View Full Version : Tires
mike91401 01-24-2007, 08:02 PM Okay... So I've needed new tires for a while, but other upgrades seemed to drain my account before getting to buying tires... Now running stage 2 seems to have given my need for tires a bit higher priority... I've always been the guy to buy the big name brand, don't trust the smaller tire companies, etc.... BUT at this point I really don't want to have to sell my children to buy tires.
I've been looking at the Falken RT-615 and FK-451... I know a bunch of you have Falken's... What's your thoughts on it? Other tires worth putting on an 05 STI??? Originally I was planning on getting the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3, but I just don't want to spend that much.
So chime in and let me know you thoughts on good tires.... As I don't really leave the valley, I could care less about all season... I want summer tires.
Really at this point I just need convincing that Falken's or something else is going to be as good and reliable as Goodyear or bridgestone...
Also considering wheels.... but can't decide if I get wheels do I want to stick with 17's or go to 18's... So why would i want to go to 18's vs 17's?
treefrogaz 01-24-2007, 08:06 PM Falken 615's FTW :D
WebMasterP 01-24-2007, 08:35 PM I'm running some Potenza RE-01R's on really light weight 18x8" wheels. Those thing take corners at AMAZING speeds / G's. Also, they're very quiet (for a high performance tire). It's almost the best of both worlds.
(Yes, I'm from NWIC, but hey, I'm in Tempe right now, so I can chime in, right? :))

Falken RT-615 is a good tire, a lot track ppl use it. Good bang for the buck
18's look nicer, possibly wider, usually heavier, cost more, but I still wanna get me some Advan RS 18x9.5
17's usually consider more track friendly depends on your setup, cheaper tires..etc
gregr01 01-24-2007, 08:38 PM Toyo RA-1 in 255/40/17. Not the cheapest, but they make a great street tire for AZ. Their R-comp traction has saved me more than once with super-short braking distance.
Don't know about treadlife yet, but I have 3k on them so far and looks like I'll get 10k+.

But if I sell the kids, I'm pretty sure I'm going to have a ton of legal fees as the wife files for divorce... So overall I don't think I'd make any money.

My02'OwnsMe 01-25-2007, 04:52 PM Currently I have a set of FK-452s and have been really surprised with how grippy they have been. I have owned two sets of the RT-215 in the past, and absolutely loved their amazing grip, but was not a fan of amazingly short tread life. I bought the 452 this time around rather than the 615 because of the higher treadwear rating expecting to get more life and less grip. So far, I think they as good as the RT-215 for daily driving and abusing mountain roads, and definitely quieter and better in the rain. I can't really testify for their longevity yet, but I would expect to have signifigantly longer tread life.
If you don't mind spending a little more and are going to be doing more daily driving than track acrobatics, I would probably reccomend the FK-452.
Hope this helps.
Valhakar 01-25-2007, 05:32 PM I run Toyo Proxies.
Street, Toyo Proxy 4 in 225/50-16 and 225/45-17 * I run one set in the dirt*
Track, Toyo Proxy RA1 shaved in 235/40-17 on 5Zigen 17x8.5 wheels.
I have looked at the 615s, they look really great in the dry, but I am a weat weather traction freak. One word, Monsoons. On top of that Proxy 4s do fairly well in the snow for runs up to the mountains.
Goodyear Eagle GS-D3s are pricey but I got 15+ hours of track time, real track time not the 5 minutes a day for AutoX, and 15K miles out of them. The only reason I didnt get another 10K out of them, the corners were blistered from the craptastic track at FIR. :(
