changed my oil a few days ago; replaced the oil plug washer and reused the oil plug. now im noticing puddles of oil on the floor of my garage. i jacked the car up and noticed the oil was leaking from the plug. i tightened the plug but the oil is still leaking. ive had the problem before after oil changes, im just wondering what the best solutions is? i really dont want to drain my whole system again...

Are you putting the crush washer the correct way? What did you torque down the oil drain plug to?

Maybe you have stripped oil pan threads or something...

the oil pan threads arent stripped; the plug still fits nice and snug, just fine. i wasnt aware there was a correct way to put the crush washer? i just put it on the plug and installed. what should the proper torque specs be?

IIRC, the stock Suby washer is two concentric rings bonded together... you put the wider ring towards the plug, and the smaller concentric ring towards the pan.

Also, did you make sure the drain plug doesn't have an old crush washer stuck to it?

Search the forums for the torque specs, don't remember it off the top of my head.

thanks - ill go see if my plug is remotely close to that torque...

if the plug is tight enough and the leak continues, do you guys suggest i drain the whole system and start with a new washer?

Unfortunately yes.

However, I would try to save the oil by emptying into a clean container...may only loose a little. No need to change the filter....

yea i was hoping to reuse that oil if that was the scenario

It may be a burr on the oil pan or oil pan bent.Some teflon tape around the threads always works too.

.....the washer has a flat side and a rounded side-----it ya look......the flat side goes toward the bolt head....the rounded side towards the pan.

When I used the factory 33 lbs on the torque wrench it would still leak. I Slowly increased the torque a couple of pounds each day until it stopped leaking(40lbs) For the last few oil changes I have gone straight to 40lbs and there have been no leaks.

The crush washer will leak if you over or under tighten.
