View Full Version : Low Fuel light
Peaty 11-29-2001, 01:54 AM Wow, yesterday my low fuel light actually came on. I've had the car for what 2 years and never saw it come on before. I actually didn't really think there was one. It came on just as the needle hit the E mark. Other cars I've had a light would come on some short time before E. It took 12 gallons or so. I've never let the car get that low before is obviously why it came on. It sort of scared me having never seen that light before.
CosmoTheCat 11-29-2001, 02:34 AM I think it was my Legacy where the light would fade in and out for a while, warning that it was about to come on. Then it would come on solid. Then I would get gas. :)
My RS the light comes on when it gets close to the E, but never really is empty.
wolf8314 11-29-2001, 02:39 AM I ran out of gas before ....i know very very very embarrassing. I went to a job interview and in my rush to get there i forgot my wallet.....so on the way home i had no money no credit card nothing ....sure enough i ran out of gas .....very embarrassing....you have about 20 odd miles from when the light comes on to when you run out of gas.......keep that in mind.

Seeing StaRS 11-29-2001, 03:37 AM The gas guage in my Legacy is more or less screwed up. I'd say about 2/3rds off. Therefore I know that when that fuel light comes on, I should be thinking about tanking up.
Peaty 11-29-2001, 08:15 AM I was low on gas and knew I needed it but had to get the kids at daycare before they closed so I chanced it. I think our tanks hold 15.6 pr 15.9 US gallons but there are 2 or 3 dead gallons that you can't get because there is a lower spot to let some crud accumulate. Not positive though. With our 97 Legacy we've never seen the light come on. I guess we never let it get that low I guess. If the fuel pump is in the tank like I think it is it's probably not a good idea to let it run too low. The gas cools the pump.

I see that light regularly... typically thursdays on the way home. I've once filled up 14.8 gallons. I'd trush the light for 30+ miles in my car, maybe 50 at highway crusing. Never run out yet...
AO
I thought my light was just burnt out or something. I let it get real low the other day and it never came on. Cars I had before came on early.

Hell yeah a 14.8 gallon fill up! Now that is something I can admire. I used to think a 13 gallon fill-up was bad but that is living life on the edge. You probably had like three cups of gas in your tank :D
Iowannaski 11-29-2001, 12:06 PM Wow, most of you guys are anal about gas, huh? I'm w/ AO. I usually do about 14-14.5 at a fill up. I can reliably get to Brighton and back after the light come on. That's 70 miles of city and highway. If you're not seeing your gas light, your only using 75% of that nice big tank you paid for!
subachad 11-29-2001, 12:10 PM U guys all suck... The most I have ever been able to put in is 11 Gallons. That was from Portland to Pendalton on the way to Montana. I was hella nervous, not too many gas stations in that area. I'm paranoid of running out of gas too. As for the gas light... still haven't seen it, but then again, I usually keep the needle on the happy side of half.

Marc Sawaya 11-29-2001, 05:06 PM I was getting 14 gallons in pretty regularly. The manual says the gas light comes on at 1.3 gallons left, but I don't believe that. Sometimes I would start getting shuddery after 20 miles of city driving after the gas light came on. Also the gas light would trigger at unusual times. I think if you have like 1.2 gallons left and you parked, the light would come on when you started the car, but if you're just driving then it doesn't realize it until later.
Strange.
I've gone to the point of 14.x gallons with my RS a few times.
However, when I had my previous Impreza--'95 L AWD sedan--there was no low fuel light. I found that to be odd considering all three of my early '80s Subarus all had low fuel lights. How many years of the Impreza came without this feature?

noting your car type... it has a smaller tank, and much ;) smaller engine... they pretty much design the tank to last about 3xx miles of mixed driving, I typically get about 350 or so from a tank. My miles are pretty much highway miles (how else does one put 30,000 miles on a car in one year :().
subachad 11-30-2001, 04:29 PM Smaller engine maybe, but the 5psi makes it flow about the same CFM as a 2.5 motor.... As for distance I can travel, that all depends on the vacume gauge. While it's in it's happier times above 0, the mileage seems to be decreased for some reason

just razzin' ya...
As for the low fuel light. Just as I post braggin how I've goten a 14.8 fillup, well sunday eveing, during a trip to NH, my light comes on, I figure I've got another 30 + miles, as I'm rolling into town, hic-up... I get about 40 feet from the gas station, and it stalls out
I was able to coast to about 5 feet from the pump. People all looked at me as I hopped out and pushed the car the final feet. Total fillup. 14.8 before topping off. I topped it off just to say I had a 15 gallon fill-up. Next time, I'll fill-up before my trip.

COwannago 12-07-2001, 04:47 AM That low fuel light is definitly iffy. I've seen it come on and it only needed 11 gallons, other times was closer to 14. The most I'e ever had to put in at one time was 14.3. I was pretty nervous, coasting down hills and such.

do our older cars even HAVE a low fuel light? i've never seen mine. :D where is it?
plus my gauge is usually on E after 200 miles...
the most i've ever put in is about 11.x gallons...an hour of crusing at ~110 does wonders for your mileage. :D

8Complex 12-07-2001, 01:57 PM At least the MY00's hold 15.3 gallons and have a 2 or 2.3 gallon reserve after the fuel light comes on. I've run mine 50 miles after the light came on and still only put 14.7 gallons in the tank. *shrug*
cd3575 12-07-2001, 02:06 PM few weeks ago I made a run from the south burbs of chicago to the city and then home with the low fuel light on (stupid i know) As I rounded the corner to my drive I got a sputter when trying to give it lots of gas. That was bout 50+ miles with the low fuel light on. I took the gas can for the Lawn Tractor in the morning and dumped about 3 gallons in my tank so I could get to the gas station.
Anyone ever try the Seinfeld thing that Kramer did with the Saab where the dealer and Kramer drove as long as they could with the fuel ligh on?

 That's a classic one!

Yeah when Cosmo stops for snacks, and the dealer is eyeing the gas pumps. The dealer is about to put gas in and Cosmo gives him a pep talk to stop him from pumping.
DoinkMobb 12-07-2001, 03:42 PM RaceCarRiot - yeah I've never seen the low fuel light in my car either. I'm beginning to doubt the existence of the fabled low fuel light.
Right now my needle is well below E and I've got about 230 miles on the tank right now. I'm not sure if I filled the tank up completely last time I got gas so I'm getting kinda nervous about where the needle is. I think I'll get gas today. Man, I love living life on the edge like this.
RaceCarRiot 12-07-2001, 08:11 PM yep, mine runs down to E at 200 miles, and by 230, it's WELL below E. i usually take it to 250, and then fill it up...it usually takes 10~11 gallons to fill it all the way, so even at 250mi, you can figure you have about 2 to 3 gallons left. meaning my little car only gets about 24mpg...grr.
*must...stop...speeding...*
where is the light? it's down in that big long black bar of idiot lights, right?
doobie 12-07-2001, 10:04 PM I stick with forty miles once the light first comes on. The tank holds 16+ gallons I usually fill it with 13 to 14. Still plenty left if your cosmo.
I used to run all the way down till the light comes on when our gas prices were a little wee bit more stable. Now, I fill up anywhere between half full to almost empty (haven't seen the light that often). By my count, I'm getting a good 350mile if not more per tank (and US gas tends to run longer than Canadian gas)
yamarocket630 12-08-2001, 11:53 AM After owning several Ford and Chrysler vehicles, where the low fuel light means "you should probalby think about filling up sometime in the next week or two" I found out the hard way that a Subaru low fuel light means "hey dumbass, you're almost out of gas!" I sputtered and stumbled into the gas station, about 35 miles of highway driving after the light came on. I figure that was no more than 1.5 gallons left when the light first came on. In my old MY99 Dodge Dakota, I had about 6 gallons when the light came on.
motorob 12-13-2001, 02:17 AM If you doubt the existence of the low-fuel light in your car, put a can of gas in the car on your next trip and drive it out. You're not going to hurt your fuel pump doing that once. I do it with every new car (and motorcycle) I get so I have an idea how wrong the gauge (or reserve light in the case of bikes) is screwed up. My GT will go 50 miles on the highway before it quits. I just drive until the light comes on and then get gas.
alphabenson 03-05-2002, 06:12 PM Ive never ran out of gas but i fear that my gauge is incorrect,
when the gauge shows that its empty (or very close to the 'E')
and i fill it up it only takes roughly 7 gallons. Ive driven untill the neddle falls below the 'E' so my tripmeter reads about 300miles with i reset each time i fill er up. and then it only takes about 10.5
i havent seen a warning light anywhere on the console, is it the little picture of the gas pump that lights up on a '93 impreza?
does anyone have any suggestions why my gas gauge might be messed up?
Ben
SubaruImpreza_power 05-09-2002, 12:38 PM Hey has anyone tryed that Pezoil spare gas whatever thing that was?
