Hey guys, i need some help swapping a rear diff into my moms 96 2.2l auto trans outback. I was under the impression that it was a 4.11 fd, so went to the junkyard and picked up a 4.11fd off a 94 legacy. I got the old diff out and went to put the new one in and the axle splines were different. Then I called subaru and they told me my mom's outback was a 3.9fd.
Could someone give me some advice as to what the FD actually is, and what cars will have the diff i need. I searched for hrs on here but no dice. Thanks!

is your outback an impreza or legacy?
3.9 FD for 96 impreza.
??FD for legacy
iirc 4.11 is impreza RS and some forester. probably legacy, just not sure which ones.
splines were different because the 94 legacy had a LSD rear end. 22 VS 25 spline

Thank u sir!
I think the gear ration referance thread might be wrong because it says a 2.2L auto should be a 4.11 fd. and the 5spd would be a 3.9
Regardless I guess I gained a lsd to sell and I'll be looking for a 3.9!

I'll have a complete 96 Impreza diff to get rid of in the near future. It might take a month or so to get this other one in working order and on the car....but I can let you know if you're still interested. BTW..the LSD probably won't fit it because it's slightly smaller than the other R160s for some reason. I couldn't get the bearings to go onto my LSD. Food for thought.

Jay,
If you happen to swap diffs in the next couple weeks let me know! I need one soon though. Also the legacy diff i bought is physically larger than the one in the outback

Yep...that's what I found too. I dunno why Subaru put these little things in while others got, for all intents and purposes, real R160's. Even old skool Subies got the real R160's.....go figure.

I'll PM you if I can get this done in the next couple weeks. It'll be a longshot at best though, honestly.
