View Full Version : Close vent plates for winter?
Sort of related to my other post, but thought I'd post the question here, in case anyone else was interested..
For those who have already gone through a winter or two in their RS', (if they were open in the first place) did you block off your vents and scoop, or leave 'em open? I really prefer them open for that extra little sound, but don't want to run into problems with an inch of ice in my engine compartment....
Looking forward to snow on the roads... Thinking of buying my car one of those "my first christmas" ornaments and hanging it from the rear view

JGard 11-21-2001, 01:12 PM I left mine open all winter. no problems.
when leaving the car outside during a snow storm, you will be a little snow build-up on half or your battery, and you may see some on the abs controller... but it tends to not do anything to the way the car runs.
of course, if the ABS controller does actually freeze, it will act funky until the compartment warms up, and it thaws.
as for the battery, you'll see that one terminal is already covered, and it happens to be the one under the vent...and both terminals are raised or the battery, along with the bar across the middle...so it would be very tough for snow to short out the battery.
as I said, I had them open all winter, and didn't have any problems... and I left my car outside a lot.
Yeah, I wasn't too worried, but I thought I'd throw it out there...
I just came off a 24K km road trip with at least 4 or 5 days of 10 or 12 hours of driving through driving rain (with open scoop and vents), and that never affected the car one bit.
My only worry was coming out in one of those foot of snow days and finding half of that foot on the battery.. Oh well, I guess time will tell :)
GooseMan 11-21-2001, 02:15 PM I have a Rallispec Intake that requires the pass. side vent to be open, to allow air into the filter, which sits right under the vent. Well, my vent wasnt COMPLETELY open, it had spacers, which let air into the area, but kept (most) other crap out. But I closed it up for winter.....Montreal winters can be pretty harsh, and I dont want a snowy-dirty clogged filter on my hands!
I dont see a reason to keep your vents off for no reason...I dont think that much sound comes out from there anyway, especially if youre inside the car..the sound will travel thru the firewall. You'll just end up with a dirty, salty engine in the spring :(
HoratioCaine 11-21-2001, 02:22 PM I leave my driver's side closed all the time. Nothing like a big gold terminal to tell crooks that there's something going on in there.
Passenger's side stays open. I usually park in the garage at night, and when I'm at school it goes in the parking garage there... I wouldn't worry about it.
2.52G 11-21-2001, 06:49 PM I close all my vents at the first sign of rain or snow, I have a 99' with an intake and I don't plan on blowing another MAS :(
doobie 11-22-2001, 11:20 AM Probably a good idea to keep after the engine compartment with some simple green every few weeks or at least after the salt the roads. Other than that there should be no problems.
COwannago 11-22-2001, 05:20 PM I leave mine open all the time and I worried about shorting, but I've been in some pretty fierce rainstorms up in the Pac Northwest and nothing happened. Don't plan on closing vents ever.

8Complex 11-22-2001, 06:31 PM Ohhhh... thanks for reminding me, I have to close mine this winter. Nothing like snow on your air filter (turbo)... But hot DAMN will this thing be fast as it's snowing over the IC.
HndaTch627 11-22-2001, 09:44 PM wonderful...maybe we can keep 8's car from detonating now...HEHE!!!
YOu don't need to go faster you are crazy enough...NO ONE LET THIS BOY HAVE ANYTHING POWERED BY A V-8
