we've got the starter, IC, turboback, clutch fork pivot, shifter linkage/cable, bellhousing bolts, etc removed from the tranny and for the life of us, we can't separate the bellhousing from the engineblock.

Any tips? Pry points? Where to put the jack under the tranny? how to twist/push the engine? We can't even get it to wiggle... not even a tiny gap.

there are four of us working and we just can't get it :(

It's an 04sti by the way.

if the 6mt has the same style Throw out bearing, there is an allen bolt on the side of the transmission that you must remove to releast the throwout bearing. if you have already done this and removed all bellhousing bolts etc. its just stubborn dowels... good luck... they suck to get apart in salty ny

that;s already out. the allen is a cap that covers the release fork pivot rod which is pulled out.

The first time I seperated my block from the gearbox I had the same problem. The solution was a flat-head screwdriver and a hammer.

Yup crowbar between the block and tranny is the key.. split that bad boy apart

I had the same problem with the 5MT and just got a set of prybars and a hammer. Bent a couple of screwdrivers to first break it open, then the prybars worked to do the rest. I know; it's ridiculous...3-4 guys pulling, pushing, kicking, whatever and nothing.

Good luck! It took JimTweet and 3 others working together like 4 hours to seperate the tranny from the mototr when we did his 6speed swap. Patience and perserverence is all that's needed. Oh, and retard stremff helps too.

Nick - are you on a lift?

right next to the drain plug is a spot on the case where you can put the end of a pry bar. You wedge this bar against the front subframe. A quick smack will start to separate the two. It goes without saying that a longer bar will yield better results.

Before you put it back together put a touch of grease around the edge of the bell housing.

Hey TiC, Tony called me back earlier and gave us the vital tip which was "kick the hell out of it" (referring to the 2x4 used as a prybar) and also the putty knife wedge trick.

Got it off :)

Getting it back in was just as fun but it mostly back together now. It's down to stuff that I can do by myself and jason (car owner) is going out of town monday so i can just work on it a bit before work each afternoon until it's finished.

Thanks!

Kick the hell out of it....I was gonna post that. Give Jason my love....we don't hear much of him these days and a few of us down here still consider him a local. :)

I will now forever refer to a 6MT clutch swap as a "kick it and stick it" install. You gotta kick the heck out of a prying device while sticking it with a putty knife, screwdriver, etc. Can't believe how much effort it takes to split this thing.
