Well anyways, im drivin home yesterday, and my car is driving like crap.

Im bitchin and moaning that it must be some COBB virus thats set to go off now that the V2 APs are out.

Get about 3 minutes from my house and realize that i had left my hvac set to upper vent / defroster.

Felt like kicking myself in my own nuts for stupidity.

Turn the dial back to normal vent, a/c turns off, car goes back to normal.

All is well again and the car drives like normal.

Moral of story: I had a brain fart last night and my car ran like crap because of it.

  I get that sometimes... You know something is off, but can't quite put your finger on what the heck it is that is slowing things down.... Then at the end of the trip, you get there all irritated, then look down the console and see the culprit...

Wow, my AC never makes my car run like crap. I can barely feel that its on. Weird.

Its pretty obvious to me when its on since i have an aftermarket exhaust manifold on the car, which already takes away from what little low end grunt there is.. so with the ac running, its even more aparent. Back when i had the stock manifold on there, i could not notice the difference much

Yea, well i guess i just know too well how my car should feel when its running "normal" and can tell as soon as something feels wrong with it. I know i make it sound like a big deal, and at the time it really felt like something was wrong with the cars tuning. I dont know if others in the same situation would be as confused as i was, or if they wouldnt notice it at all. I know far too many people that are so oblivious to something being wrong with their cars it makes me sad.

So, cobb created a "timed tune virus" for the AP1 when it made it in 04 for your car and set it to go off when the AP2's finally hit the shelves over a month after they were supposed to???

Or did they remotely zap your AP1 when you weren't looking?

AC cuts out when TPS reads 100% (WOT)...so it shouldnt affect anything if you really get on it?

During normal driving conditions having the ac on does make a noticeable difference especially when starting from a stop on an incline.

Do you always run around at WOT? If not then the A/C unit running will effect the response of the car and overall power output, not to mention MPG.

Yea, i dont exactly "get on it" when im driving home from my parents house down public roads posted 40mph or less, while in traffic. It was a normal drive home, driving like a regular person, with my dog in the backseat, and the entire time of about 20 minutes or so, i just kept thinking something was wrong with my car until i saw the dial was pointed one notch right of vertical where i normally keep it set to.

I know that the A/C declutches or whatever when you get on it hard, but i had no opportunity to really punch the gas on the drive home. And even in that case, the car would STILL drive like total crap from a redlight until you are hitting boost anyways when the engine is under load.

DISCLAIMER: I in no way am saying the AP is a bad product, to be honest, my ride home almost felt like the car was running a stock map compared to the very well tuned OTS Stage 2 map provided with the AP. I know they didn't put a "virus" on the unit to self destruct when teh AP 2 came out, and if you really believe that i was serious, i think you need a few weeks away from the forums to rest your brain.

true.. if your definition of getting on it is going WOT.... to some, 80% throttle is enough of a "getting on it"... and within that range, the car still feels like there is an anchor dragging behind..

imo, 80% TPS isnt "getting on it"

i met a kid @ NED who thought he didnt need to mat the pedal to the floor to make the car go as fast as it was capable of. he was running mid 14's in his STi. my buddy proceeded to drive his car ONCE (never having driven an STi before), and ran a 13.5.

the boost maps are tailored so you only hit max boost in the 91% / 100% TPS columns. under than, and you're definately not getting your peak. my map's are set so @ ~80% TPS, my target is 12psi, whereas my target in hte 91%/100% columns is 18psi. BIG difference. if i want to "get on it", its getting matted.

and i dunno about you guys....the AC just doesnt slow my car down that much. noticable? yes....but total dog? not in the least.

(and technically, i think the AC cuts out @ 90%, so it doesnt have to be completely matted)

Yeah, I can always tell when my AC or defroster is on...it does feel like theres an anchor dragging behind!

Although I am a bit crazy about my car...OCD

I never turn on my AC. San Diego weather FTW. I actually plan on yanking it completely within the next year.

Uh...is the AC turning off thing pre-06? Because when I go WOT with my 06 WRX, the AC doesn't turn off.

No, it doesnt turn off, the mechanical connection at the engine "disconnects" so that there is no parasitic draw on the system. The little light never goes off, and you will never tell a difference in temperature from the vents because the air system is already charged and cooling the air passing thru.

To me, and for the power my car is making, going 80% throttle is definitely "gettin on it". Going WOT without being on a highway in my car is well just.... asking for it.. But again.. my car makes well over 300whp. I rarely ever need to be at anything more than 80% to get whatever i need done well.. done... But while in and out of boost, i can definitely feel the effects of the defroster or the ac being on... I am sure that at WOT it will go off, but short of the freeway, the places where I personally have enough space to go WOT are few and far between.:)

speaking only for myself, my ac compressor DOES NOT DISENGAGE at wot.

i proved this to myself by driving around at WOT in low gears and low rpms while left foot braking with the AC on, and monitoring the vent discharge temps.

actually, i lied: mattr762's doesn't disengage either:

I love my AC I always forget that it is on, then I can always say...

"I had the AC on too" LOL

Really though I can't tell with mine.

I used to tell my wife...

2003 subaru stage 2...
Honey I need a bigger turbo if we are going to have the AC on all the time
2003 Subaru VF-34
Honey I really need an STI if we are going to keep the AC on all the time
2005 STI
Honey, c'mon I need an exhaust and protune if we are going to have the AC on all the time.
2005 Protuned Stage 2
Honey I really am going to need a 20G /FMIC if we are going to have the AC on all the time...
2005 Stage 4 STI (in progress)

I already have the next line ready...

Ultimately I really think you need a GT35R external WG, Meth injection and a 50 shot on a 2.8ltr block to truly overcome AC.
