View Full Version : Should I go OBD-II?

I have a 93 L and I'm trying to decide between a 02+WRX or a EJ20G(JDM) swap. I know the JDM swap would be cheaper but I think I'll have a better chance at smog if I go OBD-II(California). What would be the advantages of keeping my car OBD-I/OBD-II? What is the PROS and CONS between ECUTEK and the POWER FC? I'd like to have flexibility for future upgrades but my goal is to have 325WHP on pump gas daily driven w/ water injection. Is the savings with the JDM swap worth the extra trouble? i.e. locating parts, smog, upgrade limitations, obd-1...

WRX swap. an AWD car can't do the roller test. and since pre 96 it has no plug in capability. go WRX, it's newer and more parts are around for it.

in ohio i had an idle test and thats it. AWD dosen't go on rollers, and it's pre obdII so they can't plug in and read it like they can on new cars.

most G,K parts are the same as other USDM cars. some little parts aren't avail. maybe in canada. def UK and JDM. but most of my parts were legacy turbo or RS or WRX parts from the US. i have an EJ20K swapped L.

Maybe in Ohio you don' go on the rollers, but here in Colorado you do. And my understanding is that CA is going to the dyno too. But that's really a mute point in this situation.

An OBD-I car will only be tested for their emissions in CA. There's nowhere to plug into it. As such, one can fairly safely install an early swap and not worry about it IF (and that's a big if) they have it tuned properly. I personally wouldn't take my chances with a swap running on a stock ECU for an older WRX swap. I would definitely run it with a PowerFC and get to a local dyno where I can tune it and test it myself to have a good idea that it's going to be within spec. If that's beyond one's capabilities or motivation, then they should probably go with the USDM swap...

i didn't realize any emissions dynos were AWD capable. i figured it's possible seeing as how most are mustang AWD dynos made here in twinsburg ohio!

i figured newer engine is always the way to go for emissions. especially if you're comparing to a JDM setup with troublesome parts lists.

my engine is OBDII and car OBDI. so i can go idle test and be fine. i'd actually like to see what it does on the rollers in another state!

can i run my car on rollers just for S&G? does Utah have rollers for AWD?

Keith -

AFAIK, only the Denver/Boulder areas require the roller test. Keep that in mind on your way through.

so it seems bigger areas(more population) have the emissions test, not every county. ohio is similar. down south they are rarer compared to clev. area.

thanks tho!

Yep.
Back in CA, I used to worry about doing a JDM swap into an OBD-II car. Here it doesn't worry me. Even though I live in an OBD-II county, there's plenty of people who don't that would buy such a car. And I wouldn't keep something like that more than a couple of years...

/\/\/\

im kind of in that situation. not all counties do emissions. 5 min down the road in next county they have none. my friend has open header everything for that reason(unfortunately).

Is anyone able to tell if there's wiring missing from this swap that I'll need? Anything else missing that brings up any flags to anyone? The motor is going into a 93Lwagon5spd1.8L. Not sure if the tranny will match my rear diff but if not I'll just sell it. What are some thoughts on the price. What do you think they mean by "The bypass valve is broken"? Easy fix?

the bypass is the same part as the 89-90 legacy turbo

it missing the IC

FWIW that is the wagon 220ps td04 model .. that is why it hasn't sold

Thanks for the heads up. I thought the wagon 220ps td04 only came on the automatics. I assumed it wasnt because it was a manual.

bookmark it for future reference...

And if you got a different ECU, that car would make more power. A lot of it is tuning. I've got a v2 STI ECU that I would sell you for $200...
