View Full Version : Aiming the HIDs TylerDurdin 01-26-2007, 11:53 AM hi i just recently had some H1 HIDs intalled in my car. The problem is that the driver's side is aimed too high while the passenger side is aimed too low. Is there anyway to adjust this problem? AlxSti 01-26-2007, 12:01 PM yeah.. on the 04 sti there is a little white knoby thing that you can turn to raise and lower the low beams.. just look behind the headlight right below where the hid plugs into the housing.. you should see it. if i remember correctly i used an 8mm wrench to get at it. good luck and remeber to not set it so high since you have the adjuster knob in the cabin. chrisarella 01-26-2007, 12:05 PM If you retrofitted h1 HID bulbs in a stock halogen housing you can adjust the beam from under the hood. I haven't looked but your owners manual should cover this. But I've got to say putting High Intensity Discharge bulbs in a Halogen lamp is less than ideal. You're going to get a poor beam patter and blind oncoming traffic regardless. HID lamps have special projectors do control the arc and levelling motors to keep the light level so not to blind people. There is an FAQ here about the issues if you're interested. chrisarella 01-26-2007, 12:09 PM Ah, AlxSti beat me to the punch on the adjustmet suggestion. But my statement about using HID bulbs in halogen housings is still relevant. Master2192 01-26-2007, 12:16 PM Ah, AlxSti beat me to the punch on the adjustmet suggestion. But my statement about using HID bulbs in halogen housings is still relevant. Except for the fact that he has a 04 STI which has HID housings chrisarella 01-26-2007, 12:20 PM I thought HID bulbs were D series (D2R, D2S, etc.) and H1s were halogens? No? Isn't that what the "H" stands for... Halogen? TylerDurdin 01-26-2007, 12:24 PM hi thanks for all the feedback...but i forgot to make myself clear, my bad! i own a canadian version so it came without HIDs and i just installed them because i had a previous set before that just recently burnt out. Therefore i have no leveller in the car to adjust them. Any ideas? AlxSti 01-26-2007, 01:20 PM check for the knob anyway? and chris is right about having a crappy light pattern when installing hids into a non-projector housing. i installed a kit into my moms 07 solara which had projectors and they came out pretty nice.. but HID projectors would be ideal. thats why, if you ever noticed, evos have that blueish cutoff.. our 04-05 stis dont have the projectors.. i think the 06s might. but yea.. ethier way.. just check for that knob anyway.. there should be something back there Lambu 01-26-2007, 01:30 PM there are two adjuster screws on the backside of the assy. one behind the highbeam for side to side adjustment and one at the bottom behind the lowbeam for up and down. u need an 8mm wrench and just follow the reg aiming procedure, but aim them a little down than for halogen. i have a similar kit in my car, and the beam pattern is not nearly as bad as some other cars i've seen. still has a lot of glare though. hope this helps SSFWRX 02-04-2007, 03:30 AM I thought HID bulbs were D series (D2R, D2S, etc.) and H1s were halogens? No? Isn't that what the "H" stands for... Halogen? D2R and D2S are OEM HID setups. Basically any HID kit you buy in the aftermarket is a rebased HID bulb on an H series base. Imagine a halogen base with a HID bulb epoxied or fixed in place of the halogen unit. Handsdown 02-04-2007, 03:47 AM actually more and more of the cheap asian retrofit kit companies are making D2* versions now... and they're making the ballasts look just like OEM ones so you can't tell the difference. but for the most part, a kit will be a rebased bulb, you're right. just letting people know that the cheap and unreliable aftermarket manufactures are doing D2S now so be weary. chrisarella 02-04-2007, 12:07 PM Yeah, my point was that HIDs were developed as D series, and everything has been skewed by the aftermarket. |
