View Full Version : JE Pistons
Shaved 12-28-2006, 10:37 PM I am looking for individuals with experience using JE Pistons.
I have a Axis Stage 3 block that has what the compression numbers and leakdown test believed to be a damaged ringland. It was a bad map (terrible actually) coupled with a GT35r kit that really did some damage.
Compression #1 115 #2 145 #3 145 #4 145
Leakdown % #1 70 #2 3 #3 4 #4 3
My tuner and his shop want to rebuild the block and use JE pistons, claiming that Cosworth utilizes the same piston in their Subaru engines as one of the basis for justifying their use.
The engine hasn't been torn down yet, but plans are to bore the cylinders and use 100mm JE's.
The current block has CP pistons with Pauter rods. Anyway, just need some reassurance that these have been making power and lasting on big engine builds.
readymix 12-28-2006, 10:53 PM IIRC, CP uses JE forgings. They've been around for a while. I have no personal experience with them, so I'll leave that to the guys that have used them...and of course the fanboys that love to bash xxxxx brand parts.
Daz-E 12-28-2006, 10:57 PM I'll let you know! I'm using them in my rebuild, .020 over(100mm).

Daz-E,
We will probably have our builds finished at the same time! I am also using 100mm. Can't wait to get this thing back on the road, I only put 70 miles on it after purchasing the car and it already needs a new rebuild...:(
poormansporsche 12-29-2006, 06:21 AM Who does the work is probably more of a concern than the pistons. CP, JE, wiseco pistons can all fail if the tech manning the spanners is lazy or doesn't know what he's doing. I think all piston manufacturers, barring defects, will have SIMILAR failure rates on their products. It may appear that some will have higher failure than others but I think it's mostly up to the installion process. I.E.
Saying XXX piston sucks because they are cheap pieces of crap is unfair.... It's more likely that people who buy the cheaper pistons are also using cheaper machine shops and cheaper engine builders. It's expensive! Sometimes corners are cut and you have to pay for it. You spend the bucks for some Arrow pistons or whatever is the latest most expensive craze and you're going to make sure the required skills are available for the install. More skills more money. Hope that makes some sense.... I am NOT saying all pistons are created equal. Just that there are many factors to be concerned about when building a performance engine.
cheers

My engine went south less than a year of owning the car which I bought used at a dealership. My builder found the problem recently ! After my new engine was built and ready to go in he found that the turbo inlet hose had a huge opening in it underneath. Something the dealership could not find when I took it in for this, they were more worried about my so-called modified exhaust. With that being said a huge amount of uncheck air going into the engine and the ecu not compensating for it cause a lean condition in my #2 cylinder causing the 2 burn holes in the piston and the notch in the cylinder wall.
So now all that is holding things up is that turbo inlet ! I'm kinda tapped for cash right now after the holiday and plus I'm moving too, so the Suby has to take the back burner. Anyone selling for cheap please let me know ! Stock or Aftermarket(prefered).
My builder has a lot of experience with JE's and I trust him. Thats why I got everything brand new(waterpump, oil pump, tensioners, etc), so if anything breaks it can't be blamed on something I didn't replace it puts his skill on the line.
blacktalon606 01-02-2007, 11:06 AM If I recall correctly, the Driver's image WRX is making 500+ WHP and running 10's with stock displacement JE pistons.
intercoolerontop 01-02-2007, 04:28 PM i have the cobb lower compression pistons that are made by je and have so issues at all with them besides that it was hard to tell with side goes up as they are not marked.
TJL Performance 01-02-2007, 05:28 PM Very good experience with JE pistons. We use special design in our build ups
and don't have nothing but good to say about them.
Nick@JEPistons 01-02-2007, 06:19 PM Thanks for the good words guys. I am really try to make a difference over here. There is some serious technology that we utilize and our stuff is now better then ever.
jetfan8178 01-02-2007, 06:35 PM Surprised the grammer nazi's haven't hit up this thread yet
I've had good experiences in the past with JE, the SRP pistons have had some issues before, but all in all they are good for the $$.
They are still on the short list for my engine build, the only factor being that I am considering a full stroker kit instead.
Shaved 02-15-2007, 02:44 PM Had the 100mm JE's dropped, so far about 450 miles on the rebuild. Everything seems to be in order at the moment and I have only burned a bit of oil (you can see oil being burnt occasionaly when shifting).
I had them top coated as a heat dispersant, hopefully that will aid in some longevity and extra power.

wrxbdby 02-19-2007, 04:39 PM I have a Brand New set of Crawford JE Pistons for the ej257 block.
PM me if your interested.
Compression on these are 8.0:1 and they are Forged. Still in box!
flycaster 02-19-2007, 04:44 PM I have a Brand New set of Crawford JE Pistons for the ej257 block.
Crawford JE pistons? Huh, I thought Quirt only used CP's, or did that change?
