Whats up RMIC:

I'm headed out to Utah (Alta/Snowbird etc.) in a few weeks with a fairly big group of friends.

What are the towns/city like with respect to drinking? I've heard a lot of 2nd hand info, like you have to "belong" to a bar to go, can't buy beer/liq. etc.

Its not a big deal to us, as we're all there for the snow, but with a group as big as ours, it would be nice to know what exactly to expect out there.

Thanks a lot

John

Go to the Bayou (State Street and 600ish south), and buy a temp membership. Best food and beer/alcohol selection in one place hands down! No reservations though, so be prepared to wait a little bit for a table.

If you want to just drink in your hotel room, just visit one of the State Liquor Stores about town.

The way it works in Ut. is this. Bars will serve beers all day night long until 2am. Clubs will serve you Drinks and beers. You have a cover charge called a memebership..I.E. you get a temporary one, and sponsor your friends in. In the grocery stores you can buy beer.*note all the beer sold in bars and stores is 3.2% by volume* All Beer sold in Liquor stores is 5. or 6.% like well back home. When you get into town pick up a Salt Lake City Weekly and see what bands are playing where in SLC or what events are going on.
Now are you staying up at Alta or Snowbird? If so you will be 15 to 20 mins out from SLC main. But if you are staying in the vally you will be close to all the activities and going's on.
Shameless plug for my ski shop which is on the way to Brighton,Solitude,Alta,Snowbird. Stop in if you need any rentals, or other gear. Also check with your travel agent on getting a 1 pass which is transfurable to all 4 resorts. Or check with SLC tourisim. The sell them and so do most hotels. I belive you save some bucks if you buy in advance. Not sure though.

I think it's last call is 1 am and most bars close at 2 am. Also, even though the beer seems weak, if you guys are from a lower altitude, the alcohol will effect you more up here. Also, your body needs alot more fluids up here because of the altitude and low humidity, so drink lots of water while you are enjoying yourselves out here. Most temp memberships are like 4 dollars as well, so it's no big deal especially if you plan on going to the bar more than one night. I'm not sure what kind of bars you are looking for, but Green Street (610 Trolley Sq) is a good clean bar with quite a few people and Port O' Call (400 S West Temple) is popular with the 25-40 crowd. If you like dives with awesome rubens, stop by my personal favorite Murphy's (160 S Main St) it's a pretty small bar, but the staff is cool and it's rarely crowded (st patty's day is another story). If you guys like music and some times comedy, check out Monk's house of Jazz (19 E 200 S) which is a stones throw away from Murphy's.

We're splitting a condo outside of Alta. I'll definately use your shop (we have a couple girls renting IIRC)

Thanks for all the tips, I think that pass is a "Superpass" or something to that effect. We'll be using them I think.

Random question: Can you get chains from the rental car places, or do I have to get a 4wd for the week?

Thanks again,

We'll be at your shop the week of the 8th.

Get the 4x4's you will not regret it. When we get storms up the canyons it is 4x4's and sometimes Chains required. Otherwise you might not make it back up to your condo. Cool, look forward to helping you guys out. Remember to click on the discount at the bottom of the main page. ;)

Also on the liquor thing, you can buy liquor no problem you just have to go to a state run liquor store and deal with cartel pricing. I'd just check the weather forcast for the week you plan on being here to aid in your decision on Fwd vs 4x4 but if your up at alta, you might consider the 4x4. Snow removal is pretty good though up there

here's the straight dope on the liquor laws as well

Another good place to go is The Canyon Inn, just before the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. Off Wasatch Blvd. next to the 7-11. They usually have a live band and a couple of pool tables. And next to that is the Porcupine Grill. Good grub and vibe.
No matter what, you'll want to stop off at the State liqour store and load up before you go up the canyon. There's one on 9000 South (or as we say here, 90th south) and just east of the I-15 fwy. 90th south takes you straight up to Alta.

ah yes the bar scene....canyon inn is ok.

Port O' Call is a good bar
Green St. but only on Thursday, $2 Corona
Bayou is always a chill place, not a club bar scene, but more relaxed
Hogs Wallow if you can find it since its close to where you are and near the Canyon inn Bar
The Hotel if you (oontz, ooontz, ooontz)
And that should suffice

Drinking.... Utah????? I can think of many problems with the title.

Some places actually arent bad. You should head up to park city, thats where the fun is.
