View Full Version : Which 2.2l block for J/Y build?
iluvdrt 01-14-2007, 07:40 PM I see a lot of people using the 2.2l block for builds. It that the closed deck 2.2l that came in the early boosted Legacy SS's or is it just a run of the mill 2.2l that comes in any other subaru.
What I am planning:
2.5L NA heads
WRX OR EJ22 block
stock EJ25 intake
WRX TD04
WRX injectors
WRX fuel pump
WRX TMIC
STi head gaskets
S-AFC
MBAC
FPR
WRX cross member
ebay uppipe
custom 2 3/4 exhaust
I figure if I do this, I can use the stock harness and ECM in my 2.5 GT and still produce 280-300 HP enough to have fun for a while (after tuning).
BTW its a wagon ;)

iluvdrt 01-14-2007, 07:55 PM EJ22T out of the 91-94 leg turbo.
Arent those hard to come by, I have only seen 1 ever.
Could a EJ20 from a WRX work?
speed_freak27 01-14-2007, 11:46 PM Yeah they are very hard to come by and yes an ej20 will work fine. Pm sent

Sweet, thanks a lot for the help, thats what I needed to know.
I am not trying to build a monster....yet, just something to somewhat keep up with my buddies EVO.
Imprezav 01-17-2007, 11:15 PM Great info.
For those running the 2.2T which headers would one go with?
I am doing some reasearch and would like to know if any headers off of the WRX or STI would fit.
Greddy...Perrin...Vibrant ?
Thanks
tonzo 01-21-2007, 06:55 AM There's no difference between the headers you'd use on an ej20, ej22t or ej257. The only difference is displacement. Headers for each will fit each. keep in mind that our blocks are like legos. they all fit the same no matter which block/head combination you use.
reddevil 01-21-2007, 02:11 PM The 90-94 2.2 NA block is plenty strong too though, just run the turbo pistons....

I would use the header that's made to work with your car specifically your crossmember. I'm using the stock one it doesn't cost anymore money and it will provide better spool but a little less top end power.
iownu86 02-04-2007, 01:04 PM is it possible to use any head with any block
excuse me for sounding stupid . like other noobs im just trying to find possible motor builds for my subie. its a 95 imp lx awd
tonzo 02-04-2007, 02:23 PM yep, you got it right. all ej heads will bolt on to all ej blocks. But of course when going with a hybrid motor there are many things to consider, such as compression ratio created by the head, block, stroke and piston combination.
iownu86 02-04-2007, 10:36 PM can u help ,e with some worthy combinations i have a ej22e to start with and would like to get to 200 to 225 hp na if possible looking for something thatcan stand up to scca soloing
FuJi K 02-04-2007, 11:50 PM Oh man...if I WANTED to do buildups....haha there are a handful of Legacies w/ EJ22's that I can pick/pull and rebuild to make your 300whp daily driven blocks. If I wanted, I would have just done that. Lucky I was able to get myself 2 EJ22Ts from the local UPULLRPARTS here in MN; 93 and a 91 w/ oil cooler.
The '91 is in my '99 L Wagon right now and I'm waiting on the wiring from GT. I'll have the wires be modded a little incase I wanna go with the Apexi PowerFC later down the road.
The setup I have right now in my car with the '91 EJ22T is just headerback w/ TD04L & TMIC and will run at 12psi until later I'll push 16psi w/ TurboXS FCD. This is good for 13's in the 1320.
But ya, I could grab all those EJ22E's and rebuild them if I had $$ laying around for a small project. Slap on a big 16G turbo and have at it all day with modded STi injectors and Apexi Power FC. Just need to add a MAP sensor...boost controler etc....
iownu86 02-05-2007, 06:51 PM so how much money would it take to build a ej22e
FuJi K 02-05-2007, 09:51 PM so how much money would it take to build a ej22e
To build the shortblock:
Approx $500 for rod/crank bearings
$400-$700 for forged rods
$400-$700 for forged pistons
gaskets/o-rings/seals (gasket kit; $250?)
Then upgrade oil pump and water pump
It'll be about as much as a NEW EJ257, but then you have the internals you WANT and FORGED pistons w/ coated bearings. This would be almost bullet proof. If you just wanted some 300whp, no need for rod upgrade really, just put in new bearings and keep the factory rods.
iownu86 02-05-2007, 10:47 PM thank u for all youre help. im am trying to decide what to do with my tax return this year and its either this or save some money and buy the pro ecm chip and headers
sama lama 02-05-2007, 11:59 PM Should he use 2.2 t head gasket's not 2.5 sti because of the cylinder bore.
reddevil 02-06-2007, 12:18 AM My current "junkyard build"
199? Engine case $50
1993 EJ22T Crank, Rods and Pistons $free
New main and rod bearings $110?
2.0 DOHC twin turbo heads and intake manifold $200
550 STI Yellow Side Feed Injectors $125
3-1 Vortecg RRFPR $125
M62 Eaton Supercharger $235
GT30 equivilent turbo $202
SS Autochrome FMIC $235
Greddy "Trust" MBC $borrowed
9" Crank Pulley $335
2.5 downpipe and exhaust $50
6 puck disc $99
Forester flywheel $50
RS pressure plate $127
Perfect Power 6 $300
Misc $500
total $2743.00
Plus GOBS of time....
Right now making about 230-240 whp at 16psi... Gonna go for 300 plus this weekend on high octane at 20 or more psi....
FuJi K 02-06-2007, 04:08 AM Should he use 2.2 t head gasket's not 2.5 sti because of the cylinder bore.
He can use the EJ22T HG, If it's for HIGH BOOST then probabaly a cometic HG would be better with the same thickness. People have run with a 2.5L HG, but then if you worry about that little gap, then just run Cometic w/ thickness you want.
Be sure to run APR head studs because the metal HG don't really compress down like the stock..... that's what I've heard.....
BUT THEN the '99+ 2.2L/2.5L run a SINGLE LAYER HG and they are torqued the same like the muti-layer HG DOHC 2.5L.
up to you I guess....
iluvdrt 02-06-2007, 04:53 PM I have gotten such a mixed review on which HG to get I am starting to think it doesnt really matter. Some are slightly thicker than others but I really dont think it makes a differance unless your trying to squeeze every bit of power out of the engine. I have heard a lot about the cometic gaskets though so maybe they would be the best place to ask.
Matt Monson 02-06-2007, 05:29 PM yep, you got it right. all ej heads will bolt on to all ej blocks. But of course when going with a hybrid motor there are many things to consider, such as compression ratio created by the head, block, stroke and piston combination.
There's one thing missing from this comment: bore differential. One CANNOT bolt 2.5l heads to an Ej18 or Ej20 block. You won't get a head gasket seal. You can put Ej20 heads on an Ej25 block, but not the other way around. You can put 2.5l heads on an Ej22 though.
If this were my build, I would just grab an open deck Ej22E NA engine and bolt up the Ej25 heads. It's around 8.6:1 if you use the .152cm thick early gaskets. The turbo Ej22 pistons aren't any stronger, and they make for a really low compression ratio...
