I Just did an oil change yesterday. So i did everything fine except there is oil drippping. Kinda scared...If I did anything wrong.
This is what i did.

Took out the 17mm bolt from the oil pan.
Took out the filter.
Replace the ring with a newer one.
screwed the filter but forgot to lubricate it
When I tightened the 17mm bolt to the oil pan and it maid cracking sound.
(I think thats where i went wrong. Did I strip the oil pan?)
How much am I supposed to tighten?

Please help
Lawrence

Did you look underneath to see where the oil is dripping from?

is it dripping from the drain plug or the oil filter?

you might have cross threaded the drain plug...

May have been some dirt/small gravel particle that whent crunch...Or could have over tightened it, or it may not be tight enough...I would back it off some and check if threads are OK, (you can turn plug by hand a few turns) and re-tighten.

sorry about the late reply. The drip is actually from the drain plug. Do you know the torque spec on the bolt?

If I really have cross threaded it, How can I fix it? Do i have to get a brand new oil pan?

i've done 3 oil change with my subaru
and i didnt really tighten it according to the torque spec
i just make sure i dont OVER-tighten it

anyway...i think there's better way to fix it than to buy a new oil pan
its alot of work...stop by a local mechanic and ask for PROFESIONAL ADVICE!

good call my friend! You should ALWAYS replace the drain plug crush washer when changing your oil.

It will distort and will not seal correctly. For the <$1.00 it costs, is it worth a new engine not to replace it?

Okay, so it won't leak enough to cause engine failure, but it will make you fell a whole lot better if you don't see any leaks!!!
