Maybe this will shut Unclemat up. STI Legacy OUTBACK, it exists and has a much better likelyhood of crossing the Pacific than the LSTI wagon. :p
xcntrk75 01-12-2007, 11:36 AM Oh man, it’s not even a turbo… STi components perhaps, but no snail = no fun… :(

Anybody my posting a while back of maybe offering an Outback GT, which would basically be a L-GT but with the Outback grille and badges? Well, this is not that far off from my original thinking here. If anything, it's taking my idea and just pushing it a bit further.
I'd like to see it happen.
Bob
Catsmeow 01-12-2007, 11:57 AM Pretty cool except for the grille. Yuck
The JDM/EDM grille looks great compared to the train wreck we're about to get on the 2008 USDM Outback.
dvon1981 01-12-2007, 11:58 AM i don't get the point. why jack up ride height and make it sti? and don't say rally cuz that car is too big.
BigElm 01-12-2007, 12:05 PM I really think if one takes alittle time to analyze that Subaru may be doing away with the Leg GT wagon to make the wagon available only with an Outback name, this will explain why Subaru threw this "STi" version of the Outback. I can see this:
Sedan version only = Legacy
Wagon verson only = Outback (GT? Bob you may have put your finger on it)
Clearly Subaru is test the public's response.
Legacys sell more in sedan form than wagons.
Outbacks sell more in wagon form than sedans.
Outback GT = lower suspension, 2.5 Turbo or 3.0R availability, performance wheels/tires - there goes your Leg GT in new form.
I like the idea.... :)
Beaverboy 01-12-2007, 12:05 PM Sweet, so it's like an H6 LLBean to STi rebadge.
amdmaxx 01-12-2007, 12:22 PM weak. Needs H6 Turbo
HB_Dad 01-12-2007, 12:32 PM Sedan version only = Legacy

Yep, I've been saying this all along! ;)

Big rally car!:p

finally! Big Elm just might be able to kill that damn cancellation of legacy thread :D:disco:

I will shut up, regardless, but I have no interest in any Outback whatsoever, unless the styling is radically changed to be... Legacy Wagon like. Unlikely given how ugly 2008 one is.
Even the JDM one with Chrysler-grille looks hideous.
Besides, even if dropped still higher than stock Legacy.
b4wantab 01-12-2007, 01:17 PM Ok I am really confused, yes sometime it does not take that much. My understanding was that the ride hieght between the legacy and the outback was more than just suspension. That the OB had a body lift also. Can someone clarify?
That STi OB doesn't look that low.
Thanks, peace,
Greg

USDM Outback has the dreaded body lift, plus there are differences in rear links (and of course struts/shocks/springs).
I am sure that non-USDM Outbacks ride lower than the obscene USDM one. I am not sure if it has body lift or not. Chances are it does not. I can verify that later.
that's hardly an "STI" car. Just went to the existing STI catalog and bolted on what fits and made it a show car. Nothing more than any of us could have done by ordering through Japanparts.com or avoturboworld.com.
unclemat 01-12-2007, 02:03 PM ^ what he says.
In fact, the Legacy "tuned by STI" is no different.
well, not so fast! that car supposedly has a remapped STI ECU (good for some power on a turbo car), but otherwise I agree.
Coati 01-12-2007, 02:17 PM well, not so fast! that car supposedly has a remapped STI ECU (good for some power on a turbo car), but otherwise I agree.
Is there another car somewhere? All I see is a NA car with an automatic.:(

the reference was to the 2.0L turbocharged 'Legacy Spec B Tuned by STI' sold in Japan and Australia last year - basically the turbo version of the OB you see pictured here in this thread. Take a Spec B and throw every part on it from the STI accessory catalog and sell it as a 'premium model' and you get the concept. Think of it like taking a BMW 330i and putting all the 'M Sport' stuff on it. It's still not an M3. ;)
isn't this more torque?
Nm != ft/lbs

You don't need to make up a BMW 3-series example: They really did it with the "M535i" in the 1980s:D
^^Not really a good idea, and you don't see BMW trying that **** anymore.
If it's got an M on it, it's special, just as STI should be for Subaru. I don't care what the base car is, but when you give it your motorsport/tuner label, it better be more than just a simple trim/suspension job. :disco:
kidatari 01-12-2007, 02:29 PM http://accessory.subaru.co.jp/as2007/e_car/img/details/d3-img.jpg
I do not see enough pedals.

I do see alot of 3 series with M badges and M wheels though. Perhaps more of a dealer accessory than full model like the one you mentioned. :)
MudBoogers 01-12-2007, 03:27 PM Its not meant for rallying, its meant for BAJA! (j/k)
Add an H6Snail and a 6spd+3 pedals and I'd buy one (and my knees would be forever grateful)...
rallyblues 01-12-2007, 03:44 PM not even a turbo....
all this means is that Subaru is looking into supporting the OB w/ STI bits and pieces. This is great news!
and, yet, it's not 'news' because this stuff has been out for years!
and, yet, it's not 'news' because this stuff has been out for years!
but somebody had the "ah-ha" moment to throw it on an OB
"...hey boss I had an epiphany"
yup - it's just dancing on the grave of the Legacy wagon ;)

Ok.. but for the sake of what we're thinking "may" come, do you really think that if Subaru has a 'performance' oriented wagon (OB GT, for example), it's going to have the same height and suspension as the regular OB? Come on....

I might be wrong, but I believe it could not be classified as a truck. That means separate crash testing, separate EPA certifications, etc. This adds up to the cost of introducing such a model.

Sounds like its lowered 2cm and comes with black Brembos. Estimated cost if it was sold as is in the market is around 4.8M yen (3.0R Outback goes for 3.1M yen)
Jaylyons1 01-13-2007, 01:53 AM i think i actually like the original outback better... with the front end anyway. the wheels look super easy to keep clean tho! alot better then the current ones

this looks as low as a legacy wagon.. pretty slammed for an outback if you ask me.. after seeing these pics i like it

that front end is what's in store for '08, not STI specific

wait thats not true.. didn't you see the NAIAS auto show pics?
yes, yes it is. did I say USDM? No, I did not. ;) The USDM cars get a different look. The car shown above has the JDM grille which makes sense since it's in JAPAN!

BlackStar 01-13-2007, 02:28 PM For my understanding, there is a huge difference between "Tunede by STI" and a STI Version. I don't consider this Outback to be a STI Version.
Subaaaru 01-13-2007, 05:36 PM Oh man, it’s not even a turbo… STi components perhaps, but no snail = no fun… :(
+1 they slould've upgraded the engine...that outback is mainly eye candy. Looks nice though;)
shirokuma 01-14-2007, 01:05 AM Just to clarify something I saw earlier, all of the current "tuned by sti" Legacy/Outback models do *not* come with a STI ecu of any sort. All of the STI tuning is in regards to suspension, brakes, interior bling and a set of mufflers.
Cheers,
Paul Hansen

keepclam 01-14-2007, 02:29 AM Ooh, can I get that roof rack anywhere?!
Coati 01-14-2007, 03:25 AM For my understanding, there is a huge difference between "Tunede by STI" and a STI Version. I don't consider this Outback to be a STI Version.
"Tuned by STI" is Subaru-speak for "how the base car should/would have been set up if the world only consisted of car enthusiasts rather than candyasses."
Siper2 01-14-2007, 08:30 AM Interesting for photos, but that's about it.
An STI Outback seems a little strange, that is unless Subaru competed officially in, say, non-WRC offroad events. Then, involving the STI arm would be more meaningful.
But I'd sooner see STI give something like the Outback, parts that better befit its target market.
=S2=
Mike Wevrick 01-14-2007, 10:30 AM keepclam: That rack looks like a stock Legacy rack to me (except maybe the color).

what are you trying to say man, that I'm wrong? Mebbe, but I know the Australian Tuned by STI LGT got a remapped ECU. Perhaps just to accommodate lower quality gas than available in JP.
flyinpig 01-14-2007, 11:56 AM Is that yellow on the WRX in the back a stock color in Japan? I love it!
That Astral Yellow is only available with the RA-R and is limited to 50 models.
KeithvH 01-14-2007, 10:04 PM Hmmm...basically I like it. I like it better than the pics from the Detroit show for the '08 OB that's coming here. I'm one of those whining about the loss of a Legacy wagon (and don't EVEN get me going on about the lack of a manual tranny! :furious: ) Still too high for my tastes but better. I really, really like the idea of having a "street" version of the OB. Or at least make a dealer installed "sport" suspension kit like some brands do. I just don't need that much lift. AND I do drive off road, as a matter of fact, with my current legacy and have a 1/4" long dirt driveway with a significant hill.
keepclam 01-15-2007, 12:41 AM ^world's shortest driveway? :p
hondaslayer 01-15-2007, 12:46 AM keepclam: That rack looks like a stock Legacy rack to me (except maybe the color).

That's the STI Type RA-R
Got any openings in that rock you been living under?
keepclam 01-15-2007, 12:47 AM keepclam: That rack looks like a stock Legacy rack to me (except maybe the color).
I'm not sure if it's metal, or if it's painted. Either way, I like it better than black.
Porter 01-15-2007, 01:50 AM An STI Outback seems a little strange, that is unless Subaru competed officially in, say, non-WRC offroad events. Then, involving the STI arm would be more meaningful.
It's no stranger than an STi Forester... another seemingly contradictory pair of brands.
only1agam 01-15-2007, 03:38 AM It's no stranger than an STi Forester... another seemingly contradictory pair of brands.
this is a phenomenal point.. i never thought of that.. kill the legacy wagon, then come out with a Outback STI it sounds crazy, but who would want a slammed Outback? this question can be answered with the question "who wants a slammed forester STI? (ME :D)"
DJ 9iron 01-15-2007, 01:23 PM Looks like a chrysler.

Correct - it was remapped for the Aussie market, but not for performance per se.
