View Full Version : How do you clean an engine bay?
jus10 12-31-2006, 10:41 AM Did a brief search, but didnt come up with much info.. If anyone can lead me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.. I'm just looking for how to clean an engine bay in a timely fashion, with a clean appearance afterwards without removing the engine from the bay.. Mostly just appearance wise.. I ask this because I had a header leak.. and header leak + small time of running rich = carbon in the engine bay.
bessie 12-31-2006, 11:30 AM You can probably buy some throttle body cleaner from the auto store and spray the dirty areas with it. It should remove the carbon fairly well.

sup justen, I picked up a can of the cheap walmart engine cleaner and it worked quite well, just make sure you got a hose or pressure washer to rinse all the crap off after.
More than you ever wanted to know about detailing your engine (and everything else too):

All4bSpinnin 12-31-2006, 01:49 PM pretty good guide
i agree... that has some good info.
i always was tempted to use a pressure washer and just cover up all the electronics...
shemoves 12-31-2006, 01:52 PM I cover the MAF sensor and go to town with a hose. Also keep steer clear of other wires/elecs. What also works surprisingly well is just a damp towel.

Hank3 12-31-2006, 07:15 PM  - good job, Jamie.
bolderer 01-01-2007, 12:28 PM Don't be so hard on the guy. Not everyone spends enough time on the internet to justify it being a second job (voluntary or not).
Edit: you do need to learn how to search though. It makes your and everyone else's life a ton easier.
Call_me_Tom 01-01-2007, 01:01 PM I just use water and a pressure hose.

Black-Falcon 01-01-2007, 01:42 PM Do you cover anything up before you go at it?
turbo tecnica 01-01-2007, 02:27 PM It's a lot easier keeping a new 06 motor clean than it is bringing a new one back to looking nice. I've been looking into giving my motor a good hard cleaning as well. It's an 00 with 84k on it and it doesn't look like it got that much love, so it's going to take some elbow grease.
Bboy AJ 01-01-2007, 04:15 PM It's completely safe to just pressure wash an engine bay? At what PSI does it become dangerous, if any PSI at all?

Nope no difference between years and age. I had an '04 who's engine looked just as good. Also have a '96 Tercel beater who's engine looks better than the rest of the car.
Just a little loven is all it takes.
At what PSI does it become dangerous, if any PSI at all?I don't think for cleaning purposes that there would be any danger at using high psi. The only case that I can think of would be bending the fins on your TMIC.
ThisizBrian 01-01-2007, 07:07 PM my detailer uses 350psi steam! works great the dirt drips right off.
Black-Falcon 01-02-2007, 11:00 PM You don't have to cover any of the electronics? Like the MAF or the alt?
Sorry I R retarted.
007WRX 01-02-2007, 11:04 PM At work, I use a degreaser first then spray it with warm water. Then i use this inside out detailer and it jsut shines up really well. I think its what most dealerships do.

If they couldnt get wet, they would be covered from he factory as it is assumed it will get wet under there.
So no, you dont have to.
Yello_Rex 01-03-2007, 12:16 AM yah but not soaked... throwing a rag on top of the alt wouldnt hurt
