I work in the parts department at a Subaru dealership and we are helping a tech there with a EJ22T buildup. He was asking us if he could purchase the actual oil jet, known as the piston squirters, separately.

I have looked through the service manual and all the parts catalog film, but they are nowhere to be found. They are referenced in the service manual as "oil jets" and are shown as part of the oil pump/lines assembly, but nothing further.

Does anyone know if they are a serviceable, or replaceable part or do they come as par tof the short block assembly?

I just bought a ej22t crank case with only 2 squirters on ebay. I'm gonna have to fight him through paypal unless there is a way to find this part. Please anyone with part number or some spares laying around let us know!

Hey low blow, you mentioned servicable. Does this guy have some old squirters he wants to sell?

I think that one is messed up...meaning that the valve inside it isn't working properly and instead of risking that it will fail, he wants to replace it.

I have been looking and looking for these things all day and they dont seem to have a subaru part number. I am going to try and call subaru tomorrow about them and see what they say.

I don't know if they're servicable or not, but I seem to remember reading a LONG time ago (like 5 years+) that those squirters were Nissan parts.

I just tried searching for it and came up with nothing... I may be completely mistaken on this one. :-/

Nope. I ran into this problem back in 2003 when building mine. There is no part # for it. You need to buy the shortblock. :(

You can not purchase those new or used from anywhere. The dealer does not offer them unless you purchase the entire case as a unit.
I've got 3 ej22t cases over here without piston squirters in them, so I know your agony. It doesn't really need them but they are nice to have. You can just plug them up and you will even gain a little more oil pressure when you do.

Luckily I was able to get ahold of the guy who sold me my block and he found the missing squirters.

I know that the VW 1.8T motors have piston oil squirters. Maybe you could buy one of them at the VW/Audi dealership and see if you could modify them to fit.

I think I've still got a couple of these floating around in my garage. I will check and post back. They are notorious for falling out of the engine. Every EJ22T or closed deck Ej20G I have ever torn down, with a single exception, has had a minimum of 1 squirter in the oil pan when I got it apart.

I will also mention that when I was discussing an Ej22t build with Trey Cobb, he was pretty adamant about removing the squirters. It was his opinion that while they do cool the underside of the piston, that benefit was mostly negated by the additional friction of oil being sprayed around under there. Add to that the fact they are known to come out, and could cause catastrophic damage, it wasn't a headache he wanted to deal with. I will see if I can find a picture. I had one that was totally mashed and mangled by the crank on it's way to the pan. I could totally see how a loose one of those could fubar someone's built motor if it popped loose and went the wrong direction...

I just split my 2.2T case and all the oil squirters were still installed and intact. This block came out of a local rally car.

However the squirters were very loose. Tighter than hand tight but required little to no force to remove them.

I will be re-installing them using a high end lock tight.

hmm, I think I better check my block halves tonight, I had no idea these came out so easily.

Yeah, some quality high-temp loctite would work wonders on keeping them in.

Ok here is a twist. I am looking for some oil squirters for my ER27 engine (XT6), obviously they are almost impossible to find. What do you think of this?

Instead of installing a squirter that is removable, why couldnt you just tap a .03 inch diam hole into the bearing mains in the same place the squirter would go? You wouldnt need to worry about them falling out. The only problem would be is that it wouldnt be regulated to close when oil pressure drops like the 2.2T.

to service them all you do is blow air with a air gun if it sprays they are good.

so what do i get if i get the part number.

what are these things made out of? Is it a check ball and spring or something?

can I braze or solder them in?

most of the ones I've seen are just a passage drilled in the rod.

interesting anyway, I'm picking up an ej22t tonight. I guess I'll hook up an oil pressure gauge to see if I need to tear into it. I'm guessing the oil pressure should be about 20-40 warm?

Back in the day we used carburetor jets for oil squirters - you can get pretty much whatever size you want!

Thing is, the Subaru oil jets are of a very clever design with built-in pressure valves which close below a certain oil pressure to prevent engine damage. I bet there are no carburettor jets with small springs and balls :)

i will plug mine up, redrill my crank like the spec c crank, and rev to 8500rpms or so. run the 12mm oil pump. Thus EJ22T that's currently in my WRX swap has all of its squirters and are on there well. They didn't move when I touched them.

I will buy any oil squirters any one wants to sell at a reasonable price that aren't damaged. If their stopped up but not damaged and the price is right I will also buy them.
