to its VW competition.

I hope the US version doesn't look like that.
