View Full Version : Have you noticed this disturbing trend?

Because of the popularity of the WRX, membership for this club has increased dramatically. I don't think that's a bad thing. However, have you noticed that posters are getting rude and insulting? I've only been with this club for a year now, but I always thought i-club was friendly place. Now, post someting that someone doesn't want you hear and you get insulted at.

This also happens in the Real World. I have been taunted several times by WRX owners for driving a MY01 Impreza. I suppose having a slower and older model offends them somehow. Oh well, more incentive for me to get boost.

It is definetly different than it used to be but that can be expected what a board increases exponentially. :)

i've only been a memeber since last may but perused the boards every once in a while before that and the attitude has TOTALLY changed since then. Everyone used to work together on this board...now if you post something that doesn't tell them what it is they want to hear you are the one at fault even if you are right. The I-club used to be one of the most friendly clubs out there, but recently it's going to hell. but that's to be expected since the WRX output for a year will be more then the RS output total for 4 years...i guess that is just what happens when a company finds the niche.

Where do you think all those people came from???

It has changed pretty dramatically. I used to read almost every thread and everyone was generally helpful and friendly. I now skim through a few key forums, and the threads I read have insults and lots of mis-information.

It also seems that there is a lot of seperation between the WRX owners and the "other" Subaru owners. Some WRX owners seem to look down on all other Subarus, while some non-WRX owners are hostile towards the WRX for various reasons.

Most of this can be expected when you go from < 500 users 2 years ago to 12,000+. There will be growing pains, but this board has done better than many other ones I frequent.

I just try to be open to other ideas, and if someone disagrees with my opinion I just move on and ignore the attempt to start a flame war.

Don't fret guys... I do share you're pain a little... and the moderators, Alex, and myself do try to keep things in check... but it does get more and more difficult when we're gaining an average of about 1000+ members a month.

It will calm down, or the newbies will get a handle on the ropes... or they will end up someplace else. But as long as this club still has people like us (the old school) subaru drivers who bought the car for more than just the marketing hype we'll be able to survive anything.

And for any of the WRX owners that think GC8s are slow... tell them to visit me in South FL... I'll gladdly show them what the tail end of a GC8 (a real impreza) looks like under rapid accelleration! ;)

the overall attitude has definatly changed here. but what can you do, just let THEM be. genuinely helpful and curious people use to be a dime a dozen when i joined. ask a question, come back in an hour and your question was answered along with advice. now you gotta read through the flames and insults to learn anything. and that's IF you learn anything. but eventually everyone will either calm down or leave. and we gotta remember not to lump everyone together and say they are ALL bad apples. ;)

I've been a member since August of this year and for the most part, local and virtual members have welcomed me into the i-club family to which I am grateful. I've gleened a great deal of information from this board.

I like many other WRX owners clearly recognize if it wasn't for the support of Impreza RS enthusiasts that the WRX would have never found its way to the US. Many of our chapter members have RS's and even L's and they receive a lot of props and respect from the WRX owners.

I think a less obvious yet contributing factor to the growing lack of civility has to do with age. I've always said that the low sticker price/high horsepower quotient of the WRX has attracted the street racer ("Fast and Furious") element. Let's face it, the AWD and 227HP makes the WRX one of the biggest bangs for the buck out there to date. The WRX has essentially become a speed platform which resulted in a growing number of younger WRX drivers who care more about the 227hp and could care less about who made the car.

I'm pretty sure you can draw similarities between the tone of posts dating back two years at the ClubSi forum to posts appearing at the i-club over the last 9-12 months. I think what we are seeing a shift from Subaru enthusiasts to "speed" enthusiasts. That's evident from the growing number of threads about kills, midnight runs, speed related accidents, 400-600hp WRX's and 11-second 1/4 miles.

I think this has been eluded before but here it goes again. The best thing that happened to SOA and the i-club was the US introduction of the WRX. The worse thing that happened to SOA and the i-club was the US introduciton of the WRX.

There's a lot of great information on this board, you just have to sift through all the "stuff". With the introductions of clubWRX and various "speed" centric forums some of this will die off so long as these types of threads aren't fueled. Then those members who are more intersted in speed over Subaru will find a site that best feeds them.

Just my 2¢

Things have changed, but like Nick said,,time will tell.I used to scan all the forums, now, like AaronB I just scan and post in a few.Another thing ive noticed is the high number guys(not all)dont have a clue what makes a internal combustion engine work.
Ive seen posts like,,"what does an intake do?","why do i need an exhuast?" "What do the belts do"?,,and these arent in the newbie forum.
I can imagine what the Factory Forced Induction forum is like.Turbos arent my forte, but Damn! Did thy ever even read the manual??? I even got tired of posting ,,do a search,,,when the infamous "how do i rest the ecu question came up".
And hey,,I know i was new to Subaru once too,and this club got me up to speed real fast and for that im gratefull ,But these new guys seem to demand a reply, and if it's not what they wanna hear, they flame ya or get cute. The real old skoolers dont seem to post as much anymore,,makes ya wonder.
Rant mode off,,,,

Sadly, this is the attitude I take as well. My member number is a low one (three digits!:D ) because I joined this board back in early 2000, but I didn't get my RS until this past August. Guess that's what you call "research"!

But seriously, I come across posts with some frequency that I see wrong info, etc, posted in, and I think about posting a correction, or at least an opinion. But then I stop and realize that it's not even worth it, as most of the people won't listen anyways. Guess that defeats the purpose of being on the board, but at least I can come in here and bitch! :D

Hey guys and gals, lets not stereotype now.

1) I am generally very considerate of other posters.

2) Never owned a Honda, let alone sold one... :) The WRX is my first Turbo, and I think that all of you who spent the time and money to put work into the earlier Impreza's are all the better for it. Does it really matter what kind of car we all have? Hey, we all like driving, and presumably like doing so fast.....

3) New membership is good for the board, if you pay attention to the A@@holes, they will just post more often, and more rudely. But new members bring new ideas and opinions.

Well, I try to be as helpful and as informative as I can. I have loved the gc8 style since I first saw them. Until I was really in the market for a newer car- new job, more money- I just admired them from afar and figured they were up around 25-30k. Well, when I found out how cheap they were I jumped at the chance to buy one. I love these cars. The honda was scary in the snow and I just had a feeling something was gunna break soon on it. I still have the accord, but dont drive it- and nothing went wrong with it. However, I was not your typical "bling bling" Honda owner. Both of my cars before that were 80's SUV's. The accord was a decent car that fit my price range at the time that I bought it. I LOVE the Impreza then. I heard that Colorado has the most Imprezas sold out of any state. Not sure if it's true, but it could very well be. I see these cars everywhere. I wave whenever I see a scooby (outback and legacy wagon owners give me weird looks) But it's all in fun. I'm lovin the car, but I always have. I dont remember ever seeing a commercial for the gc8 when it came out. Oh, and for the record, I dont like the looks of the rex at all. The wagons aren't bad, but the sedans just look strange to me. I bought the car in september and have put 5500 miles on so far. Thanks for the community guys! And dont mind my high member number.

Pardon the long reply... here are some quotes taken form my first month of membership. nobody involved was higher than #4000, the crack about newb-diots came from a member well below #100. A couple illusrate the warm welcome I personally recieved.

So I don't think things have changed much... and a GC8 is a 1993-2000 WRX 4-door, do I remember that right, I wouldn't want to perpetuate any misinformation...

"Even if the new WRX has some features the 911 also has, it still will not step up to its
performance and quality level."

"Interesting that you have a 2002 WRX in your signature without having it yet. Funny..."

"WRXster, you own a 2002 WRX in Sedona Red Pearl? I'll cut back on the caffeine if you cut back on whatever it is you're smoking."

"If you're white I'd love to see ya yell the N word in any predominantly black area..."

"Get your nose outta other peeps biz...."

"Newb-idiots... Now that I've caught your attention,"

"There is no Newbie descrimination--until some knob with a name like StRtR4crWrX asks how low everyone has lowered their car. Then everyone notices he only has 10 posts..."

"... are some of the lowest forms of human beings on the planet, aside from truck drivers. They will @@@@ you."

"enough already....!!!! i am going to get more coffee..."

"Man did this thread go downhill fast. I think everyone is forgetting what the i-club is all about: Sharing our passion and enthusiasm for primarily Subarus, but also the automobile in general. Not to bicker with each other over petty crap like this."

":monkey:"

AaronB

WRXster,

Not sure why you quoted me I never mentioned member numbers, etc. I also said "some" in both instances. I can also promise that not a single one of those quotes are from me. Just confused why you would quote me...

When I say things have changed drastically it is true, but you have to remeber I have been on the board since '99 and less than 400 members, so it has changed drastically. Maybe things haven't changed from January 2001 to now very much, but I can assure you that things have changed from when I joined to now. Back then we all knew eachother pretty well. Something that would be impossible with the sheer volume of members now. It was more of a family type atmosphere. As with all things that grow bigger people have to learn to adapt, the board is suffering growing pains, but things will stabilize soon.

Just so you know I do understand member numbers and post counts don't always reflect how much knowledge someone has.

Aaron

hmm, correct me if I'm mistaken,
but I think that there is a general tendency for people to talk down on cars that are less expenisve and not as fast.
For example,
back in the day of the 2.2, people would much prefer the 2.5....
now SOME WRX owners feel superior to 2.5 owners,
and SOME 2.5 owners feel superior to 2.2 owners.
Isn't that just kinda the pecking order? People go places, they decided their car is better, then they like to establish themselves as knowledgable.
I dunno, I might be full of something or another...i haven't been on the I-club board that long, but on all the other ones, I have noticed these trends.
Some people are here to meet new people, some people are here to show and share their enthusiasm with fellow sube owners, and some people are here to feel better about themselves. :)
I think...you ignore those that annoy you and talk to those you like
YEAY!

The WRX crowd
Newer members
Younger crowds.

Then I must be almost your worst enemy!

I want to say "look before you leap"...don't make assumptions. I am new to the car world and I ask alot of questions, read even more and I also tend to take a course at UTI to learn more and more for the fun of it. I love my imprez and I love subarus overall even more. I know I don't know as much as you guys. I know that I ask more then I help. But come on. I joined the club looking for a group of people who were going to be as crazy abotu suabrus and as fun as I . I also expected that Questions asked are questions answered.I understand the annoyance of the whole question always ebign asked over and over but you ignore and move on. let the moderators handel it. This forum is all about the sharing of information and learning. I dont have a problem with WRX owner... yah Im a little jealous of the power, but oh well. I think the problem with some newer members (not all of them, k?) Is that they think by owning the car it gives them some special knowledge. (IE I know a faster car so I must be smarter) Then there is the guys who have come over from the honda world and assume that everything works the same. (Witness the AEM intake saga.. Seems since it is familiar it is gospel and must be the best) Bah. I joined up quite awhile ago now, was poking about long before that. Ive learned a hell of alot about cars since signing up. I just hope we can do the same for all the new folks too. Tough bit is there is alot more new folks compared to people who really know what they are talking about relative to what it used to be.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: the sins of the few ruin it for everybody else.

My biggest complaint is the attitude by some that they just don't care to learn how the car works. My personal attitude about everything is that I want to know how things work. I see this in my daily life as well, even in the field I'm in (computer networking).

That said, I'm also sick of the whole street racing/Stupid Street/Fast and the Furious scene. It's not cool, never has been, and never will be.

I'll wade into this, with my 12k number proudly waving over my head......

I originally started thinking about retiring my MY91 Probe LX (V-6) a little over three years ago. At the time, I was seriously considering a Civic Si, but a friend of mine (Burnsrules) turned me on to the RS. Started doing the research, lurking here, and lurking on the Scooby newsgroup on Usenet.

However, budgetary limitations ended up keeping me out of the market until this past fall. When I finally had the finances lined up, I was mostly sold on the RS but still hadn't driven one. I had driven an Si about 9 months previous, but a call to the Honda dealer ruled that out...they had been dropped and all available stock in a 10-state area was gone. So, the RS was looking better.

I had looked at one at the Chicago Auto Show earlier last year, and was impressed (imprezzed?) by what I saw. However, the one local dealer (Nielsen's in Gary, IN) never had one on the lot for me to drive. They were consistenly willing to order one for me, but I wasn't going to lay down that kind of money without at least taking a test drive....

I found Lynwood Motors over in Lynwood, IL and Tom took me on a real test drive....through a twisty onramp, up a highway, and through some local roads. I was hooked. I had heard rumblings about the WRX, but it was $4k over my budget, so it was never really an option. I ordered my MY01 RS Sedan and Daphne came to live with us last December (the car-naming thing is a tradition with my wife....)

I'm about a month away from 39. I understand the mechanicals, and have no use for accessories that don't add to the performance of the car. Is it functional? No? Then go away. I had some guy who was devloping hi-intensity LED's to light your brake calipers and asked if he could rig up my car. I politely declined. I just don't get that whole thing........

I've really been around here for about 2-1/2 years, just never got around to registering until this month.

I've also noticed a disturbing trend on the newsgroup....before the WRX came out, most of the postings were about RS's and Foresters. After the WRX came out, I'm lucky to see 2 RS posts a week. 80 percent WRX, 10 percent Forester/Outback, with the occasional SVX or older post. It's like everybody who owned an RS just dumped them and ran out and bought WRX's...

I'm perfectly happy with my RS. I plan on doing a few mods when the budget allows, but for now, she's my daily driver and I've put 21k on in the first year.

So, even though I have a high number, I'm "old school". I'm just a late joiner.

Paul

While their has been an undeniable attitude change on the board, due to the massive influx of new members. There have also be a lot of really knowledgable newbies too. Some of the noe X Honda guys, X V8 owners and so forth have a lot of technical know how and experience from which we can all benifit. On the flip side the influx has ALSO brought some really immature, know it all'ish and rude people too. We have to balance what we see, if all we see and think about is the negative that will be your view on the board, if all you do is laugh, learn what you can and enjoy it for what it is, its still the same I-club we all know and love.
I have met a LOT of newbies with WRX's that are really into Subaru ownership, and the society of us scoob nuts. I have made many friends from this club and through random meetings of other Subaru owners.
It will calm down eventually. will it ever "go back to the way it was"...NO. I dont want it to either. The board has grown and regressed at the same time. It can only improve.
I lurked for a looooooooooooooong time as a VW owner before I finally found my 99 RS in late 99. Even then I lurked until I got a job that allowed be to surf all day  then I joined and have been here every day since.

Long live the GC8....

First check the member # (10433) and the title (Scoobie Newbie). Now check my car (2002 WRX Sedan). That being said, I would like to appologize for "my kind" to all of you "old schoolers".

I have been cruizing i-club for around a year and a half now (my Favorites shortcut still says www.impreza-rs.com) and only registered in May, I think.

I also have seen the changes in the i-club in the short time I have been here. I also have been the victim of flames to my posts. I also have noticed the challenges and general "snobbyness" of WRX owners.

But I have also gotten great advise and info from newbies and WRX people. I have also gotten more than a few thumbs up from WRX people.

I have also experienced the same hostility many have mentioned not from WRX people, but from some "old schoolers".

Don't hate me because of the car I drive or the fact that I'm still a newbie. Don't generalize and put me into a group.

I LOVE EVERYONE!!!   I love my SUBARU!!!

Oh, and by the way, speaking of car jealousy, I am totally jealous of you RS coupe owners. I point out every one I see to my g/f. I think she is getting sick of it.

The only thing that upsets me is the domination of WRX. MOST Vendors changed their stock to WRX stuff, which is understandable, because that's where the money is.

So what we need now is a strictly, well-known, friendly 2001 MY and below vendor, that won't leave us. :)

I used to spend hours on I-club everyday, now once
a week for 10 min( in other words the i-club is starting to suk). Also how are some people with member # 7000+ have specialist status while I posted like crazy everyday when it was just Impreza-Rs.com before it changed to i-club:confused: Don't matter cause my modded 98RS-N is just waiting for a wrx to pull up at a red light
Ohh yea one more thing, seperating 'new school' and 'old school' was a very good idea, thanx Nik.;)

I admit im a post whore
.....You know i bought my car in december of 99 and well i wasnt really interested in joining a club until my warranty ran out.....then for two months after it ran it i had a hard time finding the club....but finally did. Believe me I have noticed the tension between old style impreza owners and the WRX's, when i read the threads if it posted by a WRX owner i usally dont read further cause......alot of info doesnt apply to my car. I look at it this way though......ya the WRX is a great car with alot of power........but it still looks like a neon:p ;) :)

What concerns me the most, (and I don't want to offend any WRX owners) is the fact that this board is becoming more for the WRX and less for the RS and other Subaru cars. When I joined all was nice everyone was pleasant, now I think we (as in RS owners) feel what was once a place of common ground is becoming ground we must now share. Since the release of the WRX I haven't been as active in the forums like many others mainly because it seems like every post is WRX related. I must say that temptation to trade my RS for a WRX has crossed my mind, but the way I see it the oldschool RS is the one who paved the way so that all the WRX owners could be just that. I plan to keep my RS for as long as she will run just because of the unique styling and most definately because of the limited numbers made. What I look forward to now is the possible release of the STI so then I'll have oldschool and newschool in my driveway, not to mention I'll be one up on the WRX owners.

okay under #5000......usually I'll post mostly helpful info. The thing that gets me is all the new agers post with out searching or even checking the rest of the board.....I dont know how many times there have been multiple posts about the same subject at the same time. granted there are some old schoolers out there that do the same, but a lot of them are newagers. I think this is what contribute to the change in attitude of i-club. I usually get tired of anwering the same post over and over, however I answer it and suggest a search, because that seems to end the thread pretty fast

subart,

Don't feel to bad I've be around for a longtime and I'm still a newbie. It also used to take far fewer posts to become a specialist. For some reason I think it was like 60 posts. I remember when they changed it. It was also when the term post whore started showing up.

Sigh, my lowly impreza never gets any respect. If you ever want to be ignored, show up with a 2.2 normally aspirated Impreza with stock bodywork. Oh well, I've got a low number and I'm a nice member.
Ditto here, Jesse.

This is an IMPREZA owners club (well, all Subies are welcome, but certainly all Imprezas!) that has become dominated by 2002 WRX issues due to the sheer number of WRX owners. Whaddaya gonna do?

Maybe we can get a forum set up for "subie newbies" with member numbers below 2500, say? Interested Marquis, GZoomer? Nahhh, wouldn't work, we're all listeners who don't post much! :p :D

If you don't want more members...CLOSE the regestration. but this is froma "newager" and I guess I am not wanted because I wasn't good enough to find out about this place in the begining.

I couldn't have said it any better. Just wanted to quote someone that embodied my feelings the second I read the few first posts.

O.K., I'm a WRX owner but we also have a 95 Legacy and have had 3 other subies. I hope I am not one of the WRX snobs. Hey, if it wasn't for those of us who remained loyal to Subaru and particularly to RS owners who pushed for the WRX it never would have been released in the U.S. So we thank you and respect you. :D

I don't get it.. your still a newbie.. i never really cared for the status... because it wasn't needed... people were so knowledgable that with whatever status you had people would know how much you knew just by your posts... so i shut up... but seems there is a lot of people and need a lot of help.... so i just try to help... actually it would be cool to have an old timer title... hehehe

I'm only 19, so I couldn't afford my car until now, so I didn't post. I've got mixed feelings about the WRX owners. I bought my car used from a very nice guy who bought a WRX.

I want to see some pics of impreza-rs.com ... I remember it, but I can't remember the color scheme or the font or graphics. It used to get updated more often than the current page, I think...

I remember seeing the original SCC project impreza, the blue 2.5RX, in person at the L.A. auto show.

I remember being so stoked about the Minnam stage 2 turbo... (coming soon), and all the people waiting for their JC turbo kits.

I remember when people would mod their front lenses, removing the orange reflector, because clear corners were like $100.

I remember wishing that Gran Turismo had a 2.5RS in it, so that I could add turbo to the bigger engine.

OK goodnight all...
-scott-

BTW, the search function isn't always super-accurate, with all the extra crap that people post now-a-days. Try searching for something, and you've gotta wade through about 10-15 topics that aren't what you're looking for. Lots of times I get a 'exceeded 30 second timeout' message. A better FAQ would help.

Of course, seeing much of that would mean you and the 62 other members with lower numbers would have to be the ultimate post-whores nowadays. :D

This kind of dialog every once in a while can be a helpful thing for the virtual community. Regarding what the WRX means to the Subaru family overall, hopefully the rising tide will lift all boats. Concerning people who consistently make rude or otherwise inappropriate postings, hopefully the consistently helpful postings that most of us try to make, will keep those "course corrections" happening. I for one certainly appreciate and enjoy the i-club and this forum and the helpful people. Cheers, GoodFinder :)

There seem to be more WRX owners on the board than RS owners. There seem to be more RS owners on the board than L owners. (or TS, or OBS, etc)

So is the RS to the WRX as the L is to the RS?

In other words, I don't see that many L owners posting here. Are they the "real imprezas"? ;)

p.s. I drove my 94 impreza L wagon for 4 years before moving on.:)

I love this club. I'll admit I was late in the i-club(impreza-rs) scene, but before driving my current car, I drove the almighty '85 GL wagon, which could barely do 80mph, but had the cool 4hi and lo and 2wd shifter. The only thing I don't like about the club is the elitist attitude some old timers have to us newer members, I know you guys are cooler than me for joining earlier, but you don't have to rub it in so often;)

Yeah I agree with Nick^^^^:) I have only been on the board for about 6 months and I can really see a big change in the post's and just the general feel of everything. I really use to enjoy reading posts but now there is hardly anything worth while reading on the board. There are a lot of cool people on the board, but at the same time there are a lot of people that are just on here to make their point and dont want to listen to anybody else's oppinion. The moderators are all cool and I think that they are not being unfair when they delete a post. I dont understand why people get so upset about one little post. They know that what is being said on that thread is totally useless info if it has been deleted! I also am getting the sense that with the wrx coming to the U.S a different kind of people are looking at buying. Kinda seems like almost more stuck up people are buying the newer subaru's? I am NOT saying that all people that own a wrx are like that. I know a bunch of people that have wrx's that are really cool people. Just some people are rude. These are just my thoughts and this is just my opinion. Please dont flame me for saying that.;)

what disusts me more than anything is how neglegent alot of WRX owners are. They don't even realize that the old 2.5rs is what the orginal WRX looks like. And the fact that the WRX isn't even the best Impreza, which all the cocky SOBs will learn when we get the STi. Anyone who knows Subaru will know that the 2.5 engine is highly tunable, and is great under boost (can't say the tranny is all that great though). So I'll just keep doing to WRX drivers who talk crap what I've always done since I got my turbo kit, WASTE EM.....

Jeremy! You're just setting him up to get flamed! Not nice.;)

Yes, the board has changed. I think the big influx of new members created a huge amount of "newbie" posts, like "What is the best turbo kit?" and "9 psi = how much HP?". People have gotten sick of seeing those posts, and started to just say "Do a search!" I am guilty of it, too, and it makes the original poster defensive (understandably, IMO). So, I have tried to make a concerted effort to answer the question and then recommend they do a search to get more complete information. I think everyone adopting this attitude would do A LOT to reduce some of the conflict on this board. Furthermore, I feel that it is up to us, the Old-School members of this board, to initiate it. My $.02.

Check out my username, I didn't own a Subaru until 6 months ago! No one flamed me for it, or called me a poser or a wannabe. Bring back the love guys!

One thing I hate about a couple of WRX owners (and I ran into this alot at NOPI) was they think that since the 2.5 didn't come turbo, it must now BE turbo, so they felt they could come up and talk trash to me the first night then I beat the crap out of em and they didn't come back. Another thing thats annoying as hell is so many people asking if my car is a WRX itself. I know other 2.5 owners especially the ones with turbos know how annoying this is.

i actully love this board,i have a 97 type R also, but after years of being on honda boards this board is so much nicer, the people are more helpful and supportive here.its just nice togo to a board where everyone doesnt have a chip on their shoulds or look down on you because they got more JDM or mugen parts on their car,so trust me the attitude on this board in my opinionis 100% times better than what im used and i see on other boards.im mean you guys(subaru owners) even wave to eash other on the roads, i havent seen that since i was in the corvettes with my dad. dont get me wrong i get waves all the time when im in my type R i just wish when they waved they would use all five fingers.
