View Full Version : Disc Brake Swap from WRX/RS to L
mxpunk 01-12-2007, 08:30 AM At the moment i'm not really sure what im going to be getting, it's either going to be an older RS or L (98-01) and right now i'm looking at a 97 L that is pretty nice, but as you know the L's were equipped with rear drums
I heard the L wagons were all-wheel disc equipped, so I was wondering if anyone has put the rear discs on a drum'd L and what exactly would be needed? Are the axles any different? Brake lines??
thanks
ten80 01-12-2007, 08:57 AM I did the swap on my 03 TS. Didn't need new axles and I ended up using one 02 WRX hub and one late 90's impreza hub. They were identical except for paint color. I'm fairly certain that you will need new brake lines, but you might as well install some stainless ones while you're at it. It's a fairly straight forward swap and if you have PB blaster and all the right tools, it should take about 4-8 hours depending on the number of stuck bolts
imprezzakc 01-12-2007, 09:06 AM You will need the hubs , calipers and rotors , brake lines and most important the E-brake cables . Like ten80 said it is pretty strait forward .
kheff46 01-12-2007, 09:16 AM wagons had no all disc models. LX impreza and RS impreza had all disc. thats it besides WRX/STi imprezas.
parts as they describe. but it took me 3 hours with some struggles here and there(mainly rusted lines and seized bolts). good swap tho. easy and effective. better when replacing rear brakes too!

mxpunk 01-12-2007, 10:05 AM Thanks!! I didnt think anyone woulda' did this
I guess ill be scowering some junkyards & the internet for some parts if i get this car:)
Im starting to understand the beauty of the "lego" like parts interchangebility of the subarus ...:)
subbyspeed 01-12-2007, 10:18 AM yup.. get the knuckles, brakes and ebrake cable's.
Matt Monson 01-12-2007, 12:12 PM While you are at it, get the rear lateral links and a sway bar from a sway bar car. Then you only need to be in there once to do everything that you would want to change back there.
And as has been mentioned, be ABSOLUTELY sure to get the E-brake cables still attached to the hubs. Most wreckers just cut them. You will either need to pull them yourself, or find a wrecker that will remove them for you intact.
It's not a hard job, but it's a nasty job. I have done it a couple of times, and hope to never do it again. If one doesn't have a lift, it's just crappy to do...
subbyspeed 01-12-2007, 12:35 PM if adding a rear sway bar, be sure to get the brackets that bolt to the body that then hold the other brackets for the bushings on the sway bar..

My 98 LGT wagon has all disc, and anything from it should swap right over to an "L" model as it is the closest model in the trim line.
mxpunk 01-14-2007, 11:54 PM if i get an L, hopefully my cousin will upgrade the brakes on his WRX and sell me his :)
along with the motor :)

I hope he upgrades his hubs, knuckles, ebrake cables and wiring harness too. ;)

Just for correctness I know for a fact at least the 96 outback sport had all 4 disks.
kheff46 01-15-2007, 11:42 AM really my friend nate has one. and is identical to my 98 drum equipped OBS. so that's a weird one!
listed in cars101(iirc) is all the related info on what generally came on these models, and what was an option.
my guess is she bought the safety pkg. which was ABS and 4 discs, and auto only(which was basically what the LX model impreza had, auto , ABS, 4wheel disc(L's were drum).
but good find nonetheless. LX's are rare like brighton's kinda.

linsavy 01-15-2007, 01:44 PM A MY97 L already has a rear sway bar.
The easiest swap is to get the whole subframe, diff, axles, brakes and hubs to swap because the lateral links will be stuck on to the knuckle.
The only pre-02 2.2l wagons to get discs were the 96 OBS and the LX with ABS and auto tranny.
It's cheaper to just upgrade the shoes.
mxpunk 01-15-2007, 04:24 PM I hope he upgrades his hubs, knuckles, ebrake cables and wiring harness too. ;)
Me too!
