View Full Version : Really noob question

First off I am a noob to the whole built motor scene. Ive been lurking the forums for a while to try to gain some kind of info. I just need more help from you guys. Well I have a 04wrx with a vf34, and all its suppporting mods, and its gotten really boring for me. Im sure this has happened to someone else too.

So yeah, now I am just looking for more power,(while not trying to blow up anything).

The few questions that I have is, Ive been reading about sti shortblocks, long blocks, bottom ends and all that. But what is the main difference? I know sti shortblocks and wrx shortblocks are the same right?

If I wanted more power, torque wise, how can I begin? Should I just get a sti shortblock, and would I need any supporting mods?

HA also please Id like to know the cheapest route too. I have the money but id just like to keep it as cheap as possible.

Please help a fellow suby noob out.

Thanks guys

1) STi shortblock bolts up to the ej20 heads and the only thing you have to change is the ECU settings.

2) more torque is most easily gained through increasing displacement. So yes, by going to 2.5L you will feel a difference

3) the only supporting mod you need is the ECU adjustment. Any others obviously help and while you have the eingine torn apart it's the perfect time to change things while saving on labor costs.

4) STi shortblock costs somewhere around 1800 new last i checked (i could be off now) I replaced some other stuff so my bill was higher. but if I remember correctly it was 1800 block, 600 labor, and 5-700 depending on the ECU tuning I wanted.

hope that helps... if you have other questions let me know. I can always find the reciepts and give you really accurate numbers.

in 06 the blocks are the same i belive. be for that the wrx came with a 2.0 open deck block and a sti came with a 2.5 semi-closed deck block. now the sti block is stronger will give you more tq lower but you need to have a set up that will work with that much displacement. a vf 34 is pretty small for a 2.5 and would probably act just like a stock car. that turbo will run out of breath on that motor. so if you want to do a short block swap , you can get one from subaru for $1500 ( positions, rods, crank, and bearings) but i would get a turbo that would work a little better.

oh ok. where did you guys buy your shortblocks from? $1500-1800 doesn't sound that bad

What about throwing a stock STI turbo on it? I mean if it works on an STI it should work well on a hybrid as well, no?

Yeah I was thinking abuot that too.. Also would I need a new tranny,I mean I will be planning on getting one in the near future but would this block last on a stock wrx tranny and clutch?

You really are better off asking this question in another forum. I'm not trying to be a jerk, but this forum is for *built* engines, not swapping a 2.0L shortblock for a 2.5L shortblock.

There are a bajillion people in either the 2.0 or 2.5 forums who can tell you how to take a 2.0L WRX with VF34 and head toward more power.

Make a post there, include all current mods, explain how you want to use the car and what you prefer (low-end torque? autocrossing? drag racing? all-around street car for daily driving with not a lot of turbo lag?), and give people a ballpark estimate of how much more power you're looking for.

Just my 2 cents.

and in mn we have a club(mnsubaru.com) and we get a discount at the dealer for parts, thats why there only $1500. and everything will bolt up fine like your tranny
