View Full Version : Drivers side High Beam out

My drivers side high beam is out in my 04 Sti. I replaced the bulb, switched sides so I know the bulb is good. So I got out the test light and I get +12 swithing with the High beam switch. I get NO ground though, I checked the pin in the conector and all the way to where the wires go into the main harness. Has anyone had this happen?

From the FSM it looks like it could be the HID relay, but my HID's work fine. The schematic is a little wierd as the ground is not shared from side to side.

Any sugestions? I am going to try a known good HID relay and see if that works.

Have you tried tracing the ground wire to see if it's a loose connection? I'd check that first.

It was 3*F when I woke up this morning. The ground goes into the main harness and I really don't want to have to remove all the tape and loom just yet. I checked all the other ground wires that go into the harness I could find and they checked out OK.

It's a common positive, switched ground system. You should see 12V on one side of the connector (with the bulb unplugged) when the headlights are turned on, and ground on the other side when the high beams are activated.

I know and I am not getting a ground on that side.
The grounds are switched seperately. I went and took a look and there is no relay in the spot that wires 34,35,36,and 38 terminate in the relay box. I need the 5 pin relay. I don't know why there is no relay there now, but it makes sense that without that relay the left side high beam won't work. Maybe to test it I will just jumper wires 35 and 38 see if that fixxes the light. If it does then I know I need thaat relay.

I know there is some weirdness in the highbeam wiring. You can pull the flash to pass partially and get one side to light up without the relay click. Pull further and the relay clicks and brings on the remaining side.

I fixxed it today.
Some how the relay was in the wrong slot. I looked at another 04 Sti and verified it before I swapped it. I have no idea how it got swapped, I am just glad it is fixxed

BTW looking at the relay box the top slot is the "HID Relay" as it is called in th FSM and it is a 5 pin relay. The only thing grounded through it is the drivers side high beam.
