im going to get a 07 wrx which is a 2.5l of course but one thing that came to my mind when shopping for parts. im going to do a stage 3 with a ewg but planing to upgrade the turbo after i have enough money to get ppg gears. the question is can i get a TiAL 44mm External Wastegate (or bigger) so when i upgrade the turbo i don't have to buy another ewg or do i have to get the right sizes for my turbo.
thanxs
p.s. it may take me 7 month to upgrade the turbo if that helps.

umm you wont need anymore than a 44mm wastegate....what turbo do you even plan on running? that will determine wastegate size.....

stage 3 from who.....stages usually dont mean crap to people....you need to be more specific....cobb stage 3, subaru stage 3, etc... everyone has different packages which they call "stages" many are completely different power wise...

we cant really determine anything unless we get a range of what you plan on getting....you do realize from what i gather here your looking to spend $10k in motor and tranny alone....ppg gears are expensive....turbo inlet, intake, fuel pump, intercooler, injectors, fuel rails, engine management, turbo kit, ewg upipe, ewg, tuning, boost controller/boost solenoid, exhaust, plugs, rotated turbo install kit ( if you go rotated which if your going to spend and assload of money you might as well get )

hope you saved up

i forgot stages don't mean nothing but i meant stage 3 cobb with vf39 in sti intercooler. i have about 6k save up and later on im not sure what turbo to get but a 18g or bigger. my friend is a mechanic and we are going to install all the parts ourself. so no labor price just tuning price.
thanxs

I would go with the TiAl 44mm over the 38mm just because it uses a v-band connection and won't blow out gaskets and leak like some 38's do.

How much boost do you plan on running? And there's nothing wrong with a 38mm, just get some good SS gaskets. The supplied gaskets are crap.

There is something to do with boost taper, and the size of the wastegates. I don't know what it is....but i would like to learn more.

It has something to do with exhaust pressure and the size of the diaphram/surface area in the wastegate...

thanxs Unabomber for the good information. so what that link tells me is that i should go with a 44mm if im planing to run around 20 psi or would that be called high boost?

The thread tells you the theory, but also tells you to ask your tuner. Sizing is important and best left between you and your tuner, not some idiot like me over the internet. Also read Jorge's opinion that the 44 is easier to work in terms of wrenching on your car, as that may play a role as well.

44mm is plenty big enough. I have a 38mm now, works great with my vf-39 and even with SZ49's/55's. Copper gasket maker works great, don't even run the paper gasket, slap some copper goo on there and bolt it up!No leaks. Oh yeah, switch to stainless bolts and double nut w/lock washer them baby's if you use a 38mm.

The problem is once you have the 38mm on there and you realize how much of a PITA it is to be pulling it off and putting it back on because of the included gaskets that you realize the advantage of a 44mm and its v-band, set it and forget it-ness. But yes, the 38mm are fine for most people running high boost, especially on bigger turbines.

Just from personal experience, I've spoken with many people from different communities who all have had problem getting good seals on their 38mm's using other things in place of the supplied gaskets.

just food for thought.
on the other hand, the 38mm is sooooooo much easier to find room for as opposed to a 44mm, assuming your doing the fab yourself.

More than the size make sure you have the boost controller that your tuner is most adept at using.

My 38mm is plenty big enough for my 20G but it's a PITA to find the sweet spot using my DTEC. IMHO the sweet spot results in quick building boost and little to no overshoot.

Isn't there an EWG that is in between the 38mm and the 44mm that has a V-band?

Yes there is.
