don't.
it will still be open deck, and that limits your ultimate power before failure.
you want unique? try a stroked EJ20G. that would be a closed deck 2.0L, that i've stroked out to 2.2L. it also has piston oil squirters. it's pretty unique, there might be ten motors like mine in the country.
get a 2.5 STi short block, get a decent machine shop to put in a set of Weisco pistons, port your heads, get cams, and engine management. other than that....

As a great JDM tuner once said "ターボ圧力に競争上の力そして速度がある." Loosely translated it means "Turbo pressure will have power and speed over the competition." His advice is great, and its true.

You could get your open deck EJ20 block sleeved and bored for 2.2L then stroke it with a STi crank and get 2.35L. Or like suggested above get closed deck 2.0L block and bore out. Your third option is get a EJ22 block (already 2.2L) and if you want stroke it upto 2.35L.
Plenty of options and s/h blocks from other motors are cheap and worth considering and the 2.5L short block is probably the best bang for buck.

I have an EJ257 crank if you want to stroke it out.
Also you will want to punch it out some too.
Bore to 92.5mm and stroke to 79mm and you will have 2123.5cc
96.5mmx79mm you get 2311.2 cc

homemade wrx,
How much do you want for the 2.5 crank? is it phase 1 or 2? I'm building a ej22 closed deck block and would like to strok it with a 2.5 crank but have gotten conflicting advice as to which crank will work. Any thoughts... anyone?

An EJ22T will need a phase 1 EJ25 NA crank as both motors are phase one. The STI crank can be fitted with some machining to the block. Its a difference of main bearing placement IIRC. It'd be just as good to get the NON-EJ257 crank and just get some kick butt bearings. New NA EJ25 cranks like two fiddy ish at the dealership.

Thanks for the info. Anybody know the part number for the NA 2.5 crank or what models and years they came in?

I don't know the model years, but they were DOHC motors. It was the first two years of the 2.5RS.

I think even the pre 98 legacy motors with the EJ25 would work. I think.

i have a 92.5mm Arias forged pistons and an ej25 phase I crank brand new if anyone needs it. the only thing you need to complete is some standra size 2.5L connecting rods.

i have a ej20g closed deck shortblock if you want to use that as your platform instead of the open deck.
