hey i drive a 1998 impreza L that has an aftermarket turbo. i am running greddys emanage and i havent figured out tuning timing. i was hopping that someone could help me out and tell me what i am looking for when im tuning timing. i havent played around with it at all because i dont want to mess anything up, i know how to tune other things with emanage and if anyone has any info that would be great!

Do you have any knock monitoring or a wideband? Really, properly adjusting timing would be impossible without these tools. Are you using the GReddy pressure sensor? If not, go buy one now. Your E-Manage is a piece of garbage without it.

Like turboL has already mentioned, typically, people start off with 1 degree of timing per pound of boost. When I had it dyno tuned, I found that 1 degree per psi is WAAAAYYY more than enough. It turned out to be more like 1 degree per 2 psi.

Assuming you are using the pressure sensor and you have kPa down the left side of the map and RPM across the top, you will need to convert kPa (relative pressure) to psi. You might also need to change the scale of the values on the left side to reflect your boost range. I did mine in multiples of 7kPa for a maximum of 70 kPa or 10 psi.

You could also throw in some -20 degrees retard for any cell that the kPa is 2 psi or so higher than what you would ever want to run. So let's say you're on a stock block with a TD04 running a max of 8 psi or 56 kPa. Every cell 70kPa or higher, put in 20 degrees retard so that when your wastegate hose pops off, your pistons don't blow your wheels off into next year.

Your map should look something like this:

haha. OK, i lied in order not to be flamed and for the safety of this guys engine.

I ran -10 degrees progressively starting from -2 when i was running 15psi.

across the rpms range it looked like

-2,-2,-3,-3,-4,-5,-6,-7,-8-9,-10,-10,-10,-10,-10

i hit -10degrees around 4500rpm.

What on earth would warrant adjusting your timing across the RPM range in such a wide spectrum like that? What was the manifold pressure? -2 degrees at 500 rpm? I'm so confused right now. 10 degrees timing retard in the E-Manage is way too much for just about anything since the ECU is already working the timing. I think you seriously need to reconfigure your ignition map! :eek:

EDIT: Maybe I misread... and I'm beginning to think I might have.... :lol:

yeah you did. -2 isnt at 500rpms lol.

its when i first start getting boost. that was just an exagerated example.

I would probably do more than that since my 98 RS runs as much as 48 degrees of timing at full throttle. That is way too much for any ammount of boost.

its different for everyone. There is no set guide for how much timing to pull. I just do it and if it knocks I pull more. That is all while running a steady afr.

Okay, because you said "across the RPM range".

Across the RPM range at 15 psi (your example) with 10 degrees of timing retard should look something like this, no?

103 kPa (10 psi) | -10 -10 -10 -10 -10 -10 -10 -11 -11 -11 -11 -11 -12

no my max retard was 10 degrees. I bumped it up the 12-13 eventually. ill try and find my map.
