I found a quarter size white skuff mark on my rear bumper today. Some has gone all the way through the paint. It's a lost cause, but I'm sure it will look better if I can get all the white out so it looks more like a uniform skuff.
What are you guys using, rubbing compound for these types of things?

I wouldn't recommend the compound because it'll leave a weird hazy mark, its really made to be used before buffing and could take off the clear coat surrounding the spot. You should use regular wax, not gloss or carnuba, such as Turtle wax (I like the paste). Just use a cotton or terricloth towel and rub it in pretty hard. If it doesn't work then its probably too deep to fix and touchup paint is in order.

Remove the white scuff or transfer paint with fine sand paper (1000 wet/ dry automotive) or Meguirs Scratch X .Fill in the buff/scratch with matching paint slightly higher than the surrounding paint. Let dry. Get some 1000 grit wet/dry automotive sand paper and use a tiny sanding block (I have a piece of hard rubber 1/2 by 1/2 by 2 inches.) Wet the paper and carefully sand the touch up paint to a level of the surrounding paint. BE CAREFUL NOT TO sand the surrounding paint very much or at all. Now, you can take either Meguirs cleaner wax or Scratch X and take out the sand paper scratches. Wax and your done. I use this series of steps on all chips and deep scratches, WORKS LIKE A CHARM!

The least painful way to make the offending area look better is to start with a clay bar...
Clay the area. For stubborn areas use a compound. Then a good glaze and then a polish. Cover with a good wax and or paint protectant.
3M makes clear coat safe products if you are unsure about what to use and they work well... They can be found in any good auto parts store, or a auto body shop supply house. They even come in small bottles...

Zymol (the baby blue bottle) Haze, scratch remover. Easy on finish too.
It obviously only works on light scuffs/scratches. Nothing works magic on damaged paint.

The absolute best stuff you could ever buy for surface scratches is Safe Cut. It is made by The Wax Shop. Seriously, forget everything else you've read and buy a bottle of this stuff. I use it ALL THE TIME. It is a miracle in a bottle. The link is below.
